Simplifying Oral health evaluation: a novel approach through single-item surveys.

BACKGROUND: This study adopts a novel approach of using single-item surveys to simplify the assessment of oral health status and behaviors among Japanese private sector employees. We aimed to establish the validity of self-reported oral health in relation to clinical dental examinations, and to elucidate the relationship between oral diseases, health behaviors, and self-assessments. A secondary aim was to explore the association of self-rated oral health with oral health behaviors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Self-administered questionnaires and dental examinations were obtained from 2262 Japanese

Influences of wheelchair-related efficacy on life-space mobility in adults who use a wheelchair and live in the community.

BACKGROUND: Self-efficacy has important implications for health and functioning in people with limited mobility. However, the influence of self-efficacy on mobility in adults who use wheelchairs has yet to be investigated. OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to: (1) estimate the direct association between wheelchair use self-efficacy and life-space mobility and (2) investigate an indirect effect through wheelchair skills. DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study. METHODS: Participants (N=124) were adults who use a wheelchair, live in the community, and were 50 years of age and older (X̅=59.6

Self-medication and related health complaints among expatriate high school students in the United Arab Emirates.

BACKGROUND: Self-medication, often without adult guidance, has been reported to be a common practice during adolescence. Similar to other preventable health-risk behaviors initiated in early adolescence, it has become a cause for concern universally. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the prevalence of self-medication with both prescribed and non-prescribed (OTC) medications, related health complaints, sources of drugs, and sources of drug recommendation, and gender differences related to self-medication among expatriate high school students in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). METHODS: A cross-se

Longitudinal and Bidirectional Relationships Between Reading Ability, Internalising Symptoms, and Academic Self-Concept in Adolescence: Evidence from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children.

Poor reading ability is associated with internalising symptoms in children; however, little research has been done with adolescents. The current study used self- and parent-report data from two cohorts of the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC; N = 2222 and N = 2213) to test the longitudinal and bidirectional relationships between reading ability and internalising symptoms across adolescence (10/11 years, 12/13 years, 14/15 years, 16/17 years), and whether academic self-concept mediated these relationships. Adapted cross-lagged panel models found no significant longitudinal relati

Reliability and Validity of the Japanese Version of the Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale in Older People Undergoing Lower Extremity Arthroplasty.

Current self-efficacy scales for physical activity focus on moderate-to-vigorous exercise in healthy adults, leaving limited options for those engaged in light-to-moderate physical activity. This study aimed to develop a Japanese version of the Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale (ESES-J) tailored for light-to-moderate-intensity activities and to assess its validity and reliability. Preoperative and postoperative patients undergoing lower-limb arthroplasty (113 participants) were evaluated using the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) to establish criterion-related validity. The revised version of the

Occurrence of impaired swallowing ability and change over a year in older adults living in nursing homes.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence of dysphagia in three nursing homes and to investigate whether swallowing function changes over a year. Seventy-three individuals participated (median age 89 years) and were tested with the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS). The participants estimated self-perceived swallowing ability with a self-report questionnaire. Thirty-eight participants (52%) exhibited dysphagia according to the GUSS. Thirty-six participants (49%) showed symptoms of dysphagia according to the self-report questionnaire. The study also investigated how well the

Self-Powered Electrodeposition System for Sub-10-nm Silver Nanoparticles with High-Efficiency Antibacterial Activity.

Recently, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been widely applied in sterilization due to their excellent antibacterial properties. However, AgNPs require rigorous storage conditions because their antibacterial performances are significantly affected by environmental conditions. Instant fabrication provides a remedy for this drawback. In this study, we propose a self-powered electrodeposition system to synthesize sub-10-nm AgNPs, consisting of a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) as the self-powered source, a capacitor for storing electrical energy from the TENG, and an electrochemical component

Psychometric Evaluation and Predictive Validity of an Adapted Adherence Self-Efficacy Scale for PrEP.

Adherence to and sustainment of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) are critical to its effectiveness. Adherence self-efficacy, i.e., confidence in one's ability to adhere to a particular medication, is a key psychological determinant of health behavior that strongly predicts HIV treatment adherence but has been understudied in PrEP research. This paper describes the psychometric evaluation and validation of the PrEP Adherence Self-Efficacy Scale (PrEP-ASES), adapted from the previously validated HIV Treatment Adherence Self-Efficacy Scale (HIV-ASES). Data are drawn from two studies conducted

Exploring the potential moderating role of self-compassion on the relationships between event centrality and post-assault psychological outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined whether post-assault internal processes (i.e., present control, event centrality, and compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding) were associated with distress and resilience among women who have experienced adult sexual assault. The authors also tested whether compassionate and uncompassionate self-responses would moderate the relationships between event centrality and outcomes. METHOD: A convenience sample of women who had experienced sexual assault during adulthood (N = 253) completed an anonymous online survey. RESULTS: Regression analyses sho

Cardiac Rehabilitation Online Pilot: Extending Reach of Cardiac Rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: While cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is recommended for all patients after an acute cardiac event, limitations exist in reach. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current study was to develop and pilot a flexible online CR program based on self-management principles "Help Yourself Online." METHODS: The program was designed as an alternative to group-based CR as well as to complement traditional CR. The program was based on existing self-management resources developed previously by the Heart Research Centre. Twenty-one patients admitted to Cabrini Health for an acute cardiac event were rec

Children's responses to cognitive challenge and links to self-reported rumination.

We tested the hypothesis that less effective responses during a cognitive challenge would relate to higher levels of self-reported rumination in children. The sample was 100 children (55 boys, 45 girls), aged 7 to 14 years. A portion (n=65) was at high risk for depression due to having a parent with a childhood-onset mood disorder, and 35 were a low-risk comparison group. Using an impossible puzzle task, we assessed children's responses following failure across several domains: emotions (expressed anger, sadness, and negative self-statements), performance (being off-task, the time to solve sub

Predicting discordance between self-reports of sexual behavior and incident sexually transmitted infections with African American female adolescents: results from a 4-city study.

This study examined correlates of the discordance between sexual behavior self-reports and Incident Sexually Transmitted Infections. African American adolescent females (N = 964) from four U.S. cities were recruited for an HIV/STI prevention trial. Self-reported sexual behaviors, demographics, and hypothesized psychosocial antecedents of sexual risk behavior were collected at baseline, 6-, 12-, and 18-month follow-up assessments. Urine specimens were collected and tested for three prevalent STIs (chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonas) at each assessment. Seventeen percent of participants with a la

The moderated effects of video feedback for social anxiety disorder.

Despite initially positive results, video feedback for social anxiety has never been shown to reduce social anxiety in a controlled experiment with diagnosed participants, and only once with undiagnosed participants. Previous studies arguably did not detect such an effect because of limited assessment of anxiety and potential moderators. We tested video feedback with cognitive preparation among treatment-seeking participants with a primary diagnosis of social anxiety disorder. In Session 1, participants gave an extemporaneous speech and either received the intervention or not. In Session 2, 6-

Everyday and prospective memory deficits in ecstasy/polydrug users.

The impact of ecstasy/polydrug use on real-world memory (i.e. everyday memory, cognitive failures and prospective memory [PM]) was investigated in a sample of 42 ecstasy/polydrug users and 31 non-ecstasy users. Laboratory-based PM tasks were administered along with self-reported measures of PM to test whether any ecstasy/polydrug-related impairment on the different aspects of PM was present. Self-reported measures of everyday memory and cognitive failures were also administered. Ecstasy/polydrug associated deficits were observed on both laboratory and self-reported measures of PM and everyday

Longitudinal examination of maternal psychological control and adolescents' self-competence as predictors of bulimic symptoms among boys and girls.

OBJECTIVE: Because bulimia nervosa is a problem among adolescents, it remains essential to examine its precursors. The specific etiologic chain investigated in this study is such that maternal psychological control first leads to adolescents' lowered self-competence, which in turn predicts bulimic symptoms. METHOD: Self-report data were collected from 58 boys and 73 girls during sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Participants reported on maternal psychological control, self-competence, and bulimic symptoms. RESULTS: Using structural equation modeling, we tested our hypothesized longitudinal

Self-esteem, performance feedback, and cardiovascular stress reactivity.

This study sought to establish the impact of performance-related feedback on cardiovascular responses to stressors, and whether this impact is influenced by individual differences in self-esteem. A total of 66 college women were categorized as either high or low in self-esteem on the basis of their scores in a standardized psychometric test. They then took part in a laboratory experiment, in which they were assigned to one of three performance-feedback manipulations. Following the provision of feedback on an initial laboratory task (picture-matching), they undertook a second task (mental arith

The autologous mixed lymphocyte response: delayed T cell tolerance to B cells in XID mice.

The autologous mixed lymphocyte response (AMLR) is characterized by the proliferation of neonatal, but not adult, thymic T cells when cocultured with adult syngeneic B cells. Studies of the AMLR have revealed a temporal correlation between loss of T cell self-reactivity and development of stimulatory B cells. Such observations impart a role for B cells in the development of T cell tolerance. To test this hypothesis, we studied the AMLR in X-chromosome-linked immune-defective (XID) mice. As B cell maturation is delayed in this strain, we postulated that the AMLR-stimulatory capacity of B cells

Speech and language pathologists' diagnostic approaches to developmental language disorders in German-speaking children with intellectual disability.

INTRODUCTION: Children with an intellectual disability (ID) often manifest a developmental language disorder (DLD). However, conventional standardized DLD diagnostic tools often prove unsuitable for this population. Furthermore, no guidelines are provided on how speech and language pathologists (SLPs) should conduct the assessment. This study investigated how practitioners in German-speaking countries assess DLD in children with ID, including the role of multilingualism and practitioners' self-perceived competence. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 102 practitioners
