Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Prenatal Insomnia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia during pregnancy. METHODS: Randomized, unmasked, 3-site controlled trial. Participants were randomly allocated to cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (a first-line, empirically supported psychosocial intervention that addresses sleep-related behaviors and cognitions) or a control intervention consisting of imagery exercises that paired patient-identified distressing nighttime experiences with patient-identified neutral images. Participants were eligible if they met diagnostic criteria for insomnia diso

Household cannabis cessation and adolescent mental health outcomes in a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Household cannabis use is a risk factor for adolescents' mental health problems. However, little is known about the association of the cessation and psychological impairments in affected adolescents. This study examined the associations of household cannabis cessation and adolescents' mental health outcomes and potential pathways. METHODS: This cohort study used data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study and included adolescents aged 10-13 years with household cannabis use within 12 months at wave 2. Household cannabis cessation was defined as the absence of cannab

Neuroimmune pathways linking sleep disturbance to persistent pain after injury are mitigated by exercise.

Sleep and physical activity are modifiable behaviours linked to pain. Sleep disturbance often co-occurs with persistent pain and may contribute to its development. Exercise is a first-line treatment for chronic pain. Previous work showed that sleep disturbance worsens and prolongs postinjury pain behaviours, exercise mitigates these effects, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor may play a mechanistic role. Deeper insight requires a broader assessment of pain behaviours and systemic biomarkers related to inflammation, tissue repair, and neuromodulation. This study addresses these gaps. Twenty-

Joint trajectories of sleep disturbance and psychotic-like experiences in adolescents: patterns, influential factors, and their associations with mental health problems.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance and psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) are common among adolescents and young adults. However, few studies have explored the longitudinal co-development of sleep disturbance and PLEs in this age group. The current study examines their joint trajectories, influential factors and consequences, using a three-wave adolescent cohort. METHODS: A total of 7529 adolescents reported sleep disturbance and PLEs during April 21- May 12, 2021 (Time 1, T1), December 17-26, 2021 (Time 2, T2), and May 17 - June 6, 2022 (Time 3, T3). Self-report measures were also used to collect

Effects of Prazosin and Other Alpha-1 Adrenergic Antagonist Drugs on Nightmares and Sleep Disturbances in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

PURPOSE/BACKGROUND: Chronic insomnia causes malaise and is associated with depression, irritability, cognitive impairment, impaired alertness, and substance abuse. Individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often have both inadequate and fragmented sleep, putting them at elevated risk for these consequences. Sleep abnormalities in patients with PTSD include frequent trauma-related nightmares, prolonged sleep latency, frequent interruptions, early awakening, nighttime behavioral disorders, and disruptions of sleep cycles. Here, we review the pharmacological treatment for nightmares w

Prevalence of mental disorder symptoms among university students: An umbrella review.

This umbrella review synthesizes data on the prevalence of mental disorder symptoms among university students worldwide. A systematic search of seven databases (inception-July 23, 2023) followed PRISMA guidelines. We included meta-analyses assessing the prevalence of mental disorder symptoms, evaluating methodological quality with AMSTAR-2. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted, along with meta-regression and subgroup analyses for moderators (percentage of females, publication date, healthcare-related degrees, COVID-19 pandemic). We included 1,655 primary studies from 62 meta-analyses,

Subtypes of childhood maltreatment and posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms in an adult trauma sample: The mechanistic role of sleep.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood maltreatment is indisputably linked to adverse mental health outcomes, including an increased risk to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adulthood. The role of childhood maltreatment in the context of recovery from a trauma later in adulthood is not well understood. A variable related to both childhood maltreatment and PTSD symptoms, and a potential link between the two, is sleep. The current study aimed to understand how sleep disturbances may play a mechanistic role in the effect of subtypes of childhood maltreatment on PTSD symptom severity in an adult trau

Clinical Practice Guidelines for Cannabis and Cannabinoid-Based Medicines in the Management of Chronic Pain and Co-Occurring Conditions.

Background: One in five individuals live with chronic pain globally, which often co-occurs with sleep problems, anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders. Although these conditions are commonly managed with cannabinoid-based medicines (CBM), health care providers report lack of information on the risks, benefits, and appropriate use of CBM for therapeutic purposes. Aims: We present these clinical practice guidelines to help clinicians and patients navigate appropriate CBM use in the management of chronic pain and co-occurring conditions. Materials and Methods: We conducted a systematic

Predictors of dream enactment behavior among medical students: The case of the University of Gondar, Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Dream enactment behavior is one of the features of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder. It might be a manifestation of neurodegenerative diseases and can lead to fall associated injuries. There is no evidence of dream enactment behavior and its associated factors in Ethiopia. Hence, this study targeted to pinpoint the predictors of dream enactment behavior among Medical students at the University of Gondar. METHODS: The cross-sectional survey was carried out at the University of Gondar among Medical students selected by simple random sampling technique from Dec 2020 to Fe

Opioid Analgesics Adverse Effects: The Other Side of the Coin.

BACKGROUND: Opioids are the cornerstone of the management of cancer pain. However, the development of adverse effects may compromise the opioid response. They include nausea and vomiting, constipation, drowsiness, sleep disorders, cognitive dysfunction, myoclonus, pruritus, dysuria, dependence and the development of aberrant behaviors, respiratory depression, and some endocrine responses. METHODS: The goal of this paper is to identify the most common opioid-related adverse effects, their pathophysiology, and proposing the possible treatments. This narrative review will describe how these adve

Sleep problems and suicidal behaviors in college students.

Using a large sample of college students, objectives were to examine (1) the overlap between poor sleep and suicide risk status, (2) whether poor sleep was associated with suicide behaviors above and beyond depression, (3) whether sleep problems and depression interacted to predict increased suicidal behaviors or risk, and (4) which specific components of sleep were uniquely associated with suicidal behaviors. Participants were 1700 college students (ages 18-29 years; 65% female) from two universities who completed measures assessing sleep, depressive symptoms, and suicidal behaviors (Suicidal

During day and night: Childhood psychotic experiences and objective and subjective sleep problems.

BACKGROUND: Psychotic experiences comprise auditory and visual perceptive phenomena, such as hearing or seeing things that are not there, in the absence of a psychotic disorder. Psychotic experiences commonly occur in the general pediatric population. Although the majority of psychotic experiences are transient, they are predictive of future psychotic and non-psychotic disorders. They have been associated with sleep problems, but studies with objective sleep measures are lacking. This study assessed whether psychotic experiences were associated with actigraphic sleep measures, symptoms of dyss

The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma and Poor Sleep Health in Adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood trauma has been related to adverse behavioral, mental, and health outcomes later in life. Sleep may be a potential mechanism through which childhood trauma is related to adverse health. The current retrospective study aimed to characterize the relationship between childhood trauma exposure and sleep health, a novel multidimensional measure of sleep. METHODS: Participants (N = 161; mean [standard deviation] age = 59.85 [9.06] years; 67.7% female) retrospectively reported trauma exposure using the Trauma History Questionnaire. Childhood trauma was defined as the number of r

Considerations about the Neuropsychiatric Conditions of Quixote of La Mancha.

Don Quixote of La Mancha, the picturesque character created by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra in his immortal book The Ingenious Nobleman Sir Quixote of La Mancha, presents several neuropsychiatric conditions, including tremor, sleep disturbances, neuropsychiatric symptoms, syncope, perception disorders and traumatic brain injury. Throughout the masterpiece, there are episodes where the aforementioned disorders are evident. This paper makes a list of them and analyses them in the light of the current knowledge of those conditions.

Prevalence and risk factors of excessive daytime sleepiness in insomnia sufferers: A study with 1311 individuals.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have investigated the prevalence and risk factors of excessive daytime sleepiness in the general population. However, few studies have investigated these in the particular subpopulation of insomnia sufferers. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the prevalence and risk factors of excessive daytime sleepiness in a large sample of insomnia sufferers. METHODS: Data from 1311 insomnia sufferers with age≥18years and recruited from the research database of the sleep laboratory of the Erasme Hospital were analysed. A score>10 on the Epworth scale was used as the cut
