Spontaneous ventilation versus mechanical ventilation during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for spontaneous pneumothorax: a study protocol for multicenter randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: With the evolution and adoption of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), options for anesthesia control have also seen major developments. Intubated anesthesia with single lung mechanical ventilation VATS (MV-VATS) is considered the standard of care in VATS. However, this type of ventilation strategy has been associated with several adverse effects, which can trigger complications and increase the overall surgical risk. In order to avoid intubated anesthesia related adverse effects, non-intubated spontaneous ventilation VATS (SV-VATS) strategies have been proposed in recent

Visually mediated functioning improves following treatment of hoarding disorder.

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder (HD) is a highly debilitating psychiatric disorder that affects 2-6% of adults. Neuropsychological deficits in visual memory, detection, and categorization have been reported in HD. To date, no study has examined the relationship between neurocognitive functioning and treatment for HD. We aim to determine the association between neurocognitive functioning and treatment outcomes, as well as the impact of HD-specific treatment on cognitive functioning. METHODS: 323 individuals with HD were randomized to 20 weeks of peer- or clinician-led group behavioral treatment.

Roles of healthcare professionals in the management of chronic gastrointestinal diseases with a focus on primary care: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) refers to a group of complex and chronic conditions that requires long-term care delivered by a group of healthcare professionals through a multidisciplinary care model. We conducted a systematic review to examine and understand the role of healthcare professionals in the primary care management of IBD, and identify the gaps in IBD management that could be filled by primary care providers such as general practitioners (GPs) and pharmacists. METHODS: The search strategy retrieved published studies from five databases, and eligible articles w

Homocysteine as a peripheral biomarker in bipolar disorder: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a psychiatric disorder with an uncertain aetiology. Recently, special attention has been given to homocysteine (Hcy), as it has been suggested that alterations in 1-carbon metabolism might be implicated in diverse psychiatric disorders. However, there is uncertainty regarding possible alterations in peripheral Hcy levels in BD. METHODS: This study comprises a meta-analysis comparing serum and plasma Hcy levels in persons with BD and healthy controls. We conducted a systematic search for all eligible English and non-English peer-reviewed articles. RESULTS:

A systematic review of the salient role of feminine norms on substance use among women.

AIMS: Substance use among women is a growing and significant public health concern. Given women's vulnerability to substance-use related consequences, it is essential to understand the factors that explain within-group variability in substance use and related problems. Feminine norms, or the beliefs and expectations of what it means to be a woman, appear to be a promising and theoretically-important social determinant of substance use. The present systematic review identifies the current trends and limitations of research examining feminine norms and substance use outcomes among women. METHOD

Shoulder arthroplasty for post-traumatic osteonecrosis of the humeral head.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis (ON) of the humeral head is a known complication of proximal humeral trauma. Prosthetic replacement may be the last option to treat the associated pain. Depending on the condition of the glenoid, hemiarthroplasty (HA) or total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) can be considered. To date, the peer reviewed literature offers limited direction on the better treatment for this population. METHODS: Between 1973 and 2010, 93 arthroplasties were performed for post-traumatic ON of the humeral head after conservative treatments failed. Of these, 37 HAs and 46 TSAs were monitored fo

The diagnostic utility of clinical tests for differentiating between cervicogenic and other causes of dizziness after a sports-related concussion: An international Delphi study.

OBJECTIVES: Dizziness after a sports-related concussion is very common and is associated with prolonged recovery. The events in sports that cause concussion include strong mechanical forces exerted to the head and neck, potentially injuring the cervical region, the peripheral vestibular and central nervous system, all of which can contribute to a sensation of dizziness. The purpose of this study was to identify proper clinically administered tests and measures that are useful in differentiating between cervicogenic and other causes of dizziness after a sports-related concussion. DESIGN: The D

Effects of vibration training vs. conventional resistance training among community-dwelling older people with sarcopenia: three-arm randomized controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia is a chronic and progressive disease, which is accompanied by the decline in muscle mass, muscle strength, and physical performance with aging, and it can lead to falls, fracture, and premature death. The prevention and treatment of sarcopenia mainly include exercise therapy and nutritional supplement. Exercise therapy is one of the most potential interventions to prevent and/or delay the progression of sarcopenia. Resistance training (RT), one of the most commonly used exercise types, is widely used in the treatment of sarcopenia, while vibration training (VT) is a pr

Effects of transcranial magnetic stimulation on cortical network modulation and functional recovery in patients with chronic ankle injury following surgery: study protocol for randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Single-modality motor rehabilitation is often insufficient to address the complex functional restoration needs of patients with chronic ankle injuries following surgery. Research indicates that non-invasive neuromodulation techniques, such as intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS), may enhance motor recovery by increasing cortical excitability and facilitating neural network reorganisation. Compared with exercise therapy alone, this study aims to explore the rehabilitation efficacy of combining iTBS with exercise therapy in patients with chronic ankle injuries following surg

Community engagement as a foundation for implementation research for group psilocybin assisted therapy in New Mexico.

UNLABELLED: Informed by a community engagement process, we have developed a pragmatic, open-label, hybrid feasibility-implementation study of Group Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy (GPAT) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As psychedelic-assisted therapies begin to enter the broader mental health arena, engaging communities in the design of research and care models is essential to ensuring that those most impacted have access to-and trust in-the treatments being developed. Guided by the principle of "nothing about us without us," the proposed study was designed from the outset to be communi
