Psychiatric aspects of abnormal movement disorders.

It has been postulated that some movement disorders are secondary to unresolved, unconscious mental conflict; however, psychotherapeutic intervention has been unsuccessful and psychoanalytic formulations have not been shown to be valid. In addition, there is the interesting observation that some medications, stereotactic surgery and biofeedback have been successful in treating movement disorders. Moreover, as in the cases of amphetamine-induced stereotyped behavior, Parkinsonism, the acute dyskinesias, and Tardive Dyskinesia, there is evidence that some involuntary disorders of movement are bi

Behavioral Improvements following Lesion Resection for Pediatric Epilepsy: Pediatric Psychosurgery?

INTRODUCTION: Resection of brain lesions associated with refractory epilepsy to achieve seizure control is well accepted. However, concurrent behavioral effects of these lesions such as changes in mood, personality, and cognition and the effects of surgery on behavior have not been well characterized. We describe 5 such children with epileptogenic lesions and significant behavioral abnormalities which improved after surgery. CASE DESCRIPTIONS: Five children (ages 3-14 years) with major behavioral abnormalities and lesional epilepsy were identified and treated at our center. Behavioral problem

Assessment of psychosocial functioning and its risk factors in children with pectus excavatum.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial functioning is poor in patients with pectus excavatum (PE). However, a comprehensive understanding of this issue does not exist. The aim of this study was to assess the severity of psychosocial problems as associated with PE, as well as to identify its risk factors. METHODS: A comparative study was performed at the Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences/Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital in Chengdu, China. Patients age 6 to 16 who admitted to the outpatient department for the evaluation or treatment for PE were included in the study. In addition to parental reports of

Cooccurrence of problems in activity level, attention, psychosocial adjustment, reading and writing in children with developmental coordination disorder.

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the cooccurrence of problems in activity level, attention, reading, writing and psychosocial adjustment of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). A parent-report questionnaire, the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire - Chinese version (DCDQ-C), was used to screen first to third graders from 13 mainstream schools in Taipei. Two standardized motor tests were then administered to those who scored below 10% on the DCDQ-C. Tests of activity level, attention, reading, writing and psychosocial adjustment were then administer

Quadtree SBFEM and MSPM Based Uncertain Damage Analysis With Random Field Model for Soft Biological Tissues.

This paper presents a numerical model for damage problems in soft biological tissues with random fields, integrating the advantages of the modified stochastic perturbation method (MSPM) and quadtree scaled boundary finite element method (quadtree SBFEM). The anisotropic hyperelastic constitutive model is used, and the damage behavior is described by a gradient-enhanced damage model without mesh dependence. The deterministic problem is formulated by the quadtree SBFEM with the benefit of convenient mesh regeneration directly from images. In order to describe spatial heterogeneous soft biologica

Differentiating Symptoms of ADHD in Preschoolers: The Role of Emotion Regulation and Executive Function.

Objective: This study examined the extent to which individual differences in executive function (EF) and emotion regulation (ER) were uniquely associated with inattention and hyperactivity symptoms of ADHD, respectively. Method: Participants included 249 preschool children with at-risk or clinically elevated levels of externalizing behavior problems (EBPs). Results: Regression analyses were conducted examining the association between EF and ER-as reported by parents/teachers and assessed via child task performance-and hyperactivity and inattention. Even after accounting for IQ, age, sex, and s

Does size matter? An examination of problem gamblers' skin conductance responses to large and small magnitude rewards.

Previous research has shown that individuals with substance use disorder equally value small and large magnitude rewards. This has led some researchers to conceptualize the problematic behaviors associated with this disorder as being, at least in part, caused by a deficiency in processing reward stimuli. Considering the documented similarities between substance use disorder and disordered gambling, the current study sought to investigate whether problem gamblers also display such an aberrant pattern of incentive processing. Skin conductance responses (SCRs) to small and large magnitude wins we

Pupil response and attention skills in Down syndrome.

Down syndrome (DS) is characterized by attentional problems. Little is known about the neural correlates of attention problems in DS due to difficulties in evaluation. Pupil dilation, associated with an increase in cognitive load and locus coeruleus-noradrenaline system activity in humans, is a neurophysiological measurement that may help to characterize such problems. The aim of this research was to investigate the link between a phasic pupil dilation response and target detection in people with DS, as compared with a control group with typical development (TD) matched by mental age. The effectiveness and applicability of motivational interviewing: a practice-friendly review of four meta-analyses.

This article reviews the research support for Motivational interviewing (MI) so that practitioners can make informed decisions about the value and applicability of MI in their clinical work. We highlight the evidence from the three published meta-analyses of MI and a recent meta-analysis that we completed. MI is significantly (10%-20%) more effective than no treatment and generally equal to other viable treatments for a wide variety of problems ranging from substance use (alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, and other drugs) to reducing risky behaviors and increasing client engagement in treatment. Behaviour problems in institutionalised people with intellectual disability and schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Although our understanding of dual diagnosis has improved, a deficit still exists in our knowledge of how schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) manifest themselves in individuals with intellectual disability (ID). In addition, little is known about the relationship between behaviour problems and psychopathology in this population. METHOD: Utilising the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI), three areas of problem behaviour (self-injurious, stereotyped, and aggressive/destructive) were assessed in 58 individuals with ID divided into three groups (with SSD, with a diagnosis of psychopa

Responses to depression in children: reconceptualizing the relation among response styles.

We propose that researchers should utilize ratio scores when examining the response styles theory rather than examine each of the response styles separately. Higher ratio scores indicate a higher probability of engaging in ruminative, as opposed to distracting and problem solving, behaviors. In Phase One, we examined the factor structure and reliability of the Children's Response Styles Questionnaire (CRSQ) in a sample of 287 third through sixth grade schoolchildren. A two factor solution was obtained: (1) Rumination and (2) Distraction and Problem Solving. Both factors exhibited strong psycho

Responsiveness in interactions of mothers and sons with ADHD: relations to maternal and child characteristics.

We observed mother-child interactions, at baseline, in 136 families of 7-10-year-old boys with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who were part of a large clinical trial, the Multimodal Treatment Study of Children with ADHD. Independent coders rated stylistic aspects of maternal behavior and factor analyses revealed a responsiveness factor that included overall responsiveness and sensitivity to the child, warmth and acceptance, and appropriate control. We examined relations between maternal responsiveness and (a) maternal depressive symptoms and maternal childhood ADHD symptoms, a

Disordered gambling among university-based medical and dental patients: a focus on Internet gambling.

The authors evaluated gambling behaviors, including Internet gambling, among patients seeking free or reduced-cost dental or health care. Three hundred eighty-nine patients at university health clinics completed a questionnaire that included the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS; H. R. Lesieur & S. Blume, 1987). All respondents had gambled in their lifetimes, with 70% gambling in the past 2 months. On the basis of SOGS scores, 10.6% were problem gamblers, and 15.4% were pathological gamblers. The most common forms of gambling were lottery, slot machines, and scratch tickets. Internet gambling w

Late effects of therapy in orbital rhabdomyosarcoma in children. A report from the Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study.

Late effects of therapy were evaluated in 50 children surviving orbital rhabdomyosarcoma following treatment on Intergroup Rhabdomyosarcoma Study I. All patients had microscopic or gross tumor present following surgery and subsequently received radiotherapy and various combinations of chemotherapeutic agents. Problems in the eye included infections and functional and structural changes. Decreased vision in the treated eye was the most common functional problem and in most patients related to cataract formation, which occurred in 90% of eyes. Changes in the cornea and retina were also seen. Bon

[School and occupational history of 30 patients with Klinefelter's syndrome. Significance of early diagnosis].

Thirty men aged 17-48 years with pure 47,XXY Klinefelter syndrome have been studied. The group was a positive selection diagnosed not on account of behavior problems but infertility or hypogonadism. Interviews and additional information revealed, almost without exception, the characteristic personality traits of XXY patients. At school, problems arose early, particularly in relation to language. Routine administrative acts such as 15 class repetitions had predominantly negative effects, thus increasing the patients' tendency towards social isolation. In manually oriented professions the patien

Impulse control and related disorders in Parkinson's disease: review.

In the past decade, impulse control disorders, punding, and dopamine dysregulation syndrome (which we refer to collectively as disinhibitory psychopathologies) have been increasingly recognized in treated patients with Parkinson's disease. Practicing neurologists must understand these problems to limit potential harm. In this article, we summarize current knowledge regarding these behavioral disorders, including phenomenology, epidemiology, pathophysiology, and treatment.
