Metastasis to the breast.

Cross-lymphatic metastasis from one breast to the other is the most frequent type of metastatic involvement of the breast. Melanoma, lung, ovary, and sarcoma are the most common types of blood-borne metastases to the breast from extramammary sites. The most common radiographic findings in patients with blood-borne metastases to the breast are single or multiple discrete nodules. Lymphoma or leukemia may involve the breast primarily but more often as part of a widespread process. Their presentation varies from discrete to ill-defined masses and may be obscured by underlying benign proliferative

Analysis of Migration and Invasion in Ewing Sarcoma.

Metastasis is a complex, well-orchestrated process, which includes migration from the primary tumor and invasion into secondary locations as main features. In Ewing sarcoma, metastasis is the main determinant of malignancy, with ~30% of patients presenting with metastatic disease at diagnosis. Therefore, analyzing migration and invasion in different experimental settings in vitro is key to understanding this disease. Among the variety of possible techniques to study migration, this chapter describes the methods of wound healing (migration in 2D) and transwell (migration through a porous membra

Structural architecture of collagen and collagen-fibronectin networks is associated with the invasive behavior of liver cancer cells.

PURPOSE: The remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) is a key feature of tumor development in the liver, particularly in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA). Fibrosis and cirrhosis are risk factors for tumorigenesis and define serious structural changes in the ECM. Fibrotic-induced collagen and fibronectin alter the stiffness and heterogeneity of the ECM. A stiffened and heterogeneous ECM promotes the proliferation, migration, and invasion of tumor cells. Direct effects of structural changes in the ECM on HCC/iCCA cancer cells are insufficiently studi

Neoadjuvant Therapy in Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer: Current Evidence, Evolving Strategies, and Future Directions.

Neoadjuvant therapy is now a cornerstone of muscle-invasive bladder cancer management, evolving from traditional cisplatin-based chemotherapy to novel immunotherapy and antibody-drug conjugate combinations. While dose-dense methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin, and cisplatin remains the cytotoxic standard, the phase III NIAGARA and KEYNOTE 905 trials have established new benchmarks for cisplatin-eligible and ineligible populations, respectively. Furthermore, the integration of molecular subtyping, DNA damage repair biomarkers, and liquid biopsies (circulating tumor DNA) is facilitating a shi

Type I-interferon β induces a strong anti-tumour response in bladder cancer cells.

PURPOSE: For non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), instillation with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is a standard therapy. With a still unclear mechanism, instillation activates the innate immune system, resulting in an immunological effect on the tumour. The aim of this work was to investigate which bladder cancer (BLCA) cells can be activated by interferon (IFN) exposure. METHODS: The BLCA cell lines RT4 and SW780 were stimulated with IFN-α2, -β and -λ1 over 4-72 h. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) was used to determine the expression of IFN receptor subunits (RS) and selected interferon-stimu

Contemporary Role for Blue Light Cystoscopy Across the Bladder Cancer Disease Spectrum.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to synthesize recent evidence and accounts evaluating the utility of blue light cystoscopy (BLC) across the disease spectrum of bladder cancer, including its diagnostic, surveillance, and post-treatment uses, as well as its outpatient applications, economic impact, patient perspectives, and future directions. RECENT FINDINGS: While initial studies on BLC suggested an advantage over traditional cystoscopy in terms of diagnostic power and recurrence rates for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer, recent studies are more equivocal on its benefits and suggest that

[Perioperative therapy for muscle-invasive bladder cancer-current treatment concepts].

The updated version of the German S3 guideline for bladder cancer introduces several changes in the areas of diagnostics, perioperative systemic therapy, and rehabilitation, as well as psycho-oncological and palliative care for bladder cancer patients. In urinary diagnostics, the Paris system, including a quality algorithm, has been introduced to improve the comparability of cytological findings. Imaging diagnostics now recommends multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with Vesical Imaging-Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS) reporting as an alternative or complement to computed tomog

Use of Shared Decision-Making in Non-Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: With a growing range of treatment options for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), the emergence of longitudinal patient-reported quality-of-life data, and an aging population managing the treatment burden of coexisting conditions, there is an increasing need for shared decision-making processes and tools to support urologists and patients in navigating complex treatment decisions. What remains unknown is how shared decision-making is currently incorporated into NMIBC treatment decisions and which factors inform key decisions in NMIBC. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this scopi

Decoding Immune Mechanisms in BCG-unresponsive Non-muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer.

Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) accounts for roughly 75% of all bladder cancer cases. For patients with intermediate- and high-risk disease, intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) remains the standard treatment, yet it fails in up to 40% of cases. While radical cystectomy is the most effective salvage option, it carries significant morbidity and long-term quality-of-life consequences, highlighting the urgent need for bladder-sparing alternatives. Advancing such therapies requires a deep understanding of the immunologic mechanisms within the tumor microenvironment (TME). This re

Utility of ultrasound biomicroscopy in detecting invasive ocular surface squamous neoplasia.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of preoperative ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) in diagnosing invasive ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN). METHODS: This retrospective single institution-based study included surgical cases of OSSN, in which UBM was performed preoperatively. The UBM characteristics of OSSN and signs of invasion were studied. The preoperative UBM imaging findings were correlated with the postoperative histopathological examination (HPE). The performance of UBM was studied in predicting invasive OSSN, considering HPE as the gold standard. RESULTS: Fifteen patients were includ

Development of a nomogram for predicting extramural venous invasion in colon cancer using spectral CT multiparameter imaging.

PURPOSE: To develop a predictive model based on spectral CT-derived parameters for preoperative assessment of extramural venous invasion (EMVI) in patients with colon cancer. METHODS: This retrospective study included 235 patients with pathologically confirmed colon cancer from two medical centers between September 2022 and July 2024 (192 from center 1 and 43 from center 2). Virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs) ranging from 40 to 120 keV (20 keV increments) were evaluated to identify the optimal energy level based on tumor CT value, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR

Ultrastructural Changes of the Peri-Tumoral Collagen Fibers and Fibrils Array in Different Stages of Mammary Cancer Progression.

Breast cancer invasion and subsequent metastasis to distant tissues occur when cancer cells lose cell-cell contact, develop a migrating phenotype, and invade the basement membrane (BM) and the extracellular matrix (ECM) to penetrate blood and lymphatic vessels. The identification of the mechanisms which induce the development from a ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) to a minimally invasive breast carcinoma (MIBC) is an emerging area of research in understanding tumor invasion and metastatic potential. To investigate the progression from DCIS to MIBC, we analyzed peritumoral collagen architecture

Sleeve basal segmentectomy with pulmonary artery division for lung cancer: how to do it.

Sleeve segmentectomy was originally developed to preserve the lung volume in patients who were unable to tolerate lobectomy. We herein report an immunocompromised patient with potentially curable peripheral squamous cell carcinoma in whom sleeve basal segmentectomy was performed for a 1.8-cm tumor with endobronchial growth that occluded B7 and invaded the inlet of the middle lobar bronchus and B6. To provide sufficient surgical exposure for complex double-barrel reconstruction after segmentectomy, A6 was divided and reconstructed after the anastomosis was complete. This technique may be applic

[Research Progress on Imaging Diagnosis of Non-small Cell Lung Cancer
Which Invades Pleura or Chest Wall].

Accurate staging is the fundamental basis for the treatment and prognosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and whether the tumor involves the pleura or chest wall is a critical aspect in assessing the staging of peripheral lung cancer. Imaging techniques such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound (US) and positron emission tomography (PET) are widely used to determine pleural invasion in NSCLC. There has been an increasing number of studies evaluating whether NSCLC invades the pleura and the extent of such invasion. This article provides a review of th

Nomogram vs. Depth of invasion for predicting occult lymph node metastasis in cT1-2N0 buccal squamous cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a nomogram prediction model for occult lymph node metastasis (LNM) in patients with cT1-2N0 buccal squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC), then to compare its predictive efficacy against depth of invasion (DOI). METHODS: Clinical data were retrieved for patients undergoing primary tumor resection and neck dissection from June 2020 to August 2024. Based on the risk factors screened by Lasso regression, we established four candidate models: logistic regression, random forest, support vector machine, and XGboost. The optimal model was determined by comparing the values of areas und

Tumor microenvironment-preserving gliosarcoma organoids as an in vitro preclinical platform: a comparative analysis with glioblastoma models.

BACKGROUND: Gliosarcoma (GS) is a rare variant of glioblastoma (GBM), characterized by biphasic glial and sarcomatous histology and poor prognosis. Despite its distinct clinical features, GS remains underrepresented in glioma research due to the lack of biologically faithful and experimentally tractable models. METHODS: We established patient-derived gliosarcoma organoids (GSOs) from freshly resected tumors using a suspension culture system without enzymatic dissociation. Histological, molecular, and functional properties were evaluated using H&E staining, immunohistochemistry, whole-exome se

miRNA-21, an oncomiR that regulates cell proliferation, migration, invasion and therapy response in lung cancer.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death globally, with poor survival rates due mostly to a lack of early detection. The usual diagnostic technique includes a biopsy, which is frequently performed later in the disease's progression. In order to uncover processes that improve illness detection and prognosis, miRNA-21 emerges as a major miRNA identified in a variety of cancer types, including lung cancer. This review compiles insights into the involvement of miRNA-21 within the distinct cellular processes underlying lung cancer. To achieve this, we conducted an extensive literatu
