Cardiac diseases in great apes are frequently diagnosed late in their life or at postmortem. Echocardiography allows early detection and diagnosis of heart diseases in great apes. Between January 2018 and October 2019, Mandai Wildlife Group (MWG) conducted health evaluations on 22 captive orangutans, including 10 Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus), eight Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii), and four hybrid orangutans (Pongo spp.). Fourteen male and eight female orangutans were evaluated. Cardiac assessment was conducted in partnership with the Great Ape Heart Project (GAHP). Subjects were anes

Secondary hyperparathyroidism in heart failure is a consequence of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone activation, chronic hyperaldosteronism, and loop diuretic usage, resulting in calcium excretion. The result is an inflammatory state with adverse effects on myocardial remodeling and systemic complications. Recent literature has suggested that elevated parathyroid hormone predicts adverse outcomes in patients with heart failure independent of serum calcium and phosphate, vitamin D deficiency, and renal insufficiency. Parathyroid hormone has been correlated with elevated brain natriuretic peptide le

Mechanical forces continuously provide feedback to heart valve morphogenetic programs. In zebrafish, cardiac valve development relies on heart contraction and physical stimuli generated by the beating heart. Intracardiac hemodynamics, driven by blood flow, emerge as fundamental information shaping the development of the embryonic heart. Here, we describe an effective method to manipulate mechanical forces in vivo by grafting a 30 µm to 60 µm diameter magnetic bead in the cardiac lumen. The insertion of the bead is conducted through microsurgery in anesthetized larvae without perturbing heart f

INTRODUCTION: Primary heart involvement in systemic sclerosis may cause morpho-functional and electrical cardiac abnormalities and is a common cause of death. The absence of a clear definition of primary heart involvement in systemic sclerosis limits our understanding and ability to focus on clinical research. We aimed to create an expert consensus definition for primary heart involvement in systemic sclerosis.
METHODS: A systematic literature review of cardiac involvement and manifestations in systemic sclerosis was conducted to inform an international and multi-disciplinary task force. In a

Heart involvement in sarcoidosis is diagnosed in vivo in 5-7%, at autopsy in 25% of cases as a manifestation of a systemic process and an isolated one. Difficulties in the diagnosis of isolated sarcoidosis are due to the absence of known causes of the disease and to the lack of specificity of clinical manifestations. The main symptoms include cardiac conduction and rhythm disturbances, cardiomyopathy with the development of heart failure, as well as pericardial involvement. Routine techniques (ECG, EchoCG, daily ECG monitoring) and imaging of the structures of the heart and its function evalua

Arrhythmias originating from the specialised cardiac conduction system and papillary muscles can occur in both structurally normal and diseased hearts. Conduction system associated arrhythmias include bundle branch re-entry, fascicular re-entry, non-re-entrant fascicular ventricular tachycardia and idiopathic ventricular fibrillation. Each type of arrhythmia requires a unique diagnostic and therapeutic approach. The papillary muscles may also be a source of ventricular arrhythmias. Ablation of papillary muscle associated arrhythmias may be difficult due to the complexities of mapping, structur

The effects of propionyl-L-carnitine (PCAL) on caudal motor nerve conduction velocity, the coefficient of variation of the R-R interval on the electrocardiogram, and sciatic nerve blood flow were compared with those of [5-(3-thienyl)tetrazol-1-yl] acetic acid monohydrate, an aldose reductase inhibitor, in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. Diabetic control rats showed significantly delayed nerve conduction (P < .05), decreased R-R variability (P < .05) and reduced sciatic nerve blood flow (P < .05). Oral administration of PCAL (0.5 g/kg/day) and [5-(3-thienyl)tetrazol-1-yl] acetic acid

The evolution of the circulatory system from invertebrates to mammals has involved the passage from an open system to a closed in-parallel system via a closed in-series system, accompanying the increasing complexity and efficiency of life's biological functions. The archaic heart enables pulsatile motion waves of hemolymph in invertebrates, and the in-series circulation in fish occurs with only an endothelium, whereas mural smooth muscle cells appear later. The present review focuses on evolution of the circulatory system. In particular, we address how and why this evolution took place from a

Hypertension and obesity are risk factors for coronary heart diseases in adults. In turn, childhood overweight and high blood pressure increase the risk of subsequent obesity and hypertension in adulthood. Human obesity is characterized by profound alterations of hemodynamic and metabolic states. Whether these alterations involve sympathetic nervous system control on cardiac function is controversial. We report the results of our study, conducted in a sample of obese adolescents by using power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. An increase in sympathetic tone coupled with a reduction

BACKGROUND: Postinfarction ventricular tachycardia (VT) typically involves the left ventricular endocardium. Right ventricular involvement in the arrhythmogenic substrate of postinfarction VT is considered unusual.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the role of right ventricular mapping and ablation in patients with prior septal myocardial infarction.
METHODS: From among 37 consecutive patients with recurrent postinfarction VT, 18 patients with evidence of left ventricular septal involvement of myocardial infarction were identified; these patients were the subjects of this report. In these 18 patients, 16

BACKGROUND: Resynchronization pacing is an effective symptomatic treatment for heart failure patients with prolongation of the QRS duration (QRSd). Dyssynchronous contraction of the left ventricle is also observed with normal QRSd. We set out to determine how electrical activation of the left ventricular (LV) free wall differed between patients with left bundle-branch block (LBBB) and normal QRSd and if synchrony improved during pacing in patients with normal QRSd.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty-two patients were implanted with resynchronization pacemakers, 13 with LBBB (mean QRS, 171 ms) and 9

BACKGROUND: Ischaemic stroke is frequently associated with electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities, including repolarisation disturbances. These disturbances, often seen as prolonged QT intervals or altered T-wave morphology, reflect impaired ventricular repolarisation and have been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular events. One specific marker, the frontal QRS-T angle (FQRS-T angle), which measures the relationship between the QRS complex and T wave, has gained attention as a potential prognostic indicator in cardiovascular diseases. However, its role in ischaemic stroke has been

BACKGROUND: Enhanced characterization of the atrial electrical substrate may lead to better comprehension of atrial fibrillation (AF) pathophysiology.
OBJECTIVE: With the use of high-density substrate mapping, we sought to investigate the occurrence of functional electrophysiological phenomena in the left atrium and to assess potential association with arrhythmia recurrences after catheter ablation.
METHODS: Sixty-three consecutive patients with AF referred for ablation were enrolled. Analysis of conduction abnormalities relied on two acquired left atrial electroanatomic maps (sinus and atri

BACKGROUND: QRS complex shortening by cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has been associated with improved outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that the absence of QRS duration (QRSd) prolongation by right ventricular mid-septal pacing (RVP) may indicate complete left bundle branch block (cLBBB).
METHODS: We prospectively collected 12-lead surface electrocardiograms (ECGs) and intracardiac electrograms during CRT implant procedures. Digital recordings were edited and manually measured. The outcome measure was a change in QRSd induced by CRT (delta CRT). Several outcome predictors were i

BACKGROUND: Amodiaquine is a 4-aminoquinoline antimalarial similar to chloroquine that is used extensively for the treatment and prevention of malaria. Data on the cardiovascular effects of amodiaquine are scarce, although transient effects on cardiac electrophysiology (electrocardiographic QT interval prolongation and sinus bradycardia) have been observed. We conducted an individual patient data meta-analysis to characterise the cardiovascular effects of amodiaquine and thereby support development of risk minimisation measures to improve the safety of this important antimalarial.
