An association between female sex hormones and thyroid cancer has been suggested, but the only well-established risk factor is ionizing radiation. This case-control study was designed to evaluate the association between different aetiological factors and thyroid cancer and encompassed 180 cases aged 20-70 years at the time of diagnosis in 1980-89, and 360 controls. We present our initial experience with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 301 pediatric patients with a variety of neurologic disorders. MRI does not require ionizing radiation and can be done easily and safely in children. It is equal or superior to computed cranial tomographic (CT) scans in demonstrating most types of pediatric neurologic disorders. MRI is often superior to CT scans in demonstrating intracranial tumors, although both studies are usually abnormal in highly malignant tumors. There are the results of a comprehensive clinical examination of 112 women of childbearing age who are second generation descendants of those who were in the area of radiation exposure over 25 ED cSv. Incidence and factors leading to chronic inflammation of pelvic organs were studied. Immune status was evaluated by studying of subpopulation of immune cells in peripheral blood and levels of basic inflammatory cytokines. High incidence of the pelvic organs inflammatory diseases in women second-generation offspring due to disturbances in the complex chain of immunocompetent system was defined.
