Fitting complete dentures after multiple tooth extraction in a patient with severe dementia.

Complete dentures were constructed after tooth extraction for a 71-year-old uncommunicative patient with Alzheimer's disease. Although she had never previously used them, her husband requested the fitting of complete maxillary and mandibular dentures. Thirteen teeth were extracted under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation (IVS), followed by impression-making under IVS. Denture fabrication and adjustment were carried out under mild physical restraint. A tissue conditioner was applied to the fitting surface of the denture base followed by regular denture adjustments. The time required for

The relationship between periodontal status and peripheral levels of neutrophils in two consanguineous siblings with severe congenital neutropenia: case reports.

Congenital neutropenia is characterized by a severe reduction in absolute neutrophil counts, resulting in an almost total absence of neutrophils. It is well known that severe neutropenia affects periodontal status. Oral manifestations include ulcerations, gingival desquamation, gingival inflammation, attachment loss, and alveolar bone loss which may result in tooth loss. Treatment with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) may improve this periodontal condition. This article reports the relationship between periodontal disease status and peripheral neutrophil levels in two consanguineo

Daytime somnolence in myotonic dystrophy.

Somnolence in myotonic dystrophy (DM) has not been measured using a reliable daytime somnolence scale. The aim of this study was to compare somnolence in DM patients with healthy controls and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) patients using such a scale and to compare this with potential contributory factors. We investigated 35 subjects with adult-onset DM, 16 healthy controls and 13 CMT controls. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) was the principal measurement of daytime somnolence. Nocturnal sleep was assessed using a sleep diary. Other assessments measured daytime respiratory function, cogn

Biologic width and its relation to periodontal biotypes.

Although average measurements of the biologic zone do not necessarily reflect any one clinical situation, they do establish a basis upon which clinical decisions can be made. Clinical impressions, human autopsy material, and animal studies support the concept of a biologic width. Impingement on the attachment in a susceptible host has shown adverse reactions, including gingival inflammation and alveolar bone loss. The concept is clinically important in determining the extent of osseous surgery necessary in the exposure of sound tooth structure. If the implant-abutment interface is considered t

A study of osteoporosis as it relates to metabolic manifestations in edentulous women.

Among some patients, regardless of age, the jaw loses bone mass, leading to loosening and falling out of otherwise healthy teeth. This study seeks to establish whether this bone loss is associated with the metabolic manifestations of other forms of localized decalcifications, such as in Paget's disease, or with generalized osteoporosis. Sixteen women being fitted with dental implants to compensate for bone losses provided 24-hour urine samples for the quantitative determination of calcium and galactosyl hydroxylysine, a bone collagen metabolite. These patients provided demographic information,

Periodontal destruction and loss of the remaining natural teeth.

Interproximal bone levels were measured from orthopantograms of a consecutive group of 373 patients who had all their remaining teeth extracted in a dental teaching hospital. There was little periodontal destruction below the age of 40. In older patients (those aged 40 or over) 77% of the teeth had lost at least 25% of their supporting bone. 64% of the older patients had at least one tooth with advanced (more than 50%) bone loss. Only 15% of the patients had generalised advanced periodontal destruction (more than 50% of their teeth with advanced bone loss) at clearance. Men had more periodonta

Botryomycosis: first report of human brain involvement.

A 57-year-old man, previously well except for dental caries and a history of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, presented with marching right-sided motor seizures of sudden onset. Cerebral arteriography and scan demonstrated an avascular left frontal lobe mass. At operation, it was identified as an abscess and was totally excised. Histologically, granules resembling those seen in actinomycosis were demonstrated in the abscess wall, but special stains revealed gram-positive cocci in chains within and outside the granules. Fungal spores, mycelia, or branching filamentous structures were absent. Aci

Rare diseases: a challenge in paediatric dentistry.

Rare diseases are an often an overlooked public health problem. Although they are infrequent, occurring on average in 100-500 people per million, these diseases represent a significant challenge in paediatric dentistry due to their complex manifestations and the need for specialised care. Conditions such as X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH), hypophosphatasia (HPP), and osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) exemplify the intersection of systemic health issues and oral health, requiring a multidisciplinary approach for their effective management. Dentists frequently play a crucial role in identifyi

Unraveling GDAP1: Bridging Mitochondrial Biology and Peripheral Neuropathy.

The mitochondrial outer membrane (OMM) plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular homeostasis by regulating mitochondrial dynamics, organelle interactions, and stress responses. In peripheral neurons-cells with high metabolic demands and long axons-the OMM acts as a vital platform for coordinating bioenergetics, calcium signaling, and redox balance. Ganglioside-induced differentiation-associated protein 1 (GDAP1), an OMM-anchored protein, has emerged as a key regulator of mitochondrial fission and transport, redox homeostasis, and mitochondrial membrane contact sites (MCSs). Genetic variants

Injectable CuS-loaded carboxymethyl and sulfonated chitosan hydrogel with antibacterial and self-healing properties promoting periodontal tissue regeneration.

Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease caused by bacteria, characterized by progressive destruction of periodontal soft and hard tissues, ultimately leading to tooth loss. To treat periodontitis, this study combined the advantages of nanoparticles and hydrogels, and successfully developed an injectable aldehyde-functionalized PF127, carboxymethyl and sulfonated chitosan hydrogel doped with copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS/PCS). The CuS/PCS hydrogel was synthesized through a dynamic Schiff base reaction. The injectable hydrogel forms a gel in situ after injection into deep periodontal p

Insights Into the Role of Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans in Dental Biofilm Formation and Cariogenicity: A Literature Review.

Dental caries is a widespread chronic disease that affects a large proportion of both adults and children globally. Streptococcus mutans is widely recognized as the primary pathogen responsible for dental caries, while Candida albicans frequently coexists with it, often forming a synergistic relationship. Despite this, the specific virulence mechanisms of these microorganisms, both individually and in coaggregation, as well as their collective impact on cariogenic potential, remain incompletely understood. This comprehensive review aims to examine both original and review articles addressing t

Treatment of dental biofilm-forming bacterium Streptococcus mutans using tannic acid-mediated gold nanoparticles.

Biosynthesized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are highly attracted as a biocompatible nanodrug to treat various diseased conditions in humans. In this study, phytochemical tannic acid-mediated AuNPs (TA-AuNPs) are successfully synthesized and tested for antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against dental biofilm-forming Streptococcus mutans biofilm. The synthesized TA-AuNPs are appeared as spherical in shape with an average size of 19 nm. The antibacterial potential of TA-AuNPs was evaluated using ZOI and MIC measurements; while, antibiofilm efficacy was measured by checking the eradication of p

Use of Computer Digital Techniques and Modern Materials in Dental Technology in Restoration: A Caries-Damaged Smile in a Teenage Patient.

Prosthodontic treatment of developmental age patients presents a significant challenge to the dentist. The growth and development of the stomatognathic system must be considered in treatment planning. Temporary prosthetic restorations must be regularly inspected and recemented, and final prosthetic restoration should not be delivered until the growth of the body is complete. In addition, due to the complex nature of morphological and functional disorders during the developmental period, simultaneous prosthetic and orthodontic treatment may be required. The case presented in this article is a 1

Neddylation orchestrates the complex transcriptional and posttranscriptional program that drives Schwann cell myelination.

Myelination is essential for neuronal function and health. In peripheral nerves, >100 causative mutations have been identified that cause Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a disorder that can affect myelin sheaths. Among these, a number of mutations are related to essential targets of the posttranslational modification neddylation, although how these lead to myelin defects is unclear. Here, we demonstrate that inhibiting neddylation leads to a notable absence of peripheral myelin and axonal loss both in developing and regenerating mouse nerves. Our data indicate that neddylation exerts a global inf

CMT2 and distal hereditary motor neuropathy associated with VRK1 variants: Case series.

Axonal Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT2) and distal hereditary motor neuropathy (dHMN) are associated with a heterogeneous group of genes encoding proteins that are involved in axonal transport, control of RNA metabolism, mitochondrial dynamics and DNA repair. VRK1 (vaccinia-related kinase 1) is a serine/threonine kinase which is widely expressed in human tissue and plays a role in RNA maturation and processing and in DNA damage response. Variants of VRK1 have been associated with neurodevelopmental and neuromuscular disorders including pontocerebellar hypoplasia, motor neuron disorders and d

Multifunctional magnesium organic framework-based photothermal and pH dual-responsive mouthguard for caries prevention and tooth self-healing promotion.

Caries is considered to be the most prevalent non-communicable disease in humans, mainly deriving from acidogenic bacterial biofilm and resulting in the demineralization and decomposition of hard dental tissue. Herein, a composite responsive foam brace loaded with magnesium organic framework (MPC) is designed for caries prevention and tooth remineralization. MPC can intelligently release organic antibacterial molecules (gallic acid) and mineralized ions (Mg2+, Ca2+ and PO43-) under acidic conditions (pH < 5.5) of biofilm infection, regulating pH and killing bacteria. Additionally, due to the e
