The authors present the results of serological surveys for leptospirosis in rodents, cattle and humans, carried out in the vicinity of two large water reservoirs in Eastern Slovakia. Of the total number of 243 rodents covered by the surveys, 8.2% yielded positive reactions with leptospiral antigens. In most cases the sera reacted with L. grippotyphosa and L. sejroe . Of 168 samples of cattle serum, 13 serum samples, i.e. 7.7.%, yielded positive reactions, also with L. sejroe and L. grippotyphosa. Data are presented on immunochemical properties of lipids, the most important group of biologically active substances. Problems on antigenic, immunogenic and adjuvant activities of lipids are considered. A possible use of lipid antigens for diagnosis of different infectious diseases is demonstrated and main principles of their construction are suggested. Data are available on immunogenicity of phospho- and glycolipid mixtures as well as on practical application of the obtained antibodies. Guidelines for the use of immunochemical properties of lipids are outlined.

The purified Schistosoma mansoni adult microsomal antigen, MAMA, was used in the quantitative single-tube kinetic dependent enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (k-ELISA) to measure antibody levels of various human patient sera. The 511 serum specimens tested were from patients with both homologous and heterologous infections. Of 166 women with acute pelvic inflammatory disease, Mycoplasma hominis was isolated from the cervix of 91 (54.8%), Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from 37 (22.3%), and Neisseria gonorrhoeae was isolated from nine (5.4%). The indirect fluorescent antibody (FA) test was evaluated for the serodiagnosis of yellow fever (YF) cases and for detection of antibodies after 17D YF vaccination. Results were compared with those of standard serological tests, reactions with heterologous flaviviral antigens were determined, and both IgM and IgG antibodies were measured.
