PURPOSE: To evaluate excimer laser-assisted anterior lamellar keratoplasty to augment thin corneas as in keratoconus (<350 microm) and corneal ectasia after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and to treat anterior stromal opacities.

BACKGROUND: Corneal ectasia after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) has only been occasionally reported, and its incidence has not been assessed.
METHODS: In a retrospective, non-comparative case series, incidence of corneal ectasia was evaluated in a personal consecutive 6453-case series of myopic PRK with a minimum follow-up of 18 months. BACKGROUND: A 60-year-old man with a history of atherosclerotic disease of the carotid and coronary vasculature presented with lower back pain and acute renal failure. Imaging studies revealed bilateral ureteral obstruction by a large retroperitoneal mass.

The object was to assess the incidence of complications in patients who had undergone the tension-free vaginal tape procedure and their management. A total of 274 women 28-80 years old (mean: 55.1) with a minimum follow-up of 6 months were included in the study. We report a 62-year-old woman with a locked-in syndrome with bilateral masticatory spasms and persistent trismus, who was still able to yawn. A vascular malformation of the basilar artery-megadolichobasilar artery (fusiform aneurysm, vertebrobasilar dolichoectasia) was determined to be the underlying cause of this rare combination of symptoms. Isolated dissecting aneurysms of the posterior cerebral artery are not as rare as previously reported. Affecting primarily a younger population, this condition can be recognized by angiographic patterns, the most common being a "pearl and string" morphology. Marfan syndrome is an autosomal dominant heritable disorder of fibrous connective tissue due to mutation in the fibrillin-1 gene, located on chromosome 15. Early mortality from Marfan syndrome results from aortic dilatation. Recently the ureter has been used for bladder augmentation in selected patients with abnormal bladders and dilated upper tracts. The ureter has several advantages over other forms of bladder augmentation because it alleviates electrolyte disturbances, mucous production, and the disruption of the gastrointestinal tract. Initial reports emphasized the use of the entire ureter and renal pelvis in patients with an ipsilateral dilated nonfunctioning renal unit. Herein the authors report five cases of ureterocystoplasties performed since July 1993, in which the ipsilateral renal unit was preserved.
