Circulating catecholamines are associated with biobehavioral factors and anxiety symptoms in head and neck cancer patients.

Studies have shown that stress-related catecholamines may affect cancer progression. However, little is known about catecholamine secretion … higher plasma epinephrine levels. These findings suggest that head and neck cancer patients display sympathetic nervous system hyperactivity, and that changes in circulating catecholamines may be associated with alcohol consumption, as well as withdrawal-related anxiety symptoms.

Muscle sympathetic nerve activity-coupled changes in brain activity during sustained muscle pain.

INTRODUCTION: Long-lasting experimental muscle pain elicits divergent muscle sympathetic responses, with some individuals exhibiting a persistent increase in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), and others a decrease. These divergent responses are thought to result from sustained functional changes in specific brain regions that modulate the cardiovascular responses to pain. AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate brain regions that are functionally coupled to the generation of an MSNA burst at rest and to determine their behavior during tonic muscle pain. METHODS: Functional magn

Independent prognostic importance of respiratory instability and sympathetic nerve activity in patients with chronic heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory instability in chronic heart failure (CHF) is characterized by irregularly rapid respiration or non-periodic breathing rather than by Cheyne-Stokes respiration. We developed a new quantitative measure of respiratory instability (RSI) and examined its independent prognostic impact upon CHF. METHODS: In 87 patients with stable CHF, respiratory flow and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) were simultaneously recorded. RSI was calculated from the frequency distribution of respiratory spectral components and very low frequency components. RESULTS: During a mean follow

Cardiac Sympathetic Hyperactivity in a Patient with Guillain-Barré Syndrome: An Analysis Using Cardiac [(123)I] Metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) Scintigraphy.

A 31-year-old woman gradually developed weakness in the lower extremities and gait disturbance. Subsequently, the patient developed severe constipation and hypertension with tachycardia. Nerve conduction studies revealed demyelinating polyneuropathy. Serum anti-GQ1b IgG antibody was detected. The levels of plasma noradrenaline and dopamine and urinary noradrenaline were elevated. Cardiac [(123)I] metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy showed a normal H/M rate at the early phase and an elevated washout rate. According to these findings, the patient was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrom

Inter-individual responses to experimental muscle pain: Baseline anxiety ratings and attitudes to pain do not determine the direction of the sympathetic response to tonic muscle pain in humans.

We have recently shown that intramuscular infusion of hypertonic saline, causing pain lasting ~60min, increases muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in one group of subjects, yet decreases it in another. Across subjects these divergent sympathetic responses to long-lasting muscle pain are consistent over time and cannot be foreseen on the basis of baseline MSNA, blood pressure, heart rate or sex. We predicted that differences in anxiety or attitudes to pain may account for these differences. Psychometric measures were assessed prior to the induction of pain using the State and Trait Anxiet

Tonically Active cAMP-Dependent Signaling in the Ventrolateral Medulla Regulates Sympathetic and Cardiac Vagal Outflows.

The ventrolateral medulla contains presympathetic and vagal preganglionic neurons that control vasomotor and cardiac vagal tone, respectively. G protein-coupled receptors influence the activity of these neurons. Gα s activates adenylyl cyclases, which drive cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-dependent targets: protein kinase A (PKA), the exchange protein activated by cAMP (EPAC), and hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels. The aim was to determine the cardiovascular effects of activating and inhibiting these targets at presympathetic and cardiac vagal preganglion

Motion sickness is associated with an increase in vestibular modulation of skin but not muscle sympathetic nerve activity.

We have previously shown that sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation (sGVS), delivered bilaterally at frequencies of 0.08-2.00 Hz, causes a pronounced modulation of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSNA), together with robust frequency-dependent illusions of side-to-side motion. At low frequencies of sGVS (≤0.2 Hz), some subjects report nausea, so we tested the hypothesis that vestibular modulation of MSNA and SSNA is augmented in individuals reporting nausea. MSNA was recorded via tungsten microelectrodes inserted into the left common peroneal

Impact of CPAP on physical exercise tolerance and sympathetic-vagal balance in patients with chronic heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Chronic heart failure (CHF) leads to exercise intolerance. However, non-invasive ventilation is able to improve functional capacity of patients with CHF. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) on physical exercise tolerance and heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with CHF. Method : Seven men with CHF (62 ± 8 years) and left ventricle ejection fraction of 41 ± 8% were submitted to an incremental symptom-limited exercise test (IT) on the cicloergometer. On separate days, patients were randomized to perfo

Major contribution of the medial amygdala to hypertension in BPH/2J genetically hypertensive mice.

BPH/2J mice are recognized as a neurogenic model of hypertension primarily based on overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system and greater neuronal activity in key autonomic cardiovascular regulatory brain regions. The medial amygdala (MeAm) is a forebrain region that integrates the autonomic response to stress and is the only region found to have greater Fos during the night and daytime in BPH/2J compared with BPN/3J mice. To determine the contribution of the MeAm to hypertension, the effect of neuronal ablation on blood pressure (BP) was assessed in BPH/2J (n=7) and normotensive BPN/3J m…

Ventricular sympathetic innervation in patients with transposition of the great arteries after arterial switch operation and Rastelli procedure: impact of arterial dissection and coronary reimplantation.

BACKGROUND: Coronary flow reserve (CFR) is reduced in patients with transposition of the great arteries (TGA) after the arterial switch operation (ASO). Dissection of the great arteries and coronary reimplantation may result in sympathetic denervation, with a negative effect on myocardial perfusion. METHODS AND RESULTS: 18 patients with TGA participated in the study; 9 had ASO (20.8±5.8 years). Controls were 9 patients after Rastelli procedure (22.1±6.8 years). Sympathetic innervation was measured by positron emission tomography using(11)C epinephrine (EPI). Left ventricular EPI-retention ran

The effect of long-term left ventricular assist device support on myocardial sympathetic activity in patients with non-ischaemic dilated cardiomyopathy.

AIMS: Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) patients have abundant levels of norepinephrine secondary to failure of the norepinephrine transporter uptake mechanism. Little is known about the effects of an LV assist device (LVAD) on cardiac sympathetic innervations and norepinephrine transporter dysfunction. This study examines the effects of continuous-flow HeartMate II LVAD on cardiac sympathetic innervations using [(123)I]metaiodobenzylguanidine ([(123)I]MIBG) nuclear imaging. METHODS AND RESULTS: After injecting 431 ± 21 MBq of [(123)I]MIBG, planar scintigraphy was performed at 15 min and 4 h in 14

Sympathetic activation and vasoregulation in response to carbohydrate ingestion in patients with congestive heart failure.

BACKGROUND: In normal individuals, carbohydrate ingestion increases sympathetic vasoconstrictor activity but causes net vasodilatation in the same vascular bed. This study quantified the effects of carbohydrate ingestion on muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) and vasoregulation in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). We hypothesized that high resting levels of MSNA in patients with CHF would blunt further increases in MSNA following carbohydrate ingestion and that their sympathetic activation would restrain vasodilatation. METHODS: Eleven patients with treated severe CHF and 11

Cardiac-locked bursts of muscle sympathetic nerve activity are absent in familial dysautonomia.

Familial dysautonomia (Riley-Day syndrome) is an hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy (HSAN type III), expressed at birth, that is associated with reduced pain and temperature sensibilities and absent baroreflexes, causing orthostatic hypotension as well as labile blood pressure that increases markedly during emotional excitement. Given the apparent absence of functional baroreceptor afferents, we tested the hypothesis that the normal cardiac-locked bursts of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) are absent in patients with familial dysautonomia. Tungsten microelectrodes were inserte

Changes in heart rate dynamics of patients with schizophrenia treated with risperidone.

Neurocardiac dysregulation has been reported in schizophrenia. Indices of heart rate variability (HRV) are useful in assessing the status of cardiac autonomic regulation. We explored within-subject changes in HRV indices in acutely ill patients with schizophrenia treated with risperidone. Sixteen medication-naïve or medication-free patients with DSM-IV schizophrenia completed electrocardiogram (ECG) assessments at baseline and after six weeks of treatment with risperidone. Indices of HRV were extracted from 5-min resting ECG recordings and compared to those obtained from control subjects match

A power-law distribution of inter-spike intervals in renal sympathetic nerve activity in salt-sensitive hypertension-induced chronic heart failure.

To assess sympathetic variability in chronic heart failure (CHF), we evaluated a distribution of inter-spike intervals (ISIs) in renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) in salt-sensitive hypertension-induced CHF (DSSH-CHF) rats. Dahl salt-sensitive rats were fed an 8% NaCl diet for 9 weeks to induce salt-sensitive hypertension-induced CHF. ISIs in RSNA were obtained from chronically instrumented conscious rats, and counts (frequency) and ranks of ISIs in RSNA were plotted with a histogram. We found that ISIs in RSNA followed a power-law distribution in rats, and the power-law distribution of I

[Heart failure and sleep apnea].

Sleep-disordered breathing is one of the important factors contributing to the development and/or progression of heart failure (HF). This condition is related to recurring attacks of apnea, hypopnea, and hyperpnea, sleep disruptions, arousals, intermittent hypoxemia, hypocapnia, and hypercapnia, and intrathoracic pressure changes. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction (apnea and hypopnea), increased breathing effort against totally or partially occluded upper airway, and sleep disruptions. Cardiovascular consequences are the most serious complicat

[Recovery of the cardiovascular system and the state of its autonomic regulation after prior long hemorrhagic shock during vaccination with tetanus and diphtheria anatoxins].

Tetanus anatoxin was shown to have a stimulant effect on the cardiovascular system and its autonomic regulation, which produced a longer posthemorrhagic survival in the controls with the least pronounced dystrophic changes in the myocardium. Prior vaccination with diphtheria anatoxins was found to promote animals' survival, by reducing reperfusion injury in the presence of long-term systemic hypoperfusion, early exhaustion of sympathetic autonomic cardiac rhythm regulation, and myocardial dystrophic and necrobiotic changes resulting in the development of cardiosclerosis.

Ultrastructural changes of posterior lingual glands after hypoglossal denervation in hamsters.

Posterior lingual glands consist of two sets of minor salivary glands that serve important functions in oral physiology. To investigate the hypothesis that the hypoglossal nerve provides sympathetic innervation to the posterior lingual glands, we examined ultrastructural changes in the glands following hypoglossal denervation. In the posterior deep lingual glands (of von Ebner), the serous acinar cells showed a decrease in the number of secretory granules and an increase in lipofuscin accumulation. The ratios of cells containing lipofuscin granules were 11.39, 36.49 and 50.46%, respectively, o
