A foreign body in the pharynx migrating through the internal jugular vein.

We present an unusual and a rare case study of a 45-year-old woman who had swallowed a sharp pointed metallic foreign body while eating meat. The foreign body had migrated from the cricopharynx through the parapharyngeal space and penetrated the internal jugular vein over a period of 10 days presenting as a tender neck swelling. The management of this case is discussed here in brief.

Volvulus of the stomach after traumatic hernia diaphragmatica.

A patient with gastric volvulus after traumatic diaphragmatic rupture is reported. The trias of Borchardt (pain in epigastrio with gastric distension, hiccups with the inability to vomit, inability to secure the passage of a nasogastric tube) must raise the suspicion on acute gastric volvulus, especially if these abdominal complaints are associated with blunt abdominal trauma in the past. In these cases, lateral X-ray examinations of the chest and swallowing studies establish the diagnosis.

Prediction of Aspiration Risk by Using Vocal Biomarkers: Machine Learning Development and Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Aspiration causes or aggravates a variety of respiratory diseases. Subjective bedside evaluations of aspiration are limited by poor interrater and intrarater reliability, while gold standard diagnostic tests for aspiration, such as video fluoroscopic swallow study and fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, are cumbersome or invasive and health care resource-intensive. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to develop and validate a novel machine learning (ML) algorithm that can analyze simple vowel phonations to aid in predicting aspiration risk. METHODS: Recorded [i] phonations dur

Airway Stenosis and Tracheostomy Cannula Type as Determinants of Pharyngeal Residue in Traumatic Brain Injury Patients Using Speaking Valves.

Background/Objectives: Dysphagia is common in tracheostomized patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and may be influenced by airway pathology and tracheostomy-related factors. This study investigated whether tracheostomy cannula type is independently associated with swallowing function and pharyngeal residue after accounting for airway stenosis and clinical variables. Methods: This retrospective observational study included 80 tracheostomized TBI patients using a speaking valve. Participants were grouped according to cannula type (non-fenestrated vs. fenestrated). Swallowing function was

Susceptibility-weighted imaging in patients with Corticobasal Syndrome or Progressive Supranuclear Palsy: distribution of iron deposits reflects clinical symptoms in 4-R tauopathies.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with corticobasal syndrome (CBS) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) often show the loss of the "swallow tail sign", which reflects degeneration of dopaminergic neurons and iron accumulation in the substantia nigra pars compacta, and peculiar neuroradiological signs which are, respectively, asymmetrical frontoparietal atrophy and midbrain atrophy. A T2* hypointense rim likely reflecting presence and distribution of neuroinflammation has been recently reported in the frontal cortex of CBS patients. Here we investigated (i) the frequency of conventional radi

Methods of diagnosis and rehabilitation of dysphagia in patients with spinal cord injury: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Latest epidemiological metrics put a global prevalence of 20.6 million people suffering from spinal cord injury (SCI), leading to a burden of functional disability, deterioration in quality of life and reduced life expectancy. A thorough statement of diagnostic methods and treatment protocols for swallowing disorders after SCI stands as a major priority to streamline patient care and cost-sharing. Here we have provided a systematic overview of the evidence on diagnostic and rehabilitation protocols of dysphagia in the SCI population. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: The literature was sear

Left-Right Differences in Oral Function and Quality of Life of Patients Who Underwent Tongue Resection.

Background The tongue plays an important role in oral functions, including articulation, eating, and swallowing. The treatment of tongue cancer (TC) often leads to oral morbidities, such as limited mouth opening, dry mouth, swallowing difficulties, and mucositis. The anterior-posterior resection area of the tongue has a significant impact on oral function and quality of life (QOL). However, the specific left-right differences in oral function of patients who underwent tongue resection remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effect of left-right differences on oral function and QOL
