Health-related quality of life and its determinants among patients with hip fracture after surgery in Myanmar.

Child Sexual Abuse and Depression in Late Life for Men: A Population-Based, Longitudinal Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Research investigating long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) on mental health for men is vastly underdeveloped. This study strengthened the knowledge base by examining: (a) long-term trajectories of depressive symptoms for men with and without a history of CSA, and (b) moderating effects of social support over time. METHOD: We analyzed multiple waves of data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study. The sample (N = 2,451) consisted of men with histories of CSA and a stratified, randomly sampled comparison group. Growth curve modeling was employed for analyses. RESULTS: Af…

Finnish Parents' Preferences for Online Grief Support Content After a Child's Death.

Online grief support has become a valuable resource for parents coping with the death of a child as it offers accessible and ongoing support during what is often a deeply challenging time. However, the specific content needs within these platforms remain underexplored. This study's purpose was to identify the types of content parents find most helpful in online grief support following the loss of a child. A total of 141 parents in Finland completed an online survey consisting of 62 Likert-scale questions related to their content preferences for grief interventions. The findings revealed that t

Smartphone Use and Social Activities Among People With Mild to Moderate Dementia: Multi-Informant Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Smartphones have become deeply embedded in daily life, supporting a range of social and practical activities. Individuals with dementia can potentially use smartphones to compensate for cognitive decline and maintain independence. However, while smartphones are widely studied in controlled research settings, little is known about how individuals with dementia spontaneously use them in everyday life. Understanding usage patterns and their potential link to social participation could inform strategies to support smartphone use in their social and practical daily activities. OBJECTIV

Interpersonal problems in social phobia versus unipolar depression.

In this study we compared interpersonal problems in outpatients with social phobia (n=50) to those with unipolar depressive disorders (n=50). All participants completed the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems. Multivariate analyses of variance revealed significant group differences. Individuals with social phobia had significantly lower scores on the primary dimension of Control and significantly higher values on the Social Avoidance subscale than did individuals with depression. Our results support findings from former analogue studies. They indicate that social phobia is associated with seve

"If the social circle is engaged, more pregnant women will successfully quit smoking": a qualitative study of the experiences of midwives in the Netherlands with smoking cessation care.

BACKGROUND: If smoking is common within a pregnant woman's social circle, she is more likely to smoke and her chances of succeeding in quitting smoking are reduced. It is therefore important to encourage smoking cessation in a pregnant woman's social circle. Midwives are ideally positioned to help pregnant women and members of their social circle quit smoking but there is currently little knowledge about if and how midwives approach smoking cessation with pregnant women's social circles. METHODS: In 2017 and 2018, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 birth care providers in the N

Authenticated social capital: conceptualising power, resistance and well-being in the lives of transgender older adults.

Trans people experience social marginalisation, stigmatisation and violent oppression in US society and worldwide. Given the importance of social capital for wellbeing, this study sought to illuminate the ways in which trans people build social capital throughout their lives and to use this knowledge to promote new and helpful ways of thinking about social capital concerning the human life course in the 21st century. We conducted a secondary interpretive content analysis of 86 in-depth interviews with trans older adults generated as part of the arts project To Survive on This Shore. Trans olde

Preferred pathways of behavioral contagion.

A behavioral disorder is "contagious" if the risk to a given individual increases when someone in that person's vicinity, family, or social group develops the disorder. So understood, behavioral contagion may be involved in criminality, conduct disorder, drug abuse, suicide, and teenage pregnancy. Previous papers have shown that contagion generates highly distinctive result patterns, from which its presence may be inferred. The patterns concern prevalence in sibships of different size and, in case-control designs, the number of susceptible sibs that affected and unaffected individuals have. Th

"Being the best person that they can be and the best mum": a qualitative study of community volunteer doula support for disadvantaged mothers before and after birth in England.

BACKGROUND: Disadvantaged pregnant women and new mothers are at increased risk of psychosocial stress, anxiety and depression. As well as affecting birth outcomes and child development, poor maternal emotional wellbeing can inhibit the development of parenting self-efficacy and successful adjustment to the maternal role. Social support is a protective factor against antenatal and postnatal depression, anxiety and stress, and improves mothers' confidence in infant care. Community doula programmes have been developed to meet the social support and information needs of disadvantaged women. In the…

Adolescents during wartime: Vulnerability-based profiles.

Adolescents in war zones face the dual burden of normative developmental challenges and stressors from their proximity to active conflict, raising critical questions about their vulnerability during wartime. The aim of the current study was to identify distinct vulnerability profiles among Israeli adolescents (ages 11-18) during Israel's ongoing Swords of Iron War. Drawing on Hobfoll's conservation of resources theory, we assessed protective factors (positive affect, resilience, and perceived social support) and one risk factor (war-related adjustment disorder symptoms). Differences in profile…

Psychosocial resources and psychopathology among persons with neuromuscular disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic substantially affected the lives of persons with inherited neuromuscular disorders (INMD), causing disruption in clinical and support services. While several studies have investigated mental health, distress and psychosocial resources in the general population during the pandemic, little is known about the experience of persons with INMD. METHODS: This study was aimed to fill this gap by jointly investigating both psychopathological symptoms and psychosocial resources - specifically, resilience and perceived social support - among persons with INMD during the…

Finding help and hope in a peer-led reentry service hub near a detention centre: A process evaluation.

When people leave correctional institutions, they face myriad personal, social and structural barriers to reentry, including significant challenges with mental health, substance use, and homelessness. However, there are few reentry programs designed to support people's health, wellbeing, and social integration, and there are even fewer evaluations of such programs. The purpose of this article is to report the qualitative findings from an early process evaluation of the Reintegration Centre-a peer-led service hub designed to support men on the day they are released from custody.
