Low-Frequency Vibrational Motions of Polystyrene in Carbon Tetrachloride: Comparison with Model Monomer and Dependence on Concentration and Molecular Weight.

In this study, the low-frequency vibrational dynamics of polystyrene (PS) in CCl4 was investigated by femtosecond Raman-induced Kerr effect … than the EBz/CCl4 in the low-frequency region below ca. 20 cm-1. This indicates that translational motions are suppressed in the PS/CCl4 compared to the EBz/CCl4. Moreover, the high-frequency motion at ca. 70 cm-1, mainly due to phenyl ring librations, occurs at higher frequency in PS (78 cm-1) than EBz (65 cm-1). In addition, the results of concentrati …

Histotripsy Ablations in a Porcine Liver Model: Feasibility of Respiratory Motion Compensation by Alteration of the Ablation Zone Prescription Shape.

BACKGROUND: Previous human-scale porcine liver model studies of histotripsy have resulted in ablation zones elongated in the cranial-caudal (CC) dimension due to uninterrupted respiratory motion during the ablation procedure. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compensate for elongation of hepatic histotripsy ablation zones in the cranial-caudal (CC) dimension caused by respiratory motion by prescribing ellipsoid-shaped ablations. METHODS: Six female swine underwent 12 hepatic histotripsy ablations using a prototype clinical histotripsy system under general anesthesia. Each animal recei…

Integration of high velocity test object motion into a channelized Hotelling observer for the assessment of x-ray angiography systems.

Assessment of x-ray angiography system performance is typically performed using stationary test objects with simple geometries such as a disk on a uniform background. However, these methods do not represent realistic imaging conditions in interventional cardiology as anatomy and devices are inherently non-stationary due to cardiac motion. In this work, a novel implementation of the channelized Hotelling observer (CHO) was used to assess the influence of motion blur on object detectability. A standard CHO model assumes imaging system stationarity whereby the detectability index [Formula: see te…

A Novel Multiparametric Score for the Detection and Grading of Prosthetic Mitral Valve Obstruction in Cases With Different Disc Motion Abnormalities.

Prosthetic mechanical valves are the elective choice in mitral valve (MV) replacement, because of their reliability and easiness of implantation. However, these prostheses can suffer from complications, the major one being prosthetic mitral valve thrombosis (PMVT). In these cases, transthoracic doppler echocardiogram (TDE) is the standard diagnostic workup for diagnosis of valve malfunction. The American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) indicates the possible TDE-derived indexes, which can help in identifying insurgence of MV replacement complications. Unfortunately, in some cases, it is not

Using Machine Learning and a Combination of Respiratory Flow, Laryngeal Motion, and Swallowing Sounds to Classify Safe and Unsafe Swallowing.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this research was to develop a swallowing assessment method to help prevent aspiration pneumonia. The method uses simple sensors to monitor swallowing function during an individual's daily life. METHODS: The key characteristics of our proposed method are as follows. First, we assess swallowing function by using respiratory flow, laryngeal motion, and swallowing sound signals recorded by simple sensors. Second, we classify whether the recorded signals correspond to healthy subjects or patients with dysphagia. Finally, we analyze the recorded signals using both a feature e…

A meta-analysis of reduced leaflet motion for surgical and transcatheter aortic valves: Relationship to cerebrovascular events and valve degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Reduced leaflet motion (RLM) of transcatheter aortic valves (TAV) is observed in up to 4% of cases with similar frequency in surgical valves, with an overall incidence that differs based on prosthesis type and size. This phenomenon likely represents subclinical leaflet thrombosis. Herein we sought to analyze the existing reported literature to assess whether or not RLM is associated with subsequent valve degeneration or cerebrovascular events. METHODS AND RESULTS: We searched PubMed, and EMBASE (2008-2017) to identify relevant studies. Studies with <1-year follow-up, studies not e…

Comparing time and motion methods to study personnel time in the context of a family planning supply chain intervention in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: A family planning (FP) supply chain intervention was introduced in Senegal in 2012 to reduce contraceptive stock-outs. Labour is the highest cost in low- and middle-income country supply chains. In this paper, we (1) understand time use of personnel working in the FP supply chain at health facilities in Senegal, (2) estimate the validity of self-administered timesheets (STs) relative to continuous observations (COs), and (3) describe the cost of data collection for each method. METHODS: We collected time use data for seven stockroom managers in six facilities using both ST and CO.
