PURPOSE: The treatment of hemimandibular hyperplasia (HH) is difficult by performing condylectomy and orthognathic surgery in one stage. This study investigated the clinical feasibility of treating HH with computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) cutting and drilling guides and the pre-bent titanium plates to improve the accuracy of operation to avoid condyle reconstruction.
METHODS: 12 patients diagnosed with HH were included in this study from 2014 to 2018. Conservative condylectomy and bimaxillary orthognathic surgery were performed in all patients. The CAD/CAM cutt

Background: Yoga is a popular activity involving extreme wrist positioning and extension loading. Our purpose was to quantify the prevalence of preoperative yoga participation and characterize subsequent ability to return to yoga in patients undergoing volar locked plating of distal radius fractures. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all cases of distal radius open reduction internal fixation between August 2015 and March 2017. Patients were included if they were treated with volar locked plating and if they participated in yoga on a regular basis preoperatively. Patients were contacted at

Displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures can be treated with open reduction and internal fixation through various methods, including the extensile lateral approach, sinus tarsi approach, percutaneous reduction and fixation, external fixation, and calcaneoplasty. Although the gold standard is the extensile lateral approach, this method has significant wound-healing complications associated with it. Literature shows that the reduction achieved through minimally invasive techniques is equal to that achieved with the extensile lateral approach, while reducing the amount of postoperative compl

INTRODUCTION: Management of body fractures in patients with edentulous atrophic mandibles represents a challenging task due to patient's age, medical comorbidities, poor bone quality, and vascularity, as well as reduced contact area between the fracture ends. The aim of the study was to assess the demographic and clinical variables, the surgical technique, and outcomes of unilateral body fractures of the edentulous atrophic mandible managed at several European departments of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
METHODS: This study is based on a systematic computer-assisted database that allowed th

BACKGROUND: Anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) has been used for treatment of a variety of spinal conditions including degenerative disc disorders and low-grade spondylolisthesis. Expected fusion rate of stand-alone ALIF constructs is currently unclear. The aim of this study was to examine the fusion rate for ALIF without supplemental posterior fusion or instrumentation (stand-alone ALIF).
METHODS: We queried the MEDLINE, COCHRANE, and EMBASE databases for all literature related to spine fusion rates using a stand-alone ALIF procedure with a publication cutoff date of July 19, 2018. Supp

Background: Distal radius fractures are among the most common fractures encountered in orthopedic practices. If treated operatively, most implants are retained after the fracture heals unless there is hardware failure, limitation of wrist motion, pain, infection, tendon rupture, or tenosynovitis. Complications have been reported during hardware removal, including not knowing the exact implant prior to its removal. If a patient presents for plate removal to a surgeon who did not perform the initial fracture fixation, having a preoperative visual aid can help the treating surgeon choose the righ

CONTEXT: Cranioplasty is a frequently performed procedure that uses a variety of reconstruction materials and techniques. In this technical note, we present refinements of computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing inlay cranioplasty.
OBJECTIVE, DESIGN, AND SETTING: In an attempt to decrease complications related to polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) cranioplasty, we gradually made changes to implant design and cranioplasty techniques. These changes include under-contouring of the implant and the use of segmented plates for large defects, microplate fixation for small temporal defects, tem

UNLABELLED: This systematic review sums up the state of knowledge about complications and reasons for failure when children with Blount disease are treated with temporary hemiepiphysiodesis. Twelve studies meet the inclusion criteria. The main reported obstacles were under correction and the poor predictability of the amount of correction that was obtainable. Obese patients with severe deformity are the most challenging groups of patients in the treatment of angular deformities. Patients with Blount disease require a careful evaluation regarding the deformity, age, body weight, and social back

BACKGROUND: Traumatic sternoclavicular joint dislocations are rare; closed reduction is the primary treatment. The failure of closed reduction or a prominent insult to the skin may require surgery to ensure the best possible outcome.
METHODS: The records of 5 patients operated at our institution for sternoclavicular joint dislocation were reviewed. All patients were treated with open reduction and single 3.5-mm locking plate was used for fixation. Outcomes were evaluated with the Constant Shoulder Score (CSS) and Disability of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) questionnaire. Intraoperative a

We compared the stability of three different titanium plate-and-screw fixation systems after Le Fort I osteotomy in polyurethane models of unilateral clefts. Thirty-six models were divided into 3 groups. In the first group, we adapted standard Plates 1mm thick with 2.0mm screws and placed them bilaterally on the zygomatic buttress and the piriform rim. In the second group, we did the same and added Plates 0.6mm thick with 1.6mm screws between the standard 2mm miniplates on both sides. In the last group, we placed Plates 1.4mm thick with 2.0mm screws bilaterally on the maxillary zygomatic buttr

Several approaches to the proximal humerus for fracture fixation are possible. The traditional utilitarian approach to the shoulder, the deltopectoral, has distinct disadvantages when performing fracture reduction and locked plating. The anterolateral acromial approach exploits the intermuscular plane between the anterior and middle heads of the deltoid. After identifying the position of the axillary nerve as it crosses this interval, fracture reduction and fixation is performed. Direct access to both the greater and the lesser tuberosities is facilitated. The cancellous surface of the humeral

INTRODUCTION: Plating of the proximal femur represents a standard fixation method in orthopedic and trauma surgery. Vascular lesions are uncommon but potentially life-threatening. With the increasing number of hip surgery also more of these complications have to be anticipated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the most common types and locations of vascular lesions after plating of the proximal femur as well as the most important causes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature research was undertaken of the English and german literature on vascular complications after plating of the prox

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a rare but potentially severe condition, and the etiopathology and risk factors are poorly defined. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons position paper on BRONJ update 2009 remarks all the risk factors of developing BRONJ. Local anatomy such as lingual tori, mylohyoid ridge or palatal tori, and areas with thin mucosa overlying bony prominences represent some of these local factors. We have recently treated a patient presenting a mandibular osteonecrosis involving a rigid miniplate which had been placed 18 years a

We report on a 40-year-old man who sustained a traumatic extracapsular fracture of the proximal femur with a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing in situ. It was decided to retain the resurfacing implant and a proximal femoral periarticular locking compression plate (Synthes) was used to stabilise the fracture. The patient regained full range of pain-free movement, and was bearing his full weight on the operated leg by 18 weeks. He had a Harris Hip score of 90. Fractures around hip resurfacing arthroplasties are an emerging problem, and a literature review reveals two distinct modes of presentation i.e.
