Confronting the Challenge of Modeling Cloud and Precipitation Microphysics.

In the atmosphere, microphysics refers to the microscale processes that affect cloud and precipitation particles and is a key linkage among the various components of Earth's atmospheric water and energy cycles. The representation of microphysical processes in models continues to pose a major challenge leading to uncertainty in numerical weather forecasts and climate simulations. In this paper, the problem of treating microphysics in models is divided into two parts: (i) how to represent the population of cloud and precipitation particles, given the impossibility of simulating all particles ind

A noninvasive MRI based approach to estimate the mechanical properties of human knee ligaments.

Characterization of the main tibiofemoral ligaments is an essential step in developing patient-specific computational models of the knee joint for personalized surgery pre-planning. Tensile tests are commonly performed in-vitro to characterize the mechanical stiffness and rupture force of the knee ligaments which makes the technique unsuitable for in-vivo application. The time required for the limited noninvasive approaches for properties estimation based on knee laxity remained the main obstacle in clinical implementation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique can be a platform to noninv

Baseline biomarkers of connectome disruption and atrophy predict future processing speed in early multiple sclerosis.

The development of accurate prognoses in multiple sclerosis is difficult, as the disease is characterized by heterogeneous patterns of brain abnormalities that relate in an unclear way to future impairments. Here, we use a statistical modeling approach to determine if the baseline pattern of connectome disruption due to T2-FLAIR lesions could predict a patient's future processing speed, as measured using the Symbol Digits Modality Test scores. Imaging data, demographics and Symbol Digits Modality Test scores were collected from 61 early relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis patients. The Netw

A Bayesian Model to Predict Right Ventricular Failure Following Left Ventricular Assist Device Therapy.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the use of a Bayesian statistical model to address the limited predictive capacity of existing risk scores derived from multivariate analyses. This is based on the hypothesis that it is necessary to consider the interrelationships and conditional probabilities among independent variables to achieve sufficient statistical accuracy. BACKGROUND: Right ventricular failure (RVF) continues to be a major adverse event following left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. METHODS: Data used for this study were derived from 10,909 adult patients from the In

Spatial patterns of tuberculosis incidence in Cologne (Germany).

In many European countries, the decline of tuberculosis notification rates levelled off in the mid 1980s. Germany has been facing only a very modest resurgence of tuberculosis (TB) in the early 1990s, but until now, the notification rate does not yet fulfil the WHO definition of a low incidence country. Mainly immigration from high incidence countries is held responsible for the delayed decline and temporary increase of TB. This paper seeks to investigate the inner-urban strength of association between tuberculosis and several potential risk factors in the city of Cologne using geographical an

The Challenges of Designing Intelligent Tutoring Systems for Health Care in Low-Income Latina Populations.

Conversational intelligent tutoring systems (CITS) have the potential to bring health education to low-income communities at scale. Although educational attainment is usually low, the health literacy spectrum within these communities can be wide. Therefore, special attention should be paid when designing and evaluating CITS within these communities. Visual, linguistic, subject matter, and cultural models must be considered. Moreover, evaluating CITS can be challenging. The instruments used to assess the impact of these systems must consider the levels of health literacy of the individuals who

Maternal postnatal depression and sensitive parenting: Considering developmental timing with a causally informative approach.

Models of intergenerational transmission of depression implicate lower sensitive parenting as a key mechanism linking maternal depressive symptoms and offspring outcomes. A well-developed literature demonstrates consistent, modest, negative associations between maternal depressive symptoms and sensitive parenting. However, this literature relies primarily on methods ill-suited to examine developmental timing or account for confounding with time-varying exposures. To address these limitations, we implemented marginal structural models, an approach developed to test timing effects and address co

Mitoxantrone and Doxorubicin are anthracycline-based chemotherapeutic agents widely used in cancer treatment. Mitoxantrone is primarily applied in the treatment of leukemia, lymphoma, and prostate cancer, whereas Doxorubicin is effective against breast cancer, lung cancer, and various solid tumors. Both drugs act by intercalating DNA and inhibiting topoisomerase II, resulting in cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in cancer cells. NM-polynomial indices provide a robust framework for predicting the physicochemical characteristics of drug molecules. In this study, NM-polynomial indices for Mitoxantr

Unveiling the interactions between design optimization, modeling strategies, and spatial analysis in genomic selection.

Partially-replicated designs are more efficient than fully-replicated ones. They can be further enhanced through optimization and present positive synergy with fully-efficient models and 2D P-splines. In plant breeding, traditional field trials rely on balanced designs with high replication to ensure robust breeding value predictions. However, genomic technologies leveraging genomic relationship matrices have reduced the need for extensive replication, favoring partially-replicated (p-rep) designs. These designs, while effective, pose statistical challenges due to low replication and imbalance
