Enteric methane emission of dairy cows supplemented with iodoform in a dose-response study.

Enteric methane (CH4) emission is one of the major greenhouse gasses originating from cattle. Iodoform has in studies been found to be a potent mitigator of rumen CH4 formation in vitro. This study aimed to quantify potential of iodoform as an anti-methanogenic feed additive for dairy cows and investigate effects on feed intake, milk production, feed digestibility, rumen microbiome, and animal health indicators. The experiment was conducted as a 4 × 4 Latin square design using four lactating rumen, duodenal, and ileal cannulated Danish Holstein dairy cows. The treatments consisted of four diff

Replacing ground Rhodes grass hay with soyhulls in the pelleted diet: effects on ingestive behavior, nutrient digestibility, blood metabolites, growth performance, and economic viability of intensive fattening Lohi lambs.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of replacing soyhulls (SH) for ground Rhodes grass hay (RGH) in a pelleted diet on ingestive behavior, digestibility, blood metabolites, growth performance, and economic viability of fattening Lohi lambs. A total of thirty male lambs (age: 5 months; body weight 20.4 ± 0.24 kg) were allotted to one of the three diets (n = 10 lambs/diet) under a completely randomized design. The diets were with 25% RGH inclusion (control), replacing 15% RGH with 15% SH as a fiber source (SH-15), and containing only 25% SH inclusion on a dry basis (SH-25). Ingestive behavi

Worries, Preparedness, and Perceived Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on Nurses' Mental Health.

Background: In times of global public health emergency, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses stand at the front line, working in close contact with infected individuals. Being actively engaged in fighting against COVID-19 exposes nurses to a high risk of being infected but can also have a serious impact on their mental health, as they are faced with excessive workload and emotional burden in many front-line operating contexts. Purpose: The aim of the study is to analyze how risk factors such as perceived impact, preparedness to the pandemic, and worries were associated with mental health outc

A case of non-scaling in mammalian physiology? Body size, digestive capacity, food intake, and ingesta passage in mammalian herbivores.

As gut capacity is assumed to scale linearly to body mass (BM), and dry matter intake (DMI) to metabolic body weight (BM(0.75)), it has been … rmenters, BM(0.08) in non-ruminant foregut fermenters, BM(0.06) in browsing and BM(0.04) in grazing ruminants. In contrast, MRT significantly scaled to BM(0.24) (CI 0.16-0.33) in the caecum fermenters. The results suggest that below a certain body size, long MRTs cannot be achieved even though coprophagy is performed; this supports the assumption of a poten …

Maximal replacement of forage and concentrate with a new wet corn milling product for lactating dairy cows.

Three experiments were conducted to determine the maximal amount of concentrate and forage that could be replaced with a new wet corn milling product. The corn milling product contained 23.1% crude protein, 9.9% ruminally undegradable protein, 13.7% acid detergent fiber, 40.3% neutral detergent fiber, and 2.6% ether extract (% of dry matter; DM). In experiment 1, 16 Holstein cows were assigned to one of four diets in a replicated 4 x 4 Latin square design with 28-d periods. The four diets contained 54.3% forage (alfalfa:corn silages, 1:1 DM basis) with the wet corn milling product replacing 0,

Cryptosporidium parvum outbreak among volunteers of a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center housing raccoons-2024.

Zoonotic transmission of Cryptosporidium parvum (C. parvum) is often associated with ruminants. We report an investigation of cryptosporidiosis among persons who had contact with raccoons. In July 2024, two states identified 18 human cryptosporidiosis cases who volunteered at the same animal facility. One human specimen and two raccoon specimens tested positive for C. parvum. Molecular subtyping of the C. parvum (subtype IIaA15G2R1) suggested zoonotic transmission between raccoons, humans, or their shared environments. These findings can inform public health actions, developed in collaboration…

Healthy goats naturally devoid of prion protein.

Prion diseases such as scrapie in small ruminants, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in man, are fatal neurodegenerative disorders. These diseases result from the accumulation of misfolded conformers of the host-encoded prion protein (PrP) in the central nervous system. To date naturally-occurring PrP free animals have not been reported. Here we describe healthy non-transgenic animals, Norwegian Dairy Goats, lacking prion protein due to a nonsense mutation early in the gene. These animals are predicted to be resistant to prion disease and will…

Treatment and control of peri-parturient metabolic diseases: pregnancy toxemia, hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia.

The paper reviews treatment and control of pregnancy toxaemia, hypocalcaemia, hypomagnesaemia, the important peri-parturient diseases of small ruminants. Treatment of pregnancy toxemia benefits from early instigation, ie, upon timely diagnosis and is based on administration of energy sources to sick animals. Removal of fetuses, by induced parturition or caesarean section, should also be carried out. Individual cases within a farm require close monitoring of other animals and measures to avoid development of further clinical cases. Treatment of hypocalcemia is based on administration of calcium…

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC).

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are important enteric pathogens worldwide, causing diarrhea with or without blood visibly present and hemolytic uremic syndrome. STEC are unique among diarrheogenic E coli in producing Shiga toxin type 1 and type 2, the virulence factors responsible for bloody diarrhea and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Cattle and other ruminants are the natural reservoir of STEC as their normal intestinal flora. Humans become infected by consumption of foods contaminated with cattle feces. Early diagnosis of STEC infection is important because of the contraindication …

Current understanding of the genetic diversity of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis.

Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is the etiological agent of Johne's disease (or paratuberculosis). Paratuberculosis is a chronic gastroenteritis mainly affecting cattle, sheep and other ruminants. MAP is also of concern due to the heretofore unresolved issue of its possible role in Crohn's disease in humans. We present here a review of MAP (i) mobile genetic elements; (ii) repetitive elements; (iii) single nucleotide polymorphisms; and (iv) whole-genome comparisons to study the molecular epidemiology of MAP. A summary of the findings to date is presented, and the discriminato…

Culture isolation and partial characterization of a Babesia sp. from a North American elk (Cervus elaphus).

Three North American yearling elk (Cervus elaphus) died with clinical symptoms suggestive of babesiosis. Babesia sp. organisms similar in morphology to B. odocoilei of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) were observed in Giemsa-stained blood films from one of the elk. Continuous cultures of the parasite were established. Antiserum raised against the elk Babesia sp. isolate was compared to B. odocoilei specific antiserum in an immunofluorescent antibody assay; we found evidence of differences in reactivity to several Babesia spp. isolated from wildlife and domestic ruminants. Cultured pa…

Pathobiology of copper toxicity.

A review is presented of various aspects of copper (Cu) metabolism. The Cu absorption from the gastrointestinal tract in monogastric animals differs from that in ruminants. This is influenced by Cu binding compounds, sulphide production in the rumen, and molybdenum and zinc concentrations of the diet. Moreover, the valence of the Cu ions may influence the availability of Cu in the intestine. Metallothionein and lysosomes are involved in the accumulation of copper in the liver. The different findings in various Cu storage diseases may reflect different mechanisms of disease. Cu-induced liver ce…

Vector Competence Assays for RVFV in Mosquitoes.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is the causative agent of Rift Valley fever, a mosquito-borne zoonotic febrile illness that primarily affects ruminants, camels, and humans. It is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, albeit with the potential to spread to and establish in non-endemic countries where mosquito vectors are present. Assessing the vector competence (VC) of local mosquito populations is essential for risk evaluation and to develop more accurate control and surveillance strategies. Herein, parameters for VC experimental design, as well as protocols for mosquito rear…

Biosecurity for Reproductive Disease Prevention in Sheep and Goats.

Infectious reproductive diseases pose a significant economic threat to sheep and goat operations. Maintaining records, a defined breeding season, and recognizing deviations from normal are crucial to herd health programs. Signs of suboptimal fertility, such as repeat breeding, unexpected open females, and abnormal gestational distributions, warrant further investigation. Important causes of infectious abortion discussed include chlamydiosis (enzootic abortion), coxiellosis, campylobacteriosis, toxoplasmosis, and brucellosis. Given the potential zoonotic nature of abortion in small ruminants, p…

High levels of antibodies against PtpA and PknG secreted by Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis are present in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder and multiple sclerosis patients.

Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (Map) is the etiological agent of Paratuberculosis in ruminants. Protein tyrosine phosphatase A (PtpA) and protein kinase G (PknG) are secreted proteins necessary for the survival of the pathogen within macrophages. In this study we analyzed if Map was able to grow within astrocytes and investigated on the presence of antibodies against PtpA and PknG proteins in MS and NMOSD patients by ELISA. Map was unable to proliferate in astrocytes after of 72 h post-infection, but we observed a high level of antibodies against both virulence factors, suggesting t…

Diagnosis and Treatment of Hardware Disease.

Eating habits in cattle are less discriminant than other ruminants, and they more often accidentally ingest strange objects while feeding. Penetrating foreign bodies may cause mild to severe peritonitis, penetrate the diaphragm to cause pleuritis or pericarditis, or cause localized abscesses in the thorax or abdomen. Because these objects are most often metal, a common term for this problem is hardware disease. An accurate history and thorough physical examination often yields a diagnosis; however, ancillary diagnostics can enhance accuracy and disease magnitude before exploratory surgery. Tre…
