Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Developed from the Parotid Gland to the Ear Lobe of a Young Woman.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a relatively rare malignant tumor. It is more common in women than in men and typically develops in the lacrimal, salivary, and breast glands. ACC of the external auditory canal (EAC) is exceedingly rare, and its invasion into the ear lobe is even more unusual. In this report, we present a case of ACC that presented as a mass on the surface of the ear lobe in a 28-year-old woman and was initially diagnosed as infected atheroma. For wide resection of the tumor, half of the entire auricula was resected and superficial parotidectomy was performed. After confirmin…

Inhibition of hypertrophic scar formation with oral asiaticoside treatment in a rabbit ear scar model.

Hypertrophic scar (HS) is a fibrotic skin disease characterised by over-productive collagen and excessive inflammatory reaction, which can be functionally and cosmetically problematic. A scar-prone constitute will accelerate HS formation and functional disorder, which deserves systemic therapy with oral medicine. To examine the oral therapeutic effectiveness on HS with convincing evidence of gross view and histological improvement, a rabbit ear HS model was employed with oral administration of asiaticoside (AS) at the doses of 12 and 24 mg kg-1  d-1 daily for 60 consecutive days. Gross observa…

Tacrolimus action pathways in an ointment base for hypertrophic scar prevention in a rabbit ear model.

BACKGROUND: Tacrolimus is used to prevent unaesthetic scars due to its action on fibroblast activity and collagen production modulation. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the action pathways, from the histopathological point of view and in cytokine control, of tacrolimus ointment in the prevention of hypertrophic scars. METHODS: Twenty-two rabbits were submitted to the excision of two 1-cm fragments in each ear, including the perichondrium. The right ear received 0.1% and 0.03% tacrolimus in ointment base twice a day in the upper wound and in the lower wound respectively. The left ear, used as the con…

External ears for non-invasive and stable monitoring of volatile organic compounds in human blood.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released through skin (transcutaneous gas) has been increasing in importance for the continuous and real-time assessment of diseases or metabolisms. For stable monitoring of transcutaneous gas, finding a body part with little interference on the measurement is essential. In this study, we have investigated the possibility of external ears for stable and real-time measurement of ethanol vapour by developing a monitoring system that consisted with an over-ear gas collection cell and a biochemical gas sensor (bio-sniffer). The high sensitivity with the broad dyna…

Forward and Reverse Middle Ear Transmission in Gerbil with a Normal or Spontaneously Healed Tympanic Membrane.

Tympanic membranes (TM) that have healed spontaneously after perforation present abnormalities in their structural and mechanical properties; i.e., they are thickened and abnormally dense. These changes result in a deterioration of middle ear (ME) sound transmission, which is clinically presented as a conductive hearing loss (CHL). To fully understand the ME sound transmission under TM pathological conditions, we created a gerbil model with a controlled 50% pars tensa perforation, which was left to heal spontaneously for up to 4 weeks (TM perforations had fully sealed after 2 weeks). After the…

RNA Extraction from Ears and Draining Lymph Nodes of Mice Infected with Leishmania amazonensis.

Parasites of the genus Leishmania infect the mammalian hosts, including mice and humans and cause cutaneous or visceral leishmaniasis depending upon the parasite species transmitted by the vector sandfly. Leishmania amazonensis is one of the Leishmania species responsible for the cutaneous form of the disease. We have inoculated with these parasites the ear dermis of mice. RNA preparations were performed from fragmented tissues using a buffer containing guanidin isothiocynate (RLT buffer, RNeasy Mini Kit, Qiagen, SAS, France) and β-mercaptoethanol. Both reagents facilitate the isolation of int…

Uncovering the secreted signals and transcription factors regulating the development of mammalian middle ear ossicles.

The mammalian middle ear comprises a chain of ossicles, the malleus, incus, and stapes that act as an impedance matching device during the transmission of sound from the tympanic membrane to the inner ear. These ossicles are derived from cranial neural crest cells that undergo endochondral ossification and subsequently differentiate into their final functional forms. Defects that occur during middle ear development can result in conductive hearing loss. In this review, we summarize studies describing the crucial roles played by signaling molecules such as sonic hedgehog, bone morphogenetic pro…

Nonoperative Molding of Congenital Ear Deformities: The Impact of Birth-Initiation Delay on Correction Outcome.

Ear molding can improve the majority congenital ear deformities when employed early after birth. However, the best time to initiate treatment remains debated. In describing one surgeon's experience over the past near decade, this study aims to highlight differences conferred by treatment timing. The authors hypothesize that auricular outcomes are superior when deformities are molded beginning in the first 3 weeks of life. A retrospective review (2010-2018) of 272 cases was performed to compare early initiation of molding (<3 weeks of birth) and delayed initiation (>3 weeks). The mean patient a…

Gene expression profile analysis on different stages of hypertrophic scarring in a rabbit ear model.

Hypertrophic scarring (HS) is one of the most common skin disorders. The study aimed to investigate the gene expression profile at day 10 (Stage 1), 21 (Stage 2), and day 40 (Stage 3) post-wounding of HS using RNA-sequencing of a scar model from rabbit ears. A total of 17,386 unigenes were annotated using the eggNOG Functional Category database. The study identified significantly differentially expressed genes (DEGs) including 261, 141, and 247 upregulated ones as well as 253, 272, and 58 downregulated ones in three stages respectively. The DEGs varies among each stage measured by Gene Ontolog…
