A hamster model for Marburg virus infection accurately recapitulates Marburg hemorrhagic fever.

Marburg virus (MARV), a close relative of Ebola virus, is the causative agent of a severe human disease known as Marburg hemorrhagic fever ( … kably, this model displayed almost all of the clinical features of MHF seen in humans and non-human primates, including coagulation abnormalities, hemorrhagic manifestations, petechial rash, and a severely dysregulated immune response. This MHF hamster model represents a powerful tool for further dissecting MARV pathogenesis and accelerating the developmen …

The baboon (Papio sp.) as a model for female reproduction studies.

BIOLOGY AND REPRODUCTION: Due to their size and anatomical similarity to humans, baboons make an excellent model for reproductive studies. Baboons have a simple short cervix, muscular uterus, ovaries just lateral to the uterus and similar vasculature to that of humans. Because of the size of the animals, instruments designed for use in women can be readily used on baboons. Noninvasive determination of phase of estrous cycle is readily made by observation of changes in perineal sexual skin turgor and color. ADVANTAGES: Some advantages of use of baboons compared to other nonhuman primates is th…

Two Cases of Cleft Lip and Other Congenital Anomalies in Wild Chimpanzees Living in Kibale National Park, Uganda.

DESIGN: Observations of wild chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) were conducted in Kibale National Park, Uganda, at the sites of Sebitoli and Ngogo. RESULTS: We report the first two cases of cleft lip in wild chimpanzees. Additionally, some other chimpanzees in the Sebitoli community show facial dysplasia and congenital anomalies, such as patches of depigmented hairs and limb defects. CONCLUSIONS: Cleft lip has been documented in several species of nonhuman primates, but much remains unknown about the occurrence of cleft lip and cleft palate in great apes, probably because such mal…

Orthopoxvirus infection among wildlife in Zambia.

Human monkeypox is a viral zoonosis caused by monkeypox virus, an orthopoxvirus (OPXV). The majority of human monkeypox cases have been reported in moist forested regions in West and Central Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). In this study we investigated zoonotic OPXV infection among wild animals in Zambia, which shares a border with DRC, to assess the geographical distribution of OPXV. We screened for OPXV antibodies in sera from non-human primates (NHPs), rodents and shrews by ELISA, and performed real-time PCR to detect OPXV DNA in spleen samples. Serologic…

Electroconvulsive therapy induces neurogenesis in frontal rat brain areas.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective therapy for several psychiatric disorders, including severe major depression, mania and certain forms of schizophrenia. It had been proposed that ECT acts by modulating local plasticity via the stimulation of neurogenesis. In fact, among antidepressant therapies, ECT is the most robust enhancer of neurogenesis in the hippocampus of rodents and non-human primates. The existence of ECT-triggered neurogenesis in other brain areas, particularly in those adjacent to the other main locus of neurogenesis, the subventricular zone (SVZ), had so far remain…

Faunal change in the Turkana Basin during the late Oligocene and Miocene.

Faunal evolution over the last 65 million years of earth's history was dominated by mammalian radiations, but much of this era is poorly rep … a and subsequent establishment of another equally diverse fauna, both involving advanced catarrhine primates, are recorded in sites in the Turkana Basin, despite the poorly represented record of Cenozoic faunas elsewhere in sub-Saharan Africa. BACKGROUND: A comprehensive survey of the prevalence of congenital anomalies in baboons has not been previously reported. We report the cong … : The baboon has an overall frequency of congenital anomalies similar to humans and other non-human primates. Although the most frequently affected systems are similar, congenital anomalies involving the digestive system appear to be less common in the baboon.

Bilateral hydronephrosis secondary to endometriosis managed by endoscopic ureteral stent placement in a captive Guinea baboon (Papio papio).

Spontaneous endometriosis is an estrogen-dependent, progressive and painful disease that affects a variety of nonhuman primates, including several species of baboons (Papio sp.). This case documents multimodal management of severe endometriosis in a captive female baboon within a zoological institution. An 18-yr-old, intact female Guinea baboon (Papio papio) was found to have an enlarged uterus. Fifteen months post ovariohysterctomy, scarring associated with endometrial tissue resulted in ureteral strictures, bilateral hydronephrosis, and azotemia. Cystoscopic placement of bilateral ureteral s…

Clinical xenotransplantation: the next medical revolution?

The shortage of organs and cells from deceased individuals continues to restrict allotransplantation. Pigs could provide an alternative source of tissue and cells but the immunological challenges and other barriers associated with xenotransplantation need to be overcome. Transplantation of organs from genetically modified pigs into non-human primates is now not substantially limited by hyperacute, acute antibody-mediated, or cellular rejection, but other issues have become more prominent, such as development of thrombotic microangiopathy in the graft or systemic consumptive coagulopathy in the…

Balantidium coli-induced pulmonary haemorrhage with iron deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Balantidium coli, a ciliated protozoan parasite that infects primates and pigs, and is the largest protozoan to infect humans, is a well-known cause of diarrhoea and dysentery in humans. Extra-intestinal disease is uncommon, however. OBJECTIVE: We describe a case of lung involvement, with severe pulmonary haemorrhage resulting in iron deficiency anaemia and respiratory failure, of a 20-year-old, immune-competent man. RESULTS: Diagnosis was made by bronchial biopsy and lavage, which showed numerous trophozoites compatible with B. coli with a background of acute inflammatory cells.…

A pharmacokinetic study of enrofloxacin and its active metabolite ciprofloxacin after oral and intramuscular dosing of enrofloxacin in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

Enrofloxacin is used for treating Shigellosis in non-human primates; however, there are no reports describing its pharmacokinetics in rhesus monkeys. Pharmacokinetic data in intended target species (rhesus) help to determine the proper dose regimen. Blood levels of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin (enrofloxacin's active metabolite), were determined after either intramuscular or oral dosing of enrofloxacin for 7 days in a cross-over study. Levels of both antibiotics were determined by solid phase extraction followed by reversed-phase chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Results indicate …

Absence of inclusion body formation in the MPTP mouse model of Parkinson's disease.

Formation of alpha-synuclein aggregation and Lewy bodies (LBs) are hallmarks of Parkinson's disease (PD) and other related diseases. The dopaminergic neurotoxin, MPTP, replicates many of the pathological signs and motoric features of PD in primates and rodents by selective destruction of dopamine (DA) neurons of the substantia nigra. In this study, groups of adult wild-type C57BL6 mice were treated with MPTP either acutely (20 mg/kg, every 2 h x 4 for 1 day), semi-chronically (30 mg/kg/day for 5 days), or chronically (25 mg/kg MPTP with 250 mg/kg probenecid 2 times/week for 5 weeks). Mice brai…

Sylvatic transmission of arboviruses among Bornean orangutans.

Wild populations of nonhuman primates live in regions of sylvatic arbovirus transmission. To assess the status of arbovirus transmission in Bornean forests and the susceptibility of wild orangutans to arboviral infection, blood samples of wild orangutans, semi-captive orangutans, and humans were examined.
