Humanitarian Activities of Interplast Turkiye: 6 Years of Experience in Uzbekistan for Surgical Treatment of Cleft Patients and Related Secondary Deformities.

Cleft lip and palate (CL/P) is one of the leading congenital deformities among the world. Children born with CL/P experience problems with feeding, speech, hearing, and dentition. In developed countries, CL/P patients are receiving optimal health care involving multidisciplinary team approach and staged surgical operations, whereas in developing countries, there is severe shortage of both medical and financial sources. To overcome these limitations, humanitarian surgical missions are essential. The aim of this article is to share our experience of humanitarian surgical mission in Uzbekistan co…

The relationship between parity and overweight varies with household wealth and national development.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies support a positive relationship between parity and overweight among women of developing countries; however, it is unclear whether these effects vary by household wealth and national development. Our objective was to determine whether the association between parity and overweight [body mass index (BMI) > or =25 kg/m(2)] in women living in developing countries varies with levels of national human development and/or household wealth. METHODS: We used data from 28 nationally representative, cross-sectional surveys conducted between 1996 and 2003 (n = 275 704 women, 15-4…

Gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea is a major sexually transmitted disease (STD) that occurs worldwide. The prevalence has fallen dramatically in most industrialized countries in the last ten years because of effective therapy, contact tracing, and changes in sexual practices since the advent of the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). In contrast, in developing countries the prevalence is high or increasing as a result of both the lack of facilities for diagnosis and of suitable antimicrobial therapy.

Reducing the Burden of Anemia and Neural Tube Defects in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: An Analysis to Identify Countries with an Immediate Potential to Benefit from Large-Scale Mandatory Fortification of Wheat Flour and Rice.

Using a predetermined set of criteria, including burden of anemia and neural tube defects (NTDs) and an enabling environment for large-scale fortification, this paper identifies 18 low- and middle-income countries with the highest and most immediate potential for large-scale wheat flour and/or rice fortification in terms of health impact and economic benefit. Adequately fortified staples, delivered at estimated coverage rates in these countries, have the potential to avert 72.1 million cases of anemia among non-pregnant women of reproductive age; 51,636 live births associated with folic acid-p

Early childhood exposure to non-violent discipline and physical and psychological aggression in low- and middle-income countries: National, regional, and global prevalence estimates.

BACKGROUND: Advocates for children's rights have recommended the elimination of all forms of violent discipline given its detrimental effects on children's development. Yet, little is known about the global prevalence of various forms of discipline, including physical and psychological aggression, as well as alternative forms of non-violent discipline, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). OBJECTIVE: This study aims to obtain national, regional, and global prevalence estimates of the percentage and number of 2- to- 4-y-olds in LMICs exposed to these disciplinary practices by

Fluoride availability from natural resources in The Gambia--implications for oral health care.

INTRODUCTION: Changing food patterns in combination with ineffective oral hygiene measures and insufficient bioavailability of fluoride from drinking water and other sources seem to impair the dental health status in developing countries, especially in the younger population. Therefore, preventive programmes in controlling dental caries progression should be based on local conditions. METHODS: For mapping the drinking water fluoride content throughout The Gambia, samples of water from rural community wells, public water taps, commercial mineral water, and from the Gambia-River were measured. …

The role of HIV infection in acute respiratory infections among children in sub-Saharan Africa.

Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are responsible for 1.9 million deaths annually, or 20% of the total worldwide under 5-year mortality rate. Developing countries carry the major burden of these deaths. In sub-Saharan Africa, human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) plays a significant role in this high mortality rate. The clinical and radiological features of ARI in HIV-infected and non-infected children are similar, with few exceptions. Epidemiological mapping of aetiological agents is essential to develop standard case management guidelines. The role of newer cytokines (e.g., procalcito…

Micronutrient malnutrition, infection, and immunity: an overview.

Micronutrient deficiencies and infectious diseases often coexist and exhibit complex interactions leading to the vicious cycle of malnutrition and infections among underprivileged populations of the developing countries, particularly in preschool children. Several micronutrients such as vitamin A, beta-carotene, folic acid, vitamin B12 vitamin C, riboflavin, iron, zinc, and selenium, have immunomodulating functions and thus influence the susceptibility of a host to infectious diseases and the course and outcome of such diseases. Certain of these micronutrients also possess antioxidant function…

Low birthweight babies in the Third World: maternal nursing versus professional nursing care.

Severe nursing shortage adds to the high mortality of low birthweight babies in developing countries. To study the efficacy of maternal nursing care we conducted a prospective matched case-control study. Outcome was compared in low birthweight babies nursed by mothers (mothers' group, n = 151, cases), versus professional nurses (nurses' group, n = 211, controls). Irrespective of condition on admission, weight gain was significantly higher (p < 0.001) and overall mortality rate significantly lower (p < 0.001) in the mothers' group. Mortality was also lower in the mothers' group for babies with …

Nasopharyngeal oxygen in children.

Hypoxia caused by pneumonia or bronchiolitis is a common cause of death in children in developing countries. Oxygen is very expensive in developing countries, and it is important that the limited supplies available be used as efficiently as possible. This study evaluated the administration of oxygen through an 8 FG catheter inserted into the nose to a depth equal to the distance from the side of the nose to the front of the ear, so that the tip of the catheter was just visible in the pharynx below the soft palate. A flow rate of 150 ml/kg/min gave an inspired oxygen concentration of about 50% …

Thermal Inactivation of Hepatitis E Virus: A Narrative Review.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is an emerging infectious disease. HEV-1 and HEV-2 infect humans through contaminated water and foods, mainly in developing countries. HEV-3 and HEV-4 also infect humans through contaminated food and are thought to be zoonotic infections occurring in both developing and developed countries. A vaccine for hepatitis E is licensed in only limited countries. The inactivation of infectious HEV is very important to ensure the safety of drinking water and foods. HEV-3 and HEV-4 RNA have been detected in some pig liver products, and it is possible that these foods may…

Revisiting Asian chronic rhinosinusitis in the era of type 2 biologics.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a highly heterogeneous disorder exhibiting considerable epidemiological, clinical and immunopathological variations across patients with distinct ethnic backgrounds and in different geographic locations. Asian CRS patients present less eosinophilic and type 2 (T2) inflammation, but more prominent neutrophilic inflammation compared with patients in Western countries. Although several biologics targeting important elements of T2 inflammation, such as IL-4, IL-5, IL-13 and IgE, demonstrate promising benefit for Caucasian patients with recurrent nasal polyps, their

Lessons Learned from Protective Immune Responses to Optimize Vaccines against Cryptosporidiosis.

In developing countries, cryptosporidiosis causes moderate-to-severe diarrhea and kills thousands of infants and toddlers annually. Drinking and recreational water contaminated with Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts has led to waterborne outbreaks in developed countries. A competent immune system is necessary to clear this parasitic infection. A better understanding of the immune responses required to prevent or limit infection by this protozoan parasite is the cornerstone of development of an effective vaccine. In this light, lessons learned from previously developed vaccines against Cryptosporidi…

A population-based study of visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) for cervical screening in rural Nigeria.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer is the most common gynecological cancer in developing countries. Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) was introduced to screen for cervical premalignant lesions in developing countries owing to the inability of many countries to implement high-quality cytologic services. We sought to compare VIA performance among different health workers in Nigeria. METHODS: In a population-based project, 7 health workers who had been screening women with VIA for approximately 2 years at local government health centers in rural Nigeria were retrained in a 2-week program using th…

Thrombocytosis and small bowel perforation: unusual presentation of abdominopelvic actinomycosis.

Intrauterine devices (IUD) are frequently used as a family planning procedure in developing countries because they are easy to administer and governmental policies support their use in many countries. It is recommended that IUDs be removed or replaced after 10 years, but longer use is common, especially in developing countries. In some cases, rare infections such as pelvic inflammatory diseases, pelvic tuberculosis, or abdominopelvic actinomycosis related to IUD can develop. Pelvic actinomycosis is a rare disease and is often diagnosed incidentally during surgery. In recent years, there has be…

High incidence of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease in the republics of Central Asia.

The epidemiological situation involving rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) not only remains unresolved but is also a cause of serious concern due to the rapid increase in the incidence of RF/RHD in many developing countries. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the republics of Central Asia experienced an economic decline that directly affected the public health sector of this region. This is the main cause of the high prevalence of many infectious diseases in Central Asia, including streptococcal tonsillopharyngitis, which carries the risk of complications such as RF. T…
