Fourteen cases of meningococcal disease (MD) occurred in August September 1996 in western Sydney, Australia. Seven of the 10 young adults affected had a direct or indirect link with a local nightclub. Ten of 11 systemic meningococcal isolates had the phenotype C:2a:P1.5 and showed close genetic relationship by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The gastric surface epithelium of 101 antrum biopsies was examined by the AgNOR-technique. The material included normal mucosa, Helicobacter pylori gastritis, gastric ulcer, intestinal metaplasia type I and type III, dysplasia grades I-III and carcinoma. Type I oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is produced by mutations of the tyrosinase gene. We report four new missense mutations in the tyrosinase gene in patients with type IA OCA. Three of these mutations occur within exon I and the fourth mutation within exon IV. Analysis of the distribution of these four missense mutations and 12 previously reported missense mutations shows that most cluster in four areas of the gene. The COVID-19 pandemic devastated nursing homes, highlighting the urgent need for effective outbreak control measures.
