DeepFHR: intelligent prediction of fetal Acidemia using fetal heart rate signals based on convolutional neural network.

BACKGROUND: Fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring is a screening tool used by obstetricians to evaluate the fetal state. Because of the complexity and non-linearity, a visual interpretation of FHR signals using common guidelines usually results in significant subjective inter-observer and intra-observer variability. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, computer aided diagnosis (CAD) systems based on advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology have recently been developed to assist obstetricians in making objective medical decisions. METHODS: In this work, we present an 8-layer deep convolutional neural ne

Objective prediction of pharyngeal swallow dysfunction in dysphagia through artificial neural network modeling.

BACKGROUND: Pharyngeal pressure-flow analysis (PFA) of high resolution impedance-manometry (HRIM) with calculation of the swallow risk index (SRI) can quantify swallow dysfunction predisposing to aspiration. We explored the potential use of artificial neural networks (ANN) to model the relationship between PFA swallow metrics and aspiration and to predict swallow dysfunction. METHODS: Two hundred consecutive dysphagia patients referred for videofluoroscopy and HRIM were assessed. Presence of aspiration was scored and PFA software derived 13 metrics and the SRI. An ANN was created and optimize

The effect of apparent latency on simulator sickness while using a see-through helmet-mounted display: reducing apparent latency with predictive compensation.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of head movement frequency and predictive compensation on (a) latency produced in a monocular see-through helmet-mounted display (HMD) test bed and (b) simulator sickness experienced by users wearing the HMD. BACKGROUND: There is conflicting research regarding latency as a significant factor in the onset of simulator sickness. Predictive compensation has been shown to mitigate the magnitude of latency, but little is known about the extent of its effect on simulator sickness. METHOD: A video camera recorded HMD and simulator imagery

Utility of multilayer perceptron neural network classifiers in the diagnosis of the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome from nocturnal oximetry.

The aim of this study is to assess the ability of multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural networks as an assistant tool in the diagnosis of the obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS). Non-linear features from nocturnal oxygen saturation (SaO(2)) recordings were used to discriminate between OSAS positive and negative patients. A total of 187 subjects suspected of suffering from OSAS (111 with a positive diagnosis of OSAS and 76 with a negative diagnosis of OSAS) took part in the study. The initial population was divided into training, validation and test sets for deriving and testing our neural ne

Modeling of the polluting emissions from a cement production plant by partial least-squares, principal component regression, and artificial neural networks.

A Portland cement process was taken into consideration and monitored for one month with respect to polluting emissions, fuel and raw material physical-chemical properties, and operative conditions. Soft models, based on linear (partial least-squares, PLS, and principal component regression, PCR) and nonlinear (artificial neural networks, ANNs) approaches, were employed to predict the polluting emissions. The predictive ability of the three regression methods was evaluated by means of the partition of the dataset by Kohonen self-associative maps into both a training and a test set. Then, a "lea

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of follicular fluids from large and small antral follicles.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to obtain 'biochemical fingerprints' for the constitution of follicular fluids from large and small antral luteinized follicles (n = 54 pairs). All samples gave reproducible characteristic biological infrared absorption spectra, with recognizable amide I protein vibrations and acyl vibrations from fatty acids. Discriminant function analysis of the first derivative FTIR spectra, together with hierarchical cluster analysis used to construct a dendrogram, showed fluid from large follicles formed a homogeneous closely related cluster, whilst

Ventrolateral medullary respiratory network and a model of cough motor pattern generation.

The primary hypothesis of this study was that the cough motor pattern is produced, at least in part, by the medullary respiratory neuronal network in response to inputs from "cough" and pulmonary stretch receptor relay neurons in the nucleus tractus solitarii. Computer simulations of a distributed network model with proposed connections from the nucleus tractus solitarii to ventrolateral medullary respiratory neurons produced coughlike inspiratory and expiratory motor patterns. Predicted responses of various "types" of neurons (I-DRIVER, I-AUG, I-DEC, E-AUG, and E-DEC) derived from the simulat

Pharyngeal wall vibration detection using an artificial neural network.

An artificial-neural-network-based detector of pharyngeal wall vibration (PWV) is presented. PWV signals the imminent occurrence of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in adults who suffer from OSA syndrome. Automated detection of PWV is very important in enhancing continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy by allowing automatic adjustment of the applied airway pressure by a procedure called automatic positive airway pressure (APAP) therapy. A network with 15 inputs, one output, and two hidden layers, each with two Adaline-nodes, is used as part of a PWV detection scheme. The network is ini

Multimodal Deep Learning for Participatory Public Art Assessment: Integrating Computer Vision and Behavioral Analytics for Community Engagement.

In this work, a deep learning-based multimodal framework for evaluating public engagement with public art is introduced by combining computer vision and behavioral analysis. Existing multimodal models have primarily been applied in domains such as educational settings and behavior analysis, while their application to public art assessment remains limited by challenges in representing subjective human factors, complex behaviors, and interactions across modalities. To address these challenges, the proposed framework employs a Transformer-based architecture to integrate multimodal information and

Enhancing EEG-Based Brain Pattern Recognition Through Functional-Network-Level Volume Conduction Mitigation: Spatially Informed Decay Modeling-Residual Correction.

Background/Objectives: Advancements in neuroscience and machine learning have increasingly enabled brain pattern recognition based on bio-signal measurements, such as electroencephalography (EEG). These developments support next-generation technologies, including brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and AI-assisted systems. However, volume conduction (VC) effects remain a major source of contamination in EEG recordings, affecting both univariate analyses and functional connectivity estimation. Methods: In this work, we propose a VC mitigation method that explicitly models and suppresses VC compone

Vision transformer-based diagnosis of psoriasis and eczema in whole-slide histology.

Psoriasis and eczema are chronic inflammatory skin diseases with overlapping histopathological features, which often lead to diagnostic uncertainty even among experienced dermatopathologists. To address this challenge, we developed a computer-assisted diagnostic framework that combines the Virchow foundation model, pretrained on 1.5 million whole-slide images, with multi-instance learning (MIL) to classify psoriasis and eczema from digitized histopathology slides. Using an internal dataset (n = 40) and an external validation cohort (n = 40), equally balanced between both conditions and annotat

GAMT-GINE: A Graph Isomorphism Network Integrating Continuous Spatial Awareness and Multi-Task Learning for Protein-Ligand Binding Affinity Prediction.

Protein-ligand interactions (PLIs) play a crucial role in drug discovery, and accurately predicting protein-ligand binding affinity (PLA) remains a central challenge in computer-aided drug design. Although graph neural networks (GNNs) have demonstrated considerable potential in molecular modeling, existing methods still face several limitations, including excessive reliance on hand-crafted chemical features, loss of spatial information, and difficulties in integrating heterogeneous affinity labels, which restrict their generalization capability in PLA prediction. To address these challenges, w

Discovery of WRN helicase inhibitors by 3D-CNN docking and ML consensus from traditional Chinese medicine monomers.

The Werner syndrome (WRN) helicase is a validated synthetic-lethal vulnerability in cancers with microsatellite instability (MSI), making WRN inhibition a potential target for cancer treatment. Therefore, a computer-aided drug discovery (CADD) pipeline integrating deep learning-based molecular docking and machine learning classification was employed to identify WRN inhibitors from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) monomers. A library of 2940 TCM monomers was initially filtered by Lipinski's Rule of 5, GNINA deep learning framework utilized 3D Convolutional Neural Networks (3D-CNNs) to capture

Deep learning-based autonomous retinal vein cannulation in ex vivo porcine eyes.

Retinal vein cannulation (RVC) is an emerging method for treating retinal vein occlusion (RVO). The success of this procedure depends on surgeon expertise and, recently, robotic assistance. This paper proposes an autonomous RVC workflow leveraging deep learning and computer vision. Two Steady-Hand Eye Robots (SHERs) controlled a 100-micrometer metal needle and a medical spatula to execute precise tasks. Three convolutional neural networks were trained to predict needle movement direction and identify contact and puncture events. A surgical microscope with an intraoperative optical coherence to

Detection of brain regions responsible for chronic pain in osteoarthritis: an fMRI-based neuroimaging study using deep learning.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pain is a multifaceted condition that has yet to be fully comprehended. It is frequently linked with a range of disorders, particularly osteoarthritis (OA), which arises from the progressive deterioration of the protective cartilage that cushions the bone endings over time. METHODS: In this paper, we examine the impact of chronic pain on the brain using advanced deep learning (DL) algorithms that leverage resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from both OA pain patients and healthy controls. Our study encompasses fMRI data from 51 pain patients a

Design and Experimental Investigation of a Multi-Level Heartbeat Sound Feedback-Based Neurofeedback System: Neural Mechanisms.

Auditory neurofeedback training (NFT) based on brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) has recently entered the precision motor domain as a task-embedded neural state regulation paradigm. Compared to traditional standalone NFT approaches (e.g., relaxation or attention training designed to enhance general cognitive abilities), task-embedded paradigms integrate feedback directly into the motor task execution process. However, this design inevitably creates a dual-task scenario, and the effects of such a scenario on neural activity and behavioral performance have received limited systematic investigatio

Constructing compact Takagi-Sugeno rule systems: identification of complex interactions in epidemiological data.

The Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy rule system is a widely used data mining technique, and is of particular use in the identification of non-linear interactions between variables. However the number of rules increases dramatically when applied to high dimensional data sets (the curse of dimensionality). Few robust methods are available to identify important rules while removing redundant ones, and this results in limited applicability in fields such as epidemiology or bioinformatics where the interaction of many variables must be considered. Here, we develop a new parsimonious TS rule system. We pro
