[Confabulatory anomia from visual and tactile agnosia in a case of multi-infarct dementia. Neuropsychological study (author's transl)].

Observation of a patient suffering from a double softening of the brain (inner side of right temporal lobe, left occipital lobe). Clinically, Korsakoff's syndrome, right quadranopsia, pure alexia, tactile and visual agnosia concerning objects, colors and faces. Relative integrity of elementary perceptions (matching tests), impairments of stimulus identification (Lissauer's associative agnosia). Phenomena of sensoriphasic interactions are reported: normal speech in conversation, contrasting with confabulant anomia when naming or describing visual or tactile stimuli: then, escaping the control o…

Frontal processing and auditory perception.

Disordered processing of the pattern in sound over time has been observed in a number of clinical disorders, including developmental dyslexia. This study addresses the brain mechanisms required for the perception of such a pattern. We report the systematic evaluation of temporal perception in a patient with a single intact right auditory cortex and a large right frontal lobe lesion. A striking dissociated deficit was demonstrated in the perception of temporal pattern at the level of tens or hundreds of milliseconds. This proves that, contrary to common belief, mechanisms in the pathway up to a

Neural dysfunction underlying divergent thinking and its shared mechanisms with protracted withdrawal symptoms in heroin use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Drug use may induce transient bursts of inspiration but is also associated with increasing cognitive rigidity. How neurological damage induced by drug addiction affects higher-order thinking processes in humans remains elusive. This gap limits our understanding of broader cognitive impairment in addiction and prolonged maladaptation during withdrawal. METHODS: The study investigated divergent thinking, a key component of flexible behavior, in heroin use disorder (HUD). Behavioral performance was assessed using the Realistic Presented Problem-Solving Task. Task-related neural signa

Functional Breakdown of Temporoparietal Junction Interaction in High-depression Individuals: Evidence from Multi-Metric Connectomics.

Depression involves impaired cognitive, affective, and social functions associated with aberrant brain network interactions. The temporoparietal junction (TPJ), a multisensory integration hub, exhibits depression-related connectivity alterations, yet the roles of its subregions during subclinical stages remain unclear. This study examined TPJ subregional communication in non-clinical high-depression individuals. Resting-state fMRI data from 586 medication-free young adults were analyzed. Participants were divided into high-depression (HD, N = 130) and low-depression (LD, N = 130) groups using

Occipitotemporal connections: redefining the inferior longitudinal fasciculus through fiber dissection and diffusion tensor imaging.

OBJECTIVE: The inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) is a major occipitotemporal white matter bundle involved in higher-order visual and cognitive functions. However, its anatomical consistency, structural organization, and distinction from adjacent tracts remain controversial. The aim of this study was to address these debates by investigating the dual nature of occipitotemporal connections, refining the classification of ILF subcomponents, and reassessing the inclusion of the dorsolateral occipital cortex component (DLOCC) in the ILF. METHODS: Cadaveric dissection was performed on 10 hemis

Unveiling the content of frontal feedback in challenging object recognition.

Object recognition under challenging real-world conditions, including partial occlusion, remains an enduring focus of investigation in cognitive visual neuroscience. This study addresses the insufficiently elucidated neural mechanisms and temporal dynamics involved in this complex process, concentrating on the persistent challenge of recognizing objects obscured by occlusion. Through the analysis of human EEG data, we decode feedback characteristics within frontotemporal networks, uncovering intricate neural mechanisms during occlusion coding, with a specific emphasis on processing complex sti

Reinstatement and transformation of memory traces for recognition.

Episodic memory relies on the formation and retrieval of content-specific memory traces. In addition to their veridical reactivation, previous studies have indicated that traces may undergo substantial transformations. However, the exact time course and regional distribution of reinstatement and transformation during recognition memory have remained unclear. We applied representational similarity analysis to human intracranial electroencephalography to track the spatiotemporal dynamics underlying the reinstatement and transformation of memory traces. Specifically, we examined how reinstatement

Dysregulated AEBP1 and COLEC12 Genes in Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease: Insights from Brain Cortex and Peripheral Blood Analysis.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory and cognitive impairment, often accompanied by alterations in mood, confusion, and, ultimately, a state of acute mental disturbance. The cerebral cortex is considered a promising area for investigating the underlying causes of AD by analyzing transcriptional patterns, which could be complemented by investigating blood samples obtained from patients. We analyzed the RNA expression profiles of three distinct areas of the brain cortex, including the frontal cortex (FC), temporal cortex (TC), and entorhina

Clusters of co-abundant proteins in the brain cortex associated with fronto-temporal lobar degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) is characterized pathologically by neuronal and glial inclusions of hyperphosphorylated tau or by neuronal cytoplasmic inclusions of TDP43. This study aimed at deciphering the molecular mechanisms leading to these distinct pathological subtypes. METHODS: To this end, we performed an unbiased mass spectrometry-based proteomic and systems-level analysis of the middle frontal gyrus cortices of FTLD-tau (n = 6), FTLD-TDP (n = 15), and control patients (n = 5). We validated these results in an independent patient cohort (total n = 24). RESULTS:

High-Grade Gliomas Located in the Right Hemisphere Are Associated With Worse Quality of Life.

BACKGROUND: The impact of glioma location on quality of life (QOL) has not been conclusively studied, possibly due to the prohibitively high sample size that standard statistical analyses would require and the inherent heterogeneity of this disease. By using a novel algorithm, we investigated the impact of tumor location on QOL in a limited set of 53 consecutive patients. METHODS: The glial tumors of 53 consecutive patients were segmented and registered to a standardized atlas. The Euclidian distance between 90 brain regions and each tumor's margin was calculated and correlated to the patient

The unreliable influence of multivariate noise normalization on the reliability of neural dissimilarity.

Representational similarity analysis (RSA) is a key element in the multivariate pattern analysis toolkit. The central construct of the method is the representational dissimilarity matrix (RDM), which can be generated for datasets from different modalities (neuroimaging, behavior, and computational models) and directly correlated in order to evaluate their second-order similarity. Given the inherent noisiness of neuroimaging signals it is important to evaluate the reliability of neuroimaging RDMs in order to determine whether these comparisons are meaningful. Recently, multivariate noise normal

Frontotemporal degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): a longitudinal MRI one-year study.

OBJECTIVE: Advanced neuroimaging techniques may offer the potential to monitor disease progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative, multisystem disease that still lacks therapeutic outcome measures. We aim to investigate longitudinal functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) changes in a cohort of patients with ALS monitored for one year after diagnosis. METHODS: Resting state functional MRI, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and voxel-based morphometry analyses were performed in 22 patients with ALS examined by six-monthly MRI scans over one year.

Anodal tDCS of right temporo-parietal junction promotes threat detection in low-spatial-frequency channels.

Fast detection of threat is crucial for survival. Previous studies have suggested the involvement of low- and high-spatial-frequency (LSF and HSF) information in the process of threat detection. However, the specific contributions of LSF and HSF information to it are still controversial. Here we probed this issue by utilizing a prime procedure coupled with the transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) technique. Specifically, in a single-blind design, participants were exposed to LSF or HSF faces prior to the presentation of looming or receding spheres. Meanwhile, tDCS was applied over th

Contributions of left frontal and temporal cortex to sentence comprehension: Evidence from simultaneous TMS-EEG.

Sentence comprehension requires the rapid analysis of semantic and syntactic information. These processes are supported by a left hemispheric dominant fronto-temporal network, including left posterior inferior frontal gyrus (pIFG) and posterior superior temporal gyrus/sulcus (pSTG/STS). Previous electroencephalography (EEG) studies have associated semantic expectancy within a sentence with a modulation of the N400 and syntactic gender violations with increases in the LAN and P600. Here, we combined focal perturbations of neural activity by means of short bursts of transcranial magnetic stimula

Domain-general and domain-specific computations in single word processing.

Language comprehension relies on a multitude of domain-general and domain-specific cognitive operations. This study asks whether the domain-specific grammatical computations are obligatorily invoked whenever we process linguistic inputs. Using fMRI and three complementary measures of neural activity, we tested how domain-general and domain-specific demands of single word comprehension engage cortical language networks, and whether the left frontotemporal network (commonly taken to support domain-specific grammatical computations) automatically processes grammatical information present in infle

The neurocognitive signature of focus alternatives.

Focus alternatives are words/phrases that can substitute for the focused constituent of an utterance. In "Carsten has picked [CHERRIES]F from the tree.", (marked by pitch focus on cherries), the speaker wants to not only convey the fact that Carsten has picked cherries, but also to contrast cherries with other fruit that could have been picked, such as plums. Although focus alternatives are key to understanding the implicit aspects of an utterance, nothing is known about their neural representation. We directly contrasted neural representations of lexico-semantic similarity and focus alternati

Associations of brain entropy (BEN) to cerebral blood flow and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations in the resting brain.

Entropy is a fundamental trait of human brain. Using fMRI-based brain entropy (BEN) mapping, interesting findings have been increasingly revealed in normal brain and neuropsychiatric disorders. As BEN is still relatively new, an often-raised question is how much new information can this measure tell about the brain compared to other more established brain activity measures. The study aimed to address that question by examining the relationship between BEN and cerebral blood flow (CBF) and the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF), two widely used resting state brain state
