Association of body mass index with progression from binge-eating behavior into binge-eating disorder among adolescents in the United States: A prospective analysis of pooled data.

The association between body mass index (BMI) and binge-eating disorder (BED) is well-established. However, data on the extent to which BMI is associated with progression from binge-eating behavior into BED among adolescents are limited, which was the aim of this investigation. Participants were 9964 U.S. adolescents from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, aged 9-13 at the time of study enrollment. A computerized parent-reported assessment was used to establish adolescents' binge-eating behaviors and BED. Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for sociodemographic cova

Factor analysis of the eating disorder diagnostic scale in individuals with bipolar disorder.

PURPOSE: To examine the potential factor structure of the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (EDDS) in a sample of individuals with bipolar disorder. METHOD: Exploratory common factor analyses were conducted in a sample of 1031 people with bipolar disorder as defined by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR. RESULTS: Approximately 27% of participants had a comorbid eating disorder. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 3 factor solution (i.e., shape/weight concerns; binge eating behaviors, compensatory behavior). CONCLUSIONS: The 3-factor solution of the EDDS in a bipolar disorder s

An assessment of rapamycin for weakening binge-eating memories via reconsolidation: a pre-registered, double-blind randomised placebo-controlled experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Maladaptive learning linking environmental food cues to high-palatability food reward plays a central role in overconsumption in obesity and binge eating disorders. The process of memory reconsolidation offers a mechanism to weaken such learning, potentially ameliorating over-eating behaviour. Here we investigated whether putatively interfering with synaptic plasticity using the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor, rapamycin, could weaken retrieved chocolate reward memories through blockade of reconsolidation. METHODS: Seventy five healthy volunteers with a tendency to

Nonmedical prescription stimulant use for suppressing appetite and controlling body weight is uniquely associated with more severe eating disorder symptomatology.

OBJECTIVE: Nonmedical prescription stimulant use (NPS; i.e., use without a prescription or in ways other than prescribed) to suppress appetite or control weight appears to be associated with eating disorder (ED) symptomatology among college students. However, it remains unknown if this relationship is motive-specific and uniquely related to ED symptomatology. This research examined whether engaging in NPS specifically for appetite/weight-related purposes is associated with ED symptomatology and a unique indicator of more severe symptomatology. METHOD: A nonclinical sample of college students

The impact of bulimic syndromes, mood and anxiety disorders and their comorbidity on psychosocial impairment: what drives impairment in comorbidity?

OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between psychosocial impairment and comorbid disorders in bulimic syndromes. METHOD: Participants (N = 391; 91% women) completed structured clinical interviews to determine the presence of Axis I disorders (bulimic syndromes, anxiety disorders and mood disorders) and current psychosocial functioning. RESULTS: Individuals with a current bulimic syndrome and comorbid anxiety disorder had worse psychosocial functioning than either disorder alone. In contrast, there was no additional effect of a current bulimic syndrome in individuals with a current mood disord

Setting the eating disorder aside: an alternative model of care.

Eating disorder treatment typically involves psychotherapy, structured programmes to normalize eating behaviours, and weight restoration. Unfortunately some individuals who receive these treatments do not recover. The Community Outreach Partnership Program (COPP) was developed to address the needs of these individuals. Using a team approach which combines both community and hospital services, COPP assists clients increase their quality of life by fostering independence, increasing hope and enhancing social skills in the context of the client's economic, social and physical living environment.

Investigation of 3111T/C polymorphism of the CLOCK gene in obese individuals with or without binge eating disorder: association with higher body mass index.

Loss of circadian patterning of metabolism-related functions seems to play a role in the pathogenesis of obesity; therefore, it is reasonable to hypothesize that the functional 3111T/C single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of the (Circadian locomotor output cycles kaput) CLOCK gene may have a part in the genetic susceptibility to obesity. The aim of this study was to assess the frequencies of 3111T/C CLOCK gene SNP in overweight/obese subjects with or without binge eating disorder (BED) as compared to normal weight healthy controls. A total of 284 Caucasian subjects, including 92 normal weight

Evaluating preoperative weight loss, binge eating disorder, and sexual abuse history on Roux-en-Y gastric bypass outcome.

BACKGROUND: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass patients often undergo preoperative dieting and psychological assessment before surgery. We examined preoperative weight loss, binge eating disorder (BED), and sexual abuse history and the interactions of these predictors to determine whether a cautionary approach to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is warranted. METHODS: Consecutive subjects undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass at our institution from January 1997 to December 2002 were reviewed. The postoperative excess weight loss (EWL) at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months and the perioperative complications were me

Intervention research: establishing fidelity of the independent variable in nursing clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Internal validity of a randomized clinical trial of a nursing intervention is dependent on intervention fidelity. Although several methods have been developed, evaluating audio or audiovisual tapes for prescribed and proscribed interventionist behaviors is considered the gold standard test of treatment fidelity. This approach requires development of a psychometrically sound instrument to meaningfully categorize and quantify interventionist behaviors. OBJECTIVE: To outline critical steps necessary to develop a treatment fidelity instrument. METHODS: A comprehensive literature revi

Assessment of binge eating in overweight youth using a questionnaire version of the Child Eating Disorder Examination with Instructions.

OBJECTIVE: Existing self-report methods for assessing eating disorder (ED) symptoms in youth do not adequately measure binge eating and lack sufficient psychometric support. The Youth Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (YEDE-Q), a self-report version of the Child Eating Disorder Examination (ChEDE), was designed to assess the spectrum of ED psychopathology in youth. METHOD: The YEDE-Q was compared to the ChEDE and the Questionnaire for Eating and Weight Patterns-Adolescent version (QEWP-A) in a sample of 35 overweight adolescents aged 12-17. RESULTS: The YEDE-Q showed significant agre

Sex differences in the relation of weight loss self-efficacy, binge eating, and depressive symptoms to weight loss success in a residential obesity treatment program.

The aim of the current study was to examine whether weight loss self-efficacy, binge eating, and depressive symptoms predicted weight loss during treatment, and whether gender moderates these associations with prospective data from 297 participants (223 women and 74 men) enrolled in a residential obesity treatment program. Men reported higher initial levels of self-efficacy than women, whereas women reported greater pre-treatment levels of binge eating and depressive symptoms. Higher pre-treatment levels of weight control self-efficacy, binge eating, and depressive symptoms predicted greater w

Emotional overeating and its associations with eating disorder psychopathology among overweight patients with binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined emotional overeating in overweight patients with binge eating disorder (BED). A new measure--the Emotional Overeating Questionnaire (EOQ)--was developed to measure the frequency of overeating in response to emotions. The internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and factor structure of this measure were examined, and its associations with eating disorder psychopathology, depression, and gender were explored. METHOD: Two hundred twenty consecutive overweight (body mass index [BMI] > or = 25) treatment-seeking BED patients (48 men and 172 women) were a

Self-reported eating behaviors of extremely obese persons seeking bariatric surgery: a factor analytic approach.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the self-reported eating behaviors of persons seeking bariatric surgery and to provide reliability data for a clinical instrument that assesses those eating behaviors. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Adults (552) with extreme obesity (mean +/- standard deviation BMI = 52.4 +/- 10.1 kg/m(2)) completed the Weight and Lifestyle Inventory (WALI) before undergoing bariatric surgery. The WALI is a self-report instrument that includes 24 items that assess the eating behaviors to which respondents attribute their excess weight. These items were entered into a principal compon

Eating disorders in Japan: finding the right context.

Eating disorders have traditionally been described as a typically 'Western' illness. Cases that occur outside Western countries are often regarded as atypical. Peculiarities are thus emphasized. However, eating disorders are now prevalent in Japan, among non-Western immigrants in Europe, and in other societies. The author focuses on the universality of the background of eating disorders and looks at them as 'culture change syndromes'. Change in the family and in women's roles are the central themes. The majority of the subjects experienced very little emotional relationship with their parents

Zolpidem-induced psychosis.

Zolpidem is reported to be a safe and effective hypnotic agent for the short-term treatment of insomnia. There are several case reports of zolpidem causing psychotic reactions in patients with no history of psychosis. We report two additional cases in which zolpidem was implicated in psychotic reactions characterized by auditory and visual hallucinations as well as delusional thinking. Both patient's symptoms resolved with the discontinuation of zolpidem use. It appears that our cases share several features in common with the other reported cases. All were female, there appeared to be some dos

Using Continuous Glucose Monitoring to Passively Classify Naturalistic Binge Eating and Vomiting Among Adults With Binge-Spectrum Eating Disorders: A Preliminary Investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Binge eating and self-induced vomiting are common, transdiagnostic eating disorder (ED) symptoms. Efforts to understand these behaviors in research and clinical settings have historically relied on self-report measures, which may be biased and have limited ecological validity. It may be possible to passively detect binge eating and vomiting using data collected by continuous glucose monitors (CGMs; minimally invasive sensors that measure blood glucose levels), as these behaviors yield characteristic glucose responses. METHOD: This study developed machine learning classification alg
