Lactose, a disaccharide in milk or dairy products, is known to promote calcium absorption. The enzyme lactase is needed to digest lactose. Although lactase is secreted normally in childhood, the secretion is decreased with growth, and the activity becomes lower in adulthood. When the activity of lactase is low, lactose passes intact the small intestine and reaches the large intestine, could cause unpleasantness such as diarrhea and stomach ache. This is called lactose intolerance. In this paper, we discuss promotion of calcium absorption by lactose, lactose intolerance, and bone health.

We present transient absorption studies with femtosecond time resolution on the electron-hole dynamics in CdTe tetrapod nanostructures. Electron-hole pairs are generated by optical excitation in the visible spectral range, and an immediate bleach and induced absorption signal are observed. The relaxation dynamics to the lowest excitonic state is completed in about 6 ps. Experiments with polarized excitation pulses give information about the localization of the excited-state wave functions. The influence of the nanocrystal shape on the optical properties of CdTe nanoparticles is discussed.

Effects of the connective tissue metabolism correctors rumalon (a glycosaminoglycane peptide complex) and arteparon (glucosamine sulfate) on the cholepoietic and absorption-excretion functions of liver were studied on a model of toxic liver damage. Little information is available on absorption and metabolism of minerals and trace elements during infancy. The lack of data is related to the methodological problems involved in these studies. By using stable isotopes as labels, studies can be conducted in infants without introducing exposure to radiation, or any other risk, and studies on bioavailability of minerals and trace elements during early life can therefore be performed. This paper discusses results from studies of trace element/mineral absorption and metabolism in infants, based on stable isotope techniques.

Papillary hyperplasia of the gallbladder was found in 376 patients (28.4%) and cholesterolosis in 206 (15.6%) of 1323 cholecystectomies. The absorption spectra from met-haemoglobin from lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis and its complexes with F-, CN-, N3- and imidazole were studied in non-equilibrium states arising in low-temperature (77K) reduction of water-glycerol of oxidized forms of protein with thermolyzed electrons. The Soret band was shown to be not split in low-temperature absorption spectra of reduced met-haemoglobin and its complexes unlike that of the equilibrium deoxyhaemoglobin. It was concluded that met-haemoglobin has a higher symmetry of the active centre as compared to deoxyhaemoglobin.

A case of adenocarcinoma occurring in a hyperplastic (metaplastic) polyp of the colon is presented.
