Visual language and handwriting movement: functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3 tesla during generation of ideographic characters.

A functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment at 3 tesla was performed to investigate the collaborative mechanism between visuospatial processing and motor execution in performing visual language generation tasks. Japanese Kanji, ideographic characters, were utilized to design tasks. The bilateral border portions between the inferior parietal lobule and the occipital lobe were involved during a Kanji puzzle task, which required subjects to combine several parts into a Kanji. The higher motor areas, such as the premotor areas and the pre-supplementary motor areas, were also activated bilat…

Contextual probability evaluation in autistic, receptive developmental language disorder, and control children: event-related brain potential evidence.

Compared 8- to 14-year-old children with either autism or receptive developmental language disorder (RDLD) to age- and IQ-matched normal controls in their ability to detect both frequent (p = .70) and infrequent (p = .30) randomly presented auditory stimuli under task and no-task conditions. Event-related brain potentials (ERPs), behavioral reaction times, and target detection accuracy rates were measured. Although the three groups of children performed in a similar manner on behavioral measures, only the children with autism demonstrated an abnormally small amplitude of the P3b, a component o…

Feasibility and Safety of Transcranial Focused Ultrasound on Language Impairment in a Patient with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is defined by persistent difficulties with social communication and language, and a subset of children stay minimally verbal despite intensive interventions. The left amygdala and ventral-anterior superior temporal sulcus (STSva) form a key circuit for social-language integration, but how transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) might modulate in minimally verbal ASD has not been explored. CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old minimally verbal ASD boy received 4 weeks of sequential tFUS stimulation (0.5 MHz). The treatment targeted the left amygdala and ST…

Effects of language of test administration as a predictor of progression to Alzheimer's disease in bilingual Hispanic Americans: A pilot study.

This pilot study investigated whether language of test administration (English versus Spanish) influences story recall sensitivity for early detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Hispanic Americans. Participants included 18 progressors who were initially cognitively normal or had mild cognitive impairment but later diagnosed with AD, and 27 healthy controls who were cognitively stable for at least two years. During annual neuropsychological evaluations, participants completed the Logical Memory Test in English or Spanish. Immediate and delayed recall for Story A were assessed via whole stor…

Psychosis in the Age of Large Language Models (LLMs): A Narrative Review of the Proposed Construct of AI-Induced Psychosis.

The rapid integration of AI chatbots powered by large language models (LLMs) into daily life has been accompanied by reports of psychosis-like presentations following intensive human-AI interaction, a phenomenon we provisionally label AI-induced psychosis as a working construct rather than a validated clinical entity. This hypothesis-generating narrative review synthesizes case reports from media accounts, court documents, and a recently published case compilation, together with theoretical frameworks from clinical psychiatry, cognitive science, and human-computer interaction, to propose a con…

Body language on the pitch: insights into soccer players' nonverbal behavior at the FIFA men's World Cup 2022.

Communication is an important aspect in team sports, yet there is a lack of studies looking at intrateam communication during performance. The aim of this study was therefore to explore soccer players' use of nonverbal behavior (NVB) at the FIFA men's World Cup 2022. A total of 18,031 distinct NVBs were registered for 143 individual players from 33 games, representing all 32 participating national teams. NVB was divided into tactical and emotional categories. Several statistical tests were performed to investigate the relationship between NVB and potential constraints (e.g., game stage, game h

Altered dynamic functional connectivity of the language network associated with electronegative L5 in patients with mild cognitive impairment.

Language impairment is increasingly recognized as an early marker of neurodegeneration in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). L5, an electronegative subfraction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, has been implicated in both vasculopathy and neurodegenerative processes, positioning it as a potential contributing factor to MCI pathology. This study investigates alterations in the connectivity and dynamics of core language networks and aims to elucidate the diverse pathophysiological processes underlying language decline. We enrolled 22 patients with clinically defined MCI and 30 cognitively no…

Assessing Language Impairments Across the Neurodegeneration Continuum: Diagnostic Utility of the BECLA-TR in MCI and Alzheimer Disease.

BACKGROUND: As the global population ages, the prevalence of major neurocognitive disorders (MND), particularly Alzheimer disease (AD), continues to rise. Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is considered a prodromal stage of AD, yet differentiating MCI from early-stage AD remains a clinical challenge, especially regarding language impairments. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the diagnostic utility of the Turkish adaptation of the Batterie d'Évaluation Cognitive du Langage (BECLA-Tr) and to determine its effectiveness as one of the first multidimensional language assessments standardized f…

Development and pilot evaluation of a large language model-based clinical simulation system for medical education in gastroenterology.

BACKGROUND: Medical education relies on experience to develop clinical reasoning skills, yet patient access is often limited. Large language models (LLMs) offer an accessible alternative for simulating patient encounters. We aimed to develop and evaluate an LLM-based clinical simulation system for gastroenterology that simulates entire clinical encounters in natural language, from history-taking through to treatment and follow-up planning. METHODS: The study was conducted in three phases. First, a system comprising an LLM-based clinical case generator, an LLM-based patient simulator, and a we…

Language performance in children with cerebral palsy: the role of cortical auditory processing beyond motor and cognitive factors.

BACKGROUND: Language impairments in children with cerebral palsy (CP) are often attributed to motor limitations; however, the contribution of central auditory processing remains insufficiently understood. Cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) provide an objective means of assessing auditory cortical processing and may offer insight into the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying language outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between cortical auditory processing and language performance in children with cerebral palsy (CP) and to determine whether electrophysiological measur…

Beyond a buzzword: the need for shared language, education, and enhanced reporting of disability inclusive co-design research.

BACKGROUND: Co-design is an increasingly prominent method for achieving disability-inclusive research. Co-design draws attention to the valu … ecommendations to enhance and maintain the integrity and impact of co-design: 1. Establish a shared language that distinguishes levels of participation, clarifies epistemic assumptions, and articulates underlying values. This is critical to ensure that co-design claims accurately reflect the nature of involvement. 2. Build capacity and capability for resea …
