Do Acute Illness Perceptions Moderate the Association of Pre-Collision Welfare Benefits and Later Neck Pain or Disability Following Whiplash Trauma? A Prospective Multicentre Cohort Study.

Objectives: Whiplash trauma is a worldwide significant public health issue, with post-collision chronic pain and physical and mental disability; the prevalence of whiplash trauma in the Japanese general population is estimated at 1.2% and in the Danish general population the whiplash condition has been reported to be 2.9%. Pre-collision welfare benefits and illness perceptions have been found to predict poor recovery after whiplash trauma. In this study, we examined whether illness perceptions measured shortly post-collision moderated the effect of welfare benefits five years before the collis

Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor activation: anti-inflammatory effects in the brain.

The glucagon-like peptide 1 is a pleiotropic hormone that has potent insulinotropic effects and is key in treating metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity. Glucagon-like peptide 1 exerts its effects by activating a membrane receptor identified in many tissues, including different brain regions. Glucagon-like peptide 1 activates several signaling pathways related to neuroprotection, like the support of cell growth/survival, enhancement promotion of synapse formation, autophagy, and inhibition of the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines, microglial activation, and apoptosis during neur

Salvianolic acid A attenuates CCl4-induced liver fibrosis by regulating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR, Bcl-2/Bax and caspase-3/cleaved caspase-3 signaling pathways.

Background: Liver fibrosis occurs due to chronic liver disease due to multiple pathophysiological causes. The main causes for this condition are chronic alcohol abuse, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, and infection due to hepatitis C virus. Currently, there is more and more information available about the molecular as well as cellular mechanisms, which play a role in the advancement of liver fibrosis. However, there is still no effective therapy against it. Purpose: In order to find an effective treatment against liver fibrosis, our study explored whether salvianolic acid A (SA-A), a traditional

Microfluidic gradient device for studying mesothelial cell migration and the effect of chronic carbon nanotube exposure.

Cell migration is one of the crucial steps in many physiological and pathological processes, including cancer development. Our recent studies have shown that carbon nanotubes (CNTs), similarly to asbestos, can induce accelerated cell growth and invasiveness that contribute to their mesothelioma pathogenicity. Malignant mesothelioma is a very aggressive tumor that develops from cells of the mesothelium, and is most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos. CNTs have a similar structure and mode of exposure to asbestos. This has raised a concern regarding the potential carcinogenicity of CNTs, es

Activation of the Mitochondrial Apoptotic Pathway Produces Reactive Oxygen Species and Oxidative Damage in Hepatocytes That Contribute to Liver Tumorigenesis.

Chronic hepatitis, including viral hepatitis and steatihepatitis, is a well-known high-risk condition for hepatocellular carcinoma. We previously reported that continuous hepatocyte apoptosis drives liver tumors in hepatocyte-specific Bcl-xL or Mcl-1 knockout mice. In this study, we further examine the underlying cellular mechanisms of generating tumors in apoptosis-prone liver. In cultured hepatocytes, the administration of ABT-737, a Bcl-xL/-2/-w inhibitor, led to production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as activation of caspases. Mitochondria isolated from murine liver, upon admi

Restoring redox homeostasis through S-adenosyl-L-methionine and B-vitamins co-supplementation alleviates ethanol induced hepato-pancreatic injury by regulating glutathione biosynthesis in C57BL/6J mice.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder(AUD) is a chronic condition responsible for more than 3 million deaths annually worldwide and contributes to the development of multiple systemic comorbidities. Chronic alcohol consumption promotes inflammatory responses, immune suppression, antioxidant dysregulation, and nutritional deficiencies, severely affecting organs such as the liver and pancreas. Disruption of methionine metabolism and antioxidant defenses, including reduced availability of S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) and essential B-vitamins, has been implicated in alcohol-induced oxidative stress.

Functional vulnerability and all-cause mortality among community-dwelling United States adults with a history of hepatitis or chronic liver disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Frailty predicts death in advanced cirrhosis and among transplant candidates, but whether a frailty-like functional index identifies mortality risk in the far larger population of community-dwelling adults with liver disease, who are rarely assessed for it, is unsettled. We examined whether a survey-based functional vulnerability index (FVI) was associated with all-cause mortality among US adults reporting a history of hepatitis or a chronic liver condition, independent of poverty and insurance status. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study using the National Health Intervie

Composite Treatment Response from a Prospective, Multi-Center Study (US-nPower) Evaluating a Miniature Spinal Cord Stimulator for the Management of Chronic, Intractable Pain.

BACKGROUND: Measures of therapeutic efficacy in pain studies have historically focused on pain scores, such as the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) or the Numeric Rating Scale. However, pain scores capture a univariate measure of a multivariate condition present in patients with chronic pain, where the pain condition can affect activities of daily living, sleep, quality of life, and mood. Hence, examining composite endpoints, which incorporate outcomes from multiple facets of pain, may allow investigators to better assess improvements in chronic pain patients with various new treatments. OBJECTIVES:

Hidradenitis Suppurativa: Part of a Tetrad of Follicular Occlusion Disorders.

UNLABELLED: Follicular occlusion disorders (FOD) represent a tetrad of chronic, recurrent inflammatory conditions united by a common pathophysiologic mechanism: follicular hyperkeratosis leading to occlusion, rupture, and subsequent abscess or sinus tract formation. First conceptualized as a triad in the 1950s and later expanded to a tetrad in the 1970s, this grouping includes hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), acne conglobata (AC), dissecting cellulitis of the scalp (DCS), and pilonidal sinus (PS). Despite their shared pathogenesis, each condition carries distinct clinical features, epidemiologic

[Bone marrow serous degeneration complicating acute leukemia].

INTRODUCTION: Serous degeneration of bone marrow is a rare hematological complication, of multiple etiologies, which physiopathology is yet to be fully understood. It is described as a focal hypoplasia of the bone marrow and atrophy of its adipocytes coupled with an extracellular deposit of an eosinophilic substance that corresponds to "hyaluronic acid". The prognosis of these lesions depends on the etiological diagnosis. OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 19-year-old female patient without no notable pathological history, hospitalized in a regional hospital for mucocutaneous pallor with an

Longitudinal association between dysmenorrhoea in adolescence and chronic pain in adulthood: a UK population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhoea affects many adolescents and often goes untreated for various sociocultural reasons. Dysmenorrhoea frequently co-occurs with other chronic pain conditions, and adult women with dysmenorrhoea have greater sensory sensitivity compared with controls. We aimed to test the hypothesis that adolescent dysmenorrhoea leads to the development of general chronic pain, including pain outside the pelvis, by estimating the risk of chronic pain in adulthood following the experience of dysmenorrhoea at age 15 years. METHODS: We used data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents a

Advancements in MRI Conditionality of Spinal Cord Stimulation Systems: A Narrative Review of Recent SCS Systems and Their Associated Risks in MRI Operations.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has become a vital therapy for managing intractable chronic pain, especially in patients unresponsive to conventional treatments. However, integrating SCS devices with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) poses significant clinical challenges. The strong magnetic and radio frequency (RF) fields generated by MRI can interact with the implanted SCS devices, leading to potential risks such as device malfunction, heating, and image distortion, which complicate both the safety and efficacy of this essential diagnostic tool. New-generation SCS devices are now de

Expression regulation of Fad and Mboat gene families to cold stress in the noble scallop Chlamys nobilis: A comparative analysis across bivalves.

Cold waves exacerbated by global warming and the resultant sharp drops in coastal water temperature pose serious threats to the sustainability of bivalve aquaculture. The fatty acid desaturase (Fad) and membrane-bound O-acyltransferase (Mboat) gene families play essential roles in maintaining membrane lipid homeostasis and facilitating cold adaptation. Although Fad genes have been investigated in several bivalves, the role of Mboat genes in cold stress and how these two families coordinately regulate lipid remodeling under cold stress remain largely unclear. This study performed a comprehensiv

Screening Yield of Inherited Bleeding Disorder Questionnaires in Women With Chronic Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB): A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Chronic disease, heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), is among the common conditions that may negatively impact the overall health and quality of life of women. HMB is commonly associated with inherited bleeding disorders (IBDs); nonetheless, it remains underdiagnosed in Pakistan. Early detection may result in a more successful curative regimen and the prevention of unnecessary interventions, made possible by screening. This research aimed to investigate the diagnostic yield of an IBD questionnaire screening in women with persistent HMB. Methods The research study used a cross-sectional

Connecting real-world digital mobility assessment to clinical outcomes for regulatory and clinical endorsement-the Mobilise-D study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The development of optimal strategies to treat impaired mobility related to ageing and chronic disease requires better ways to detect and measure it. Digital health technology, including body worn sensors, has the potential to directly and accurately capture real-world mobility. Mobilise-D consists of 34 partners from 13 countries who are working together to jointly develop and implement a digital mobility assessment solution to demonstrate that real-world digital mobility outcomes have the potential to provide a better, safer, and quicker way to assess, monitor, and predict the ef

Risk factors for sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus: a systematic review and meta-analysis supplemented by genetic causal assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus (PS) is a common, chronic, and recurrent condition with unclear pathogenesis. Previous studies have primarily focused on local factors, with limited causal validation of systemic risk factors. This study aims to synthesize observational and genetic evidence to systematically evaluate potential risk factors and explore possible multisystem pathological mechanisms. METHODS: This study primarily employed a systematic review and meta-analysis by retrieving high-quality observational studies to quantitatively evaluate the associations between various risk

Pneumonia-Induced Thyroid Crisis With Thyrotoxicosis Exacerbation: De Novo Graves' Disease Presentation on a Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS).

Cornelia de Lange syndrome (CdLS) is a rare genetic disorder that affects multiple organ systems and is characterized by distinctive facial features, growth retardation, and developmental disabilities. The syndrome is caused by mutations in genes (NIPBL, RAD21, SMC3, HDAC8, and SMC1A) involved in the cohesin complex, which plays a critical role in chromosome segregation and gene expression regulation. Clinical findings typically include dysmorphic facial features (arched eyebrows, synophrys, long eyelashes, ptosis, long philtrum, thin upper lip, and posteriorly rotated ears), growth and mental

The Immediate Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation on Quadriceps Muscle Function in Individuals With a History of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: A Preliminary Investigation.

CONTEXT: Altered quadriceps activation is common following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), and can persist for years after surgery. These neural deficits are due, in part, to chronic central nervous system alterations. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive modality, that is, believed to immediately increase motor neuron activity by stimulating the primary motor cortex, making it a promising modality to use improve outcomes in the ACLR population. OBJECTIVE: To determine if a single treatment of tDCS would result in increased quadriceps activity and

Parkinsonism and vigilance: alteration in neural oscillatory activity and phase-amplitude coupling in the basal ganglia and motor cortex.

Oscillatory neural activity in different frequency bands and phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) are hypothesized to be biomarkers of Parkinson's disease (PD) that could explain dysfunction in the motor circuit and be used for closed-loop deep brain stimulation (DBS). How these putative biomarkers change from the normal to the parkinsonian state across nodes in the motor circuit and within the same subject, however, remains unknown. In this study, we characterized how parkinsonism and vigilance altered oscillatory activity and PAC within the primary motor cortex (M1), subthalamic nucleus (STN), and
