Sexual dysfunction in uremia.

In summary, sexual dysfunction is a common finding in both men and women with chronic renal failure. Common disturbances include erectile dysfunction in men, menstrual abnormalities in women, and decreased libido and fertility in both sexes. These abnormalities are primarily organic in nature and are related to uremia as well as the other comorbid conditions that frequently accompany the chronic renal failure patient. Fatigue and psychosocial factors related to the presence of a chronic disease are also contributory factors. Disturbances in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis can be detect

Toward a unified theory of serotonin dysregulation in eating and related disorders.

Patients with eating disorders (EDs) exhibit several clinical features and biologic findings indicative of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) dysregulation. These include feeding disturbances, depression and suicide, impulsivity and violence, anxiety and harm avoidance, obsessive-compulsive features, seasonal variation of symptoms, as well as disturbances in neuroendocrine and vascular tissues, as well as other neurochemical systems linked to 5-HT, such as temperature. This review attempts to integrate available results from controlled studies in humans, with particular focus on cerebrospin

Factors Associated with Immunosuppressive Adherence in Liver Transplant Recipients Treated with Once- and Twice-Daily Tacrolimus.

Background and Objectives: Immunosuppressive medication adherence is essential for maintaining graft function and long-term survival after liver transplantation, yet adherence may be influenced by treatment complexity, psychosocial burden, and post-transplant medication changes. Although once-daily tacrolimus (TAC) has been proposed as a regimen-simplification strategy, the relationship between TAC dosing frequency and adherence in liver transplant recipients remains insufficiently clarified. This study aimed to evaluate the association between TAC dosing frequency and medication adherence in

Health-related quality of life in patients with basal cell naevus syndrome and high-frequency basal cell carcinoma: a questionnaire study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) can result from a genetic disease, such as basal cell naevus syndrome (BCNS) or develop without a genetic predisposition, known as high-frequency BCC (HF-BCC). Multiple BCCs require frequent interventions, which may impact quality of life (QoL). Data on QoL in these patients and the influence of number of BCCs on QoL remain scarce. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate QoL in patients with BCNS and HF-BCC and the impact of number of BCCs on QoL. METHODS: Patients with BCNS were recruited through the Maastricht University Medical Centre (MUMC+), the online

Quality of Life Among Breast Cancer Survivors Treated With Modified Radical Mastectomy: A Cross-Sectional Study Using the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-BR42 Questionnaire.

Introduction In India, breast cancer is often diagnosed at advanced stages, leading to a high proportion of patients undergoing modified radical mastectomy (MRM) as the primary surgical treatment. While effective, MRM is associated with significant long-term physical and psychosocial morbidity. This study aimed to assess the quality of life (QoL) of breast cancer survivors treated with MRM in a tertiary care center, utilizing the updated European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QLQ-BR42 questionnaire. Methods A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at the

Lingering symptoms in non-hospitalized patients with COVID-19 - a prospective survey study of symptom expression and effects on mental health in Germany.

BACKGROUND: The infection rates with SARS-CoV 2 virus, known since 2019, are currently significantly weakened in their dynamics. Nevertheless, COVID 19 is still a common disease, which in most cases is overcome quite well and can be treated by the general practitioner. Despite an initially uncomplicated disease progression, the long-term consequences can be considerable. Symptoms persisting over a period of more than 12 weeks after infection are summarized as Post-COVID (PC) syndrome. The aim of this study is to document the symptom expression in PC patients in the outpatient setting, with a m

Deep brain stimulation of the nucleus accumbens for the management of eating disorders: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders are disabling, deadly, and costly diseases that considerably impair physical health and disrupt psychosocial functioning. The nucleus accumbens, with its involvement in hedonic feeling, satiety signaling, and reward-based learning, has garnered attention as a potential target to understand the pathophysiology of eating disorders. Despite the advancement in conservative therapeutic strategies, treatment-resistant cases remain a significant concern, highlighting the need for novel approaches. This scoping review aims to explore the emerging role of deep brain stimu…

Prevalence of eating disorder symptomatology among outpatients referred to health promotion from somatic hospital departments.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: All eating disorders (EDs) lead to a significant decrease of health status, psychosocial functioning and quality of life (QoL). Individuals with untreated binge eating disorder (BED) tend to gain weight over time, which may contribute to serious health issues. In somatic hospital departments, some outpatients have reduced compliance with lifestyle changes. This may, to some extent, be due to patients with an undiagnosed ED receiving the incorrect treatment. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of EDs among patients referred to lifestyle cou…

The multifactorial aetiology and management of premenstrual dysphoric disorder with leuprorelin acetate.

Up to 18% of women of reproductive age may experience symptoms during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or its more severe form, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). A plethora of symptoms have been described, but both are commonly associated with other mood-related disorders such as major depression causing significant life impairment. Originally known as late luteal phase dysphoric disorder in the DSM-III-R (American Psychiatric Association 1987), the syndrome was renamed PMDD in the DSM-IV (American Psychiatric Association 1994). Between 3% and

Prevelance of depression and anxiety with their effect on quality of life in chronic kidney disease patients.

Chronic kidney disease is one of the most common chronic diseases globally. Many studies have shown it is strongly associated with increased social and psychological problems such as depression and anxiety which are considered as common psychiatric disorders that occur in patients with chronic kidney disease. We investigated the prevalence of depression, anxiety and perception of quality of life in a sample of chronic kidney disease patients at the Jordan University Hospital. We aimed to see any association of the mental health in these patients; mainly depression and anxiety with their qualit

Extended-release pharmacotherapy for opioid use disorder (EXPO): protocol for an open-label randomised controlled trial of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of injectable buprenorphine versus sublingual tablet buprenorphine and oral liquid methadone.

BACKGROUND: Sublingual tablet buprenorphine (BUP-SL) and oral liquid methadone (MET) are the daily, standard-of-care (SOC) opioid agonist treatment medications for opioid use disorder (OUD). A sizable proportion of the OUD treatment population is not exposed to sufficient treatment to attain the desired clinical benefit. Two promising therapeutic technologies address this deficit: long-acting injectable buprenorphine and personalised psychosocial interventions (PSI). This study will determine (A) the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness - monthly injectable, extended-release (BUP-XR) in a head

[Psychosocial Interventions for People with a First-Episode Psychosis: A Narrative and Critical Review].

Objective Treatment guidelines for the treatment of psychotic disorders suggest evidence-based interventions. These interventions target several domains such as self-management of clinical symptoms, social, familial and love relationships as well as cognitive functioning. However, these general guidelines do not provide specific evidence for people with a first-episode psychosis (FEP). The objective of this narrative and critical review is to present evidence supporting the interventions suggested by the treatment guidelines that were validated in people with a FEP, particularly those interven

Internet-Administered Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy for Somatic Symptom Disorder With Centralized Symptoms: A Preliminary Efficacy Trial.

Background: There is growing evidence that trauma, psychosocial conflict, and difficulties with emotional processing contribute to centralized somatic symptoms. Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy (EAET) was developed to address these factors and reduce symptoms, and EAET has shown efficacy in face-to-face formats. No trial of an internet-delivered EAET (I-EAET) exists, however, so we developed such an intervention and conducted an uncontrolled feasibility and potential efficacy trial of I-EAET for patients with Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) with centralized symptoms (SSD-CS). Method:

Screening for depression in women during pregnancy or the first year postpartum and in the general adult population: a protocol for two systematic reviews to update a guideline of the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care.

BACKGROUND: In 2018, the World Health Organization reported that depression is the most common cause of disability worldwide, with over 300 million people currently living with depression. Depression affects an individual's physical health and well-being, impacts psychosocial functioning, and has specific negative short- and long-term effects on maternal health, child health, developmental trajectories, and family health. The aim of these reviews is to identify evidence on the benefits and harms of screening for depression in the general adult population and in pregnant and postpartum women. …
