Understanding animal fears: a comparison of the cognitive vulnerability and harm-looming models.

BACKGROUND: The Cognitive Vulnerability Model holds that both clinical and sub-clinical manifestations of animal fears are a result of how an animal is perceived, and can be used to explain both individual differences in fear acquisition and the uneven distribution of fears in the population. This study looked at the association between fear of a number of animals and perceptions of the animals as uncontrollable, unpredictable, dangerous and disgusting. Also assessed were the perceived loomingness, prior familiarity, and negative evaluation of the animals as well as possible conditioning exper

Food neophobia and 'picky/fussy' eating in children: a review.

Two factors have been shown to contribute to rejection or acceptance of fruits and vegetables: food neophobia and 'picky/fussy' eating. Food neophobia is generally regarded as the reluctance to eat, or the avoidance of, new foods. In contrast, 'picky/fussy' eaters are usually defined as children who consume an inadequate variety of foods through rejection of a substantial amount of foods that are familiar (as well as unfamiliar) to them. Through understanding the variables which influence the development or expression of these factors (including age, personality, gender, social influences and

Verbal, behavioural and physiological assessment of the generalization of exposure-based fear reduction in a spider-anxious population.

Clinical fear of spiders was assessed in 39 patients before and after exposure treatment and at a 3-month follow-up. The assessment included behavioral, physiological and self-report measures. Some patients were tested in the treatment context (group Same), while others were tested in a different context (group Different). Both groups demonstrated a significant fear reduction from pre- to post-treatment in all measures, which persisted at the 3-month follow-up. Contrary to our expectations, no clear difference was observed between the groups at any moment. However, a 1-year follow-up test of t

Social anxiety and problematic alcohol consumption: the mediating role of drinking motives and situations.

Social anxiety is inconsistently associated with alcohol use variables. To elucidate factors that contribute to the relationship between social anxiety and problematic alcohol use, the present study investigated drinking motives and drinking situations in an undergraduate sample (N=293). Social anxiety was significantly correlated with endorsement of enhancement drinking motives (i.e., drinking to enhance positive experiences or emotions) but not social or coping motives. Social anxiety was also correlated with endorsement of drinking in the following high-risk situations: unpleasant emotions,

Hypervigilance-avoidance pattern in spider phobia.

Cognitive-motivational theories of phobias propose that patients' behavior is characterized by a hypervigilance-avoidance pattern. This implies that phobics initially direct their attention towards fear-relevant stimuli, followed by avoidance that is thought to prevent objective evaluation and habituation. However, previous experiments with highly anxious individuals confirmed initial hypervigilance and yet failed to show subsequent avoidance. In the present study, we administered a visual task in spider phobics and controls, requiring participants to search for spiders. Analyzing eye movement

Speeded detection and increased distraction in fear of spiders: evidence from eye movements.

Anxiety patients exhibit attentional biases toward threat, which have often been demonstrated as increased distractibility by threatening stimuli. In contrast, speeded detection of threat has rarely been shown. Therefore, the authors studied both phenomena in 3 versions of a visual search task while eye movements were recorded continuously. Spider-fearful individuals and nonanxious control participants participated in a target search task, an odd-one-out search task, and a category search task. Evidence for disorder-specific increased distraction by threat was found in all tasks, whereas speed

Ego development and ethnic identity formation in rural American Indian adolescents.

Ethnic identity development was assessed in the context of ego development in 12- to 15-year-old students from a Southeastern American Indian community. Self-protective was the modal level and was characterized by awareness of ethnic group membership but little exploration or self-reflection. Impulsive adolescents had the least developed ethnic identities and highest levels of interpersonal vulnerability. Conformist adolescents expressed positive feelings about ethnic group affiliation, described relationships as harmonious, but demonstrated moderate social anxiety. Postconformist adolescents

Fear of movement: factor structure of the tampa scale of kinesiophobia in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Chronic pain patients often report fears that movement will exacerbate their symptoms. The Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK) was designed to assess fear of movement. Previous findings with the TSK showed inconsistent factor structures and varied measurement properties. The TSK was completed by a sample of 233 patients with fibromyalgia syndrome who were being evaluated for participation in a rehabilitation program. A principal components analysis initially derived a 5-factor solution. However, the factor structure accounted for less than 50% of the variance, and the internal consi

The psychometric properties of the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation (BFNE) Scale in a nonclinical, nonstudent sample. Participants were administered the BFNE Scale, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the UCLA Loneliness Scale. No differences were found across age, but women scored significantly higher on the BFNE Scale than men. Confirmatory factor analysis supported a two-factor solution corresponding to positive and reverse scored items. Internal consistency was excellent for the positive scored factor (alpha=.94), acceptable for the reverse scored factor (alpha=.73),

Repeated exposure of flight phobics to flights in virtual reality.

The present study examined the effects of repeated exposure of flight phobics to flights in virtual reality (VR). Flight phobics were randomly assigned either to complete one VR test flight followed by four VR exposure flights (VR group; N=15) in one lengthy session or to complete one VR test flight followed by a lengthy relaxation training session (relaxation group; N=15). All participants completed a second VR test flight at the end of the session. Fear reports and physiological fear reactions (heart rate, skin conductance level) during VR exposures were registered, and fear of flying was as

Paroxetine for social anxiety and alcohol use in dual-diagnosed patients.

The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of paroxetine to matched placebo in adults with co-occurring social anxiety disorder and alcohol use disorder. Outcome measures included standardized indices of social anxiety and alcohol use. Fifteen individuals meeting DSM-IV criteria for both social anxiety disorder and alcohol use disorder were randomized to treatment. Paroxetine (n = 6) or placebo (n = 9) was given in a double-blind format for 8 weeks using a flexible dosing schedule. Dosing began at 20 mg/d and increased to a target dose of 60 mg/d. There was a sign

Taking the laboratory to the skies: ambulatory assessment of self-report, autonomic, and respiratory responses in flying phobia.

We evaluated the feasibility of recording multiple physiological anxiety measures during a flight and how well they could distinguish flight phobics from controls. Benefits of baseline adjustment and transformation for all variables and adjustment of heart rate by ventilation to give additional heart rate were calculated. Effect size, one measure of the power to discriminate groups, was between 1.1 and 1.7 for heart rate measures. Although respiratory rate and minute ventilation, indicators of hyperventilation, did not differ between groups, phobics paused more during inspiration than did cont

No evidence for opioid-mediated analgesia induced by phobic fear.

The influence of anxiety on acute pain sensation was investigated, studying the relative contribution of endogenous opioids and attentional mechanisms. Thirty-six spider phobics received mildly painful electrical stimulation, while anxiety and focus of attention were manipulated within subjects. The opioid antagonist naloxone or placebo was administered between subjects to examine an analgesia owing to anxiety-induced endorphinergic activity. In contrast to earlier findings, attention towards pain failed to increase pain as opposed to distraction from pain, probably owing to a less effective a

[Disability: a proposal for an anamnestic questionnaire in the evaluation of the degree of disability caused by disorders of equilibrium].

Correct identification and evaluation of balance disorders and an assessment of their repercussions on a patient's life are common problems faced by the otoneurologist. These symptoms may not infrequently have a chronic or recurrent course and can lead to in restrictions in the patient's everyday life and even have consequences for the patient' mental health. In the doctor-patient relationship anamnesis is of crucial importance in diagnosis as well as in establishing a relationship of professional confidence with the patient which may influence the outcome of the treatment. A cerebellar-vestibular explanation for fears/phobias: hypothesis and study.

To clarify and test the cerebellar-vestibular (CV) basis of fears/phobias, responses of 4000 learning disabled children, adolescents, and adults with neurological and electronystagmographic (ENG) evidence of CV-dysfunction were analyzed for anxiety-related symptoms. Of this sample, 64.6% indicated fears/phobias; females were significantly more predisposed; mixed-handedness was significantly related to fears of heights and reduced vestibular response or asymmetric vestibular functioning. Also, adults had a higher incidence of the specific fears/phobias characterizing agoraphobia than children a
