Adolescent Reproductive Health Care: Views and Practices of Pediatric Hospitalists.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many hospitalized adolescents are at increased risk for pregnancy complications due to an underlying medical condition, however sexual risk assessment is not consistently performed in this setting. While adolescents and their parents are supportive of sexual health discussion in the inpatient setting, a thorough understanding of factors that influence provision of this care among pediatric hospital physicians is lacking. This formative information is needed to facilitate efforts to improve and standardize clinical care provision. Our objective is to assess the freque

Patient capacity for self-care in the medical record of patients with chronic conditions: a mixed-methods retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic conditions must mobilize capacity to access and use healthcare and enact self-care. In order for clinicians to create feasible treatment plans with patients, they must appreciate the limits and possibilities of patient capacity. This study seeks to characterize the amount, nature, and comprehensiveness of the information about patient capacity documented in the medical record. METHODS: In this mixed-methods study, we extracted notes about 6 capacity domains from the medical records of 100 patients receiving care from 15 primary care clinicians at a single pra

Service readiness for inpatient care of small and sick newborns: what do we need and what can we measure now?

BACKGROUND: Each year an estimated 2.6 million newborns die, mainly from complications of prematurity, neonatal infections, and intrapartum events. Reducing these deaths requires high coverage of good quality care at birth, and inpatient care for small and sick newborns. In low- and middle-income countries, standardised measurement of the readiness of facilities to provide emergency obstetric care has improved tracking of readiness to provide care at birth in recent years. However, the focus has been mainly on obstetric care; service readiness for providing inpatient care of small and sick new

Investigating the job satisfaction of healthcare providers at primary healthcare centres in Lebanon: A national cross-sectional study.

Low job satisfaction is linked to higher staff turnover and intensified shortages in healthcare providers (HCP). This study investigates the level of, and factors associated with, HCP job satisfaction in the national primary healthcare (PHC) network in Lebanon. The study adopts a cross-sectional design to survey HCP at 99 PHC centres distributed across the country between October 2013 and May 2014. The study questionnaire consisted of four sections: socio-demographics/professional background, employment characteristics, level of job satisfaction (Measure of Job Satisfaction scale) and level of

The Health Burden of Invasive Meningococcal Disease: A Systematic Review.

OF KEY POINTS: Although relatively rare, invasive meningococcal disease continues to be a health concern, especially in young children. This systematic review clearly delineates both the near- and long-term morbidities that can occur after, and persist beyond, the period of acute illness. BACKGROUND: Although rare, invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) continues to be a health concern in high-income countries because of its severe morbidity and relatively high case fatality rate, especially in young children. However, studies measuring sequelae of IMD across the spectrum of invasive syndromes

Children. The unwitting target of environmental injustices.

Children have little control over where they live, what they eat, the financial circumstances of their families, or the developmental activities and behaviors that make them vulnerable to environmental contaminants. Minority and poor families disproportionately live in communities with landfills, hazardous waste facilities, incinerators, industrial plants, and old housing with poor indoor air quality and lead-based paint. Residents of these communities are also more likely than are more affluent communities to consume fish on a regular basis from local waters, many of which have banned fishing

Latent profiles of oral health-related quality of life in temporomandibular disorders: implications for nurse-led stratified care.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are common chronic orofacial pain conditions that substantially impair oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The multidimensional burden of TMD, involving pain, functional limitation, psychological distress, and maladaptive behaviors, is highly heterogeneous. However, nursing practice lacks empirically derived frameworks that support early risk stratification and profile-informed, nurse-led care. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in a tertiary TMD specialty clinic between February 2024 and August 2025. A total of 515 adults

In-hospital antimicrobial use and multidrug-resistant infections among COVID-19 patients in Northern Malaysia (COVAM): a multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, empirical antimicrobials were frequently prescribed despite low documented rates of bacterial and fungal co-infections. While early pandemic data exist, evidence evaluating antimicrobial consumption and multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) dynamics during subsequent pandemic surges remains limited. This study evaluated antimicrobial receipt, associated factors, and the prevalence of MDROs among hospitalised COVID-19 patients in Northern Malaysia. METHODS: This multicentre retrospective observational cohort study included adults (≥18 years) with confirm

The influence of contralesional brain age gradients on chronic stroke aphasia severity and treatment response.

The adult brain follows normative aging trajectories, yet stroke abruptly disrupts this process. Beyond the focal lesion, undamaged regions can deviate from expected aging due to diaschisis or pre-existing vulnerabilities, reflecting tissue health that may constrain recovery. Chronic post-stroke aphasia, a persistent language disorder, shows wide individual variability in severity and treatment response, and these differences are not fully captured by lesion characteristics or demographic factors. Further, prior imaging biomarkers have been difficult to scale because they rely on specialized a

From licensure to residency: structural barriers and policy options in Israel's residency admission process.

BACKGROUND: Israel faces a growing need for medical professionals due to population growth and aging, yet the number of licensed physicians per capita remains below the OECD average. The gap is particularly evident in the number of medical specialists. One factor contributing to this shortage may be the delay between medical licensure and the commencement of residency training. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the extent to which delays in the commencement of residency programs occur, to identify and analyze barriers that delay the start of residency training among newly l
