Anconeus Muscle Transfer to Correct or Prevent Wrist Radial Deviation in Radial and Posterior Interosseous Nerve Injuries.

PURPOSE: Wrist radial deviation is a possible complication of tendon transfer for restoration of wrist extension in cases of radial nerve paralysis. In posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) injury, this is because of the imbalance caused by the intact extensor carpi radialis longus and paralysis of the extensor carpi ulnaris (ECU). This deformity may also occur following transfer of the pronator teres (PT) to the extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) for radial nerve palsy. To address wrist radial deviation, we propose transferring the anconeus muscle, extended by the intermuscular septum between

Effects of exosomes from mesenchymal stem cells on functional recovery of a patient with total radial nerve injury: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury can result in significant clinical complications that have uncertain prognoses. Currently, there is a lack of effective pharmacological interventions for nerve damage, despite the existence of several small compounds, peptides, hormones, and growth factors that have been suggested as potential enhancers of neuron regeneration. Despite the objective of achieving full functional restoration by surgical intervention, the persistent challenge of inadequate functional recovery remains a significant concern in the context of peripheral nerve injuries. AIM: To exa

Single-Leg Squat and Upper Extremity Kinetics during Windmill Softball Pitching.

The high volume of pitches in softball generates substantial shoulder forces, making it a common injury site. Effective proximal-to-distal energy transfer through the lower extremities and lumbopelvic-hip complex is critical for force distribution, although this relationship has not been well examined in youth. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between single-leg squat compensatory mechanics and upper extremity kinetics in youth softball pitchers. A total of 72 youth softball pitchers participated. Participants performed isometric hip strength testing, bilateral single-l

Effects of Cadence Control on Upper-Limb Kinematics and Muscle Activation During Manual Wheelchair Propulsion in Individuals with Spinal Cord Injury.

Manual wheelchair propulsion is a frequent activity among people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and is linked to upper limb loading and shoulder pain. We compared propulsion strategies at cadences of 30 and 50 bpm. Kinematics and surface electromyography (EMG) were recorded across the propulsion cycle, push/recovery phases, and events. Ranges of motion for shoulder flexion/extension, adduction/abduction, and elbow flexion/extension did not differ significantly, although ROM tended to be smaller at 50 bpm; push angle was larger at 50 bpm but not significant. Propulsion cycle duration was shorter

4D-printed multifunctional hydrogels as flexible strain sensors and nerve conduits.

Conductive hydrogels are critical for advanced bioelectronics and the repair of electroactive tissues. However, developing conductive hydrogels into complex biomimetic shapes with good flexibility and bioactivity poses a major biofabrication challenge. This study utilizes dual-component hydrogel inks based on alginate incorporating conductive fCNT (acid-functionalized carbon nanotube) nanofillers, with the composite gel exhibiting an electrical conductivity of 6.6 ± 0.5 mS cm-1 at 2 mg ml-1 fCNT loading. Owing to their good combination of electrical conductivity and mechanical properties, the

Nerve Grafting and Nerve Transfer in Incomplete Brachial Plexus Birth Injury: A Systematic Review.

Background: Primary neuroma excision and autografting are the gold-standard surgical treatments for brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI). With the rising popularity of distal nerve transfers, it is more frequently utilised to manage BPBI. However, distal transfers for BPBI remain under investigation. We reviewed the updated evidence for nerve transfers compared to nerve grafting as a primary approach for shoulder and elbow reconstruction in Narakas I and II neonatal brachial plexus palsy. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed according to the PRISMA guidelines. PubMed and

Ultrasonographic study for optimal volar needle approach technique for the pronator quadratus to avoid anterior interosseous nerve injury.

We visualized the entry point (EP) of the anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) into the pronator quadratus (PQ) in the distal forearm with ultrasonography and examined its location to identify the safe zone for approaching the PQ on the volar side. The forearms of healthy volunteers without any musculoskeletal problems of the upper extremities were examined. Using high-resolution ultrasonography, the volar aspects of the forearms were scanned with elbows flexed at 90°. Using the images obtained, several parameters for distance were measured. Overall, 20 forearms were examined. The means ± standar

The Crossing Motor Ulnar Nerve Branch at Elbow.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cubital tunnel syndrome is the second most common nerve entrapment, and understanding the anatomy is crucial for the success of the nerve release. During ulnar nerve release for cubital tunnel syndrome, a motor branch is frequently encountered crossing anteriorly over the ulnar nerve from its medial/ulnar side proximally to the lateral/radial side distally. Little has been noted about this crossing branch in the literature. In this anatomic study, we sought to characterize this branch further and discuss its potential significance in cubital tunnel release. METHODS:

Scalable and Multifunctional Polyurethane/MXene/Carbon Nanotube-Based Fabric Sensor toward Baby Healthcare.

Continuous monitoring of physiological health status and effective protection against external hazards is an indispensable aspect of healthcare management for critically vulnerable populations, particularly for infants or babies. So, the exploration of all-in-one devices remains critical to avoiding their injury and illness. The integration of multiple properties such as sensing, electromagnetic protection, warming/cooling, and water/bacterial repellence into a common fabric is no doubt a promising solution to coping with diverse application scenarios. However, achieving simultaneous integrati

The Contribution of the Distal Oblique Band to Distal Radioulnar Joint Stability.

PURPOSE: The distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) is supported by an array of dynamic and static stabilizers, of which the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) is the most important, and the distal interosseous ligament is next in importance. The distal oblique band (DOB) is an identifiable component of the distal interosseous ligament, found in a subset of the population. Our objective was to determine the contribution of the DOB to DRUJ stability in the presence of a disrupted TFCC. METHODS: Twenty-three above-elbow specimens were prepared by removing the TFCC and the DRUJ joint capsule, pres

Recurrent Infections After Percutaneous Pinning of a Proximal Radius and Ulna Fracture.

Elbow fractures in the pediatric population are an exceedingly common injury, comprising 5% to 10% of all pediatric fractures, with supracondylar fractures being the most common of the subset. Radial neck fractures are less frequent, comprising only 1% of all pediatric fractures. We provide a case report of a 7-year-old girl with a left radial neck and proximal ulna fracture. A 7-year-old girl presented to the emergency department after falling off a rock wall the day before. Imaging showed a left proximal ulna and proximal radial neck fracture. The patient underwent percutaneous reduction and

Anteromedial coronoid facet fractures and associated ligament lesions: A case series.

INTRODUCTION: Varus posteromedial rotational injury mechanisms lead to fractures of the coronoids process' anteromedial facet. As these fractures are often unstable, rapid fracture treatment is vital to prevent progressive osteoarthritis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve patients with a fracture of the anteromedial facet treated surgically were enrolled in the study. Computed tomography images were used to classify the fractures according to the system by O'Driscoll et al. Clinical follow-up included each patient's medical record, surgical treatment algorithm, all complications encountered durin
