Advancements in the clinical management of adhesive small bowel obstruction: A perspective.

This study rigorously addresses adhesive small bowel obstruction (ASBO), a common yet severe complication following abdominal surgery, marked by fibrous adhesions that disrupt normal intestinal operations. These adhesions often result in profound symptoms including severe abdominal pain and vomiting, and may lead to critical outcomes such as intestinal ischemia and necrosis. It delineates the considerable strain ASBO places on healthcare systems globally, highlighting its frequent occurrence post-surgery and the associated high medical costs and negative impacts on patient quality of life. The

Albumin-bilirubin score as a practical tool for prognostication in metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease.

Metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has become the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, yet reliable tools for prognostication remain limited. Fibrosis-based indices such as the fibrosis-4 and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score are widely used but primarily reflect structural damage rather than functional decline. The albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score, originally established to assess hepatic reserve in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, provides a simple and objective measure of liver function derived from routine laboratory parameters. Recent vali

A system for functional studies of the major virulence factor of malaria parasites.

PfEMP1 is a variable antigen displayed on erythrocytes infected with the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. PfEMP1 mediates binding of the infected cell to the endothelium of blood vessels, a cause of severe malaria. Each parasite encodes ~60 different PfEMP1 variants but only one is expressed at a time. Switching between variants underlies immune evasion in the host and variant-specific severity of disease. PfEMP1 is difficult to study due to expression heterogeneity between parasites which also renders genetic modification approaches ineffective. Here, we used selection-linked integrati

Virally-initiated pain states: phenotypes, mechanisms, and future directions.

The recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has underscored the significance of viral infections, affecting billions of lives and costing trillions of dollars globally. Even beyond SARS-CoV-2, common infections with viruses like influenza, HIV, and herpesviruses have profound impacts beyond their typical manifestations, often triggering acute and chronic pain syndromes that can be life-altering. These virally induced pain states can arise through direct viral replication within neurons, or indirectly, via immune responses to infection in both the contexts of afferent signaling in the dorsal root ganglion (

Tertiary Lymphoid Structures in Tuberculosis: Persistence, Protection, and Pathology.

Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), is a major public health burden responsible for over a million deaths each year. A deeper understanding of the mechanisms that balance protective immunity and immunopathology is essential for developing more effective therapeutics. This review focuses on the dynamic interplay between CD4+ T cells and B cells in the lung, with an emphasis on their interactions in tertiary lymphoid structures (TLS). TLS are immune cell aggregates that arise in inflamed, nonlymphoid tissues, range from loosely to highly organized clusters, and serve a

Multi-Modal Multi-Array Electrochemical and Optical Sensor Suite for a Biological CubeSat Payload.

CubeSats have emerged as cost-effective platforms for biological research in low Earth orbit (LEO). However, they have traditionally been limited to optical absorbance sensors for studying microbial growth. This work has made improvements to the sensing capabilities of these small satellites by incorporating electrochemical ion-selective pH and pNa sensors with optical absorbance sensors to enrich biological experimentation and greatly expand the capabilities of these payloads. We have designed, built, and tested a multi-modal multi-array electrochemical-optical sensor module and its ancillary

Navigating uncharted waters: assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: challenges and innovations.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), necessitating adaptations across pre-transplant, transplantation, and post-transplant phases. HSCT recipients with compromised immune systems face heightened risks of severe COVID-19 outcomes, including increased mortality. The pandemic prompted significant changes in treatment strategies, with many patients experiencing delays or deferrals in autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), alongside adjustments to chemotherapy regimens to prevent disease recurrence. Clinical practices have evolved to

Harnessing Ruthenium and Copper Catalysts for Formate Dehydrogenase Reactions.

Formic acid (HCOOH) is a promising source of hydrogen energy that can be used to produce hydrogen in a more economical and ecological way. Formic acid is a simple carboxylic acid with a high hydrogen concentration and is generally stable, making it useful as a hydrogen transporter. Catalytic dehydrogenation is usually used to extract hydrogen from formic acid; this process releases hydrogen gas and yields carbon dioxide as a byproduct. Comparing this technology to conventional hydrogen generation methods, there are several benefits, such as the utilization of the formic acid handling infrastru

Targeting Macrophage Polarization for Reinstating Homeostasis following Tissue Damage.

Tissue regeneration and remodeling involve many complex stages. Macrophages are critical in maintaining micro-environmental homeostasis by regulating inflammation and orchestrating wound healing. They display high plasticity in response to various stimuli, showing a spectrum of functional phenotypes that vary from M1 (pro-inflammatory) to M2 (anti-inflammatory) macrophages. While transient inflammation is an essential trigger for tissue healing following an injury, sustained inflammation (e.g., in foreign body response to implants, diabetes or inflammatory diseases) can hinder tissue healing a

Oral health of adolescents in West Africa: prioritizing its social determinants.

Oral health is a major public health issue in West Africa, yet it has gotten little attention. Individual and group disparities in health status are influenced by social determinants of health (SDH), which also affect oral health. Adolescence is a significant transition into adulthood, a time when the SDH can contribute to lifelong health status. This article explored the SDH associated with oral health behaviour, perception, and oral health development amongst adolescents in West Africa. This article engaged articles published in peer-reviewed journals relating to adolescents' oral health and

Cross species systems biology discovers glial DDR2, STOM, and KANK2 as therapeutic targets in progressive supranuclear palsy.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative parkinsonian disorder characterized by cell-type-specific tau lesions in neurons and glia. Prior work uncovered transcriptome changes in human PSP brains, although their cell-specificity is unknown. Further, systematic data integration and experimental validation platforms to prioritize brain transcriptional perturbations as therapeutic targets in PSP are currently lacking. In this study, we combine bulk tissue (n = 408) and single nucleus RNAseq (n = 34) data from PSP and control brains with transcriptome data from a mouse tauopathy

Genomics for public health and international surveillance of antimicrobial resistance.

Historically, epidemiological investigation and surveillance for bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has relied on low-resolution isolate-based phenotypic analyses undertaken at local and national reference laboratories. Genomic sequencing has the potential to provide a far more high-resolution picture of AMR evolution and transmission, and is already beginning to revolutionise how public health surveillance networks monitor and tackle bacterial AMR. However, the routine integration of genomics in surveillance pipelines still has considerable barriers to overcome. In 2022, a workshop seri

The Impact of Varying Nipple Properties on Infant Feeding Physiology and Performance Throughout Ontogeny in a Validated Animal Model.

Infant feeding requires successful interactions between infant physiology and the maternal (or bottle) nipple. Within artificial nipples, there is variation in both nipple stiffness and flow rates, as well as variation in infant physiology as they grow and mature. However, we have little understanding into how infants interact with variable nipple properties to generate suction and successfully feed. We designed nipples with two different stiffnesses and hole sizes and measured infant feeding performance through ontogeny using a pig model. We evaluated their response to nipple properties using

Consolidating evidence on the role of insulin resistance in major depressive disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The circular interactions between type 2 diabetes (TMD2) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are well documented but the understanding of their mechanisms has only recently gained more clarity. Latest research indicates, that the association between TMD2 and MDD is largely mediated by insulin resistance (IR). RECENT FINDINGS: A metabolic subtype of MDD can be distinguished from other MDD subpopulations, that is characterized by predominantly atypical clinical presentation, IR and different responsiveness to antidepressant interventions. IR is a predictor of nonresponse to s
