BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the sequential use of Mitomycin C (MMC) and Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is superior to BCG alone in reducing the risk of disease recurrence in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) with high risk of progression.

Bacterial spores resist antibiotics and sterilization and can remain metabolically inactive for decades, but they can rapidly germinate and resume growth in response to nutrients. Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccine, one of the most successful bio-therapies to date, has been the gold standard treatment for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer for 44 years. International shortages have necessitated rationing this life-saving medication with deleterious effects on the primary treatment of high-grade non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. Understanding the history of intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin gives us insight into the current shortages and future perspectives for novel immunotherapy opportunities against this deadly disease.

We describe a case of a 75-year-old man with abdominal aortic and right femoral tuberculous pseudoaneurysms 32 months after intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guerin therapy for bladder cancer. These aneurysms were probably brought on by systemic infection by Mycobacterium bovis. The infrarenal aorta and right common femoral artery were successfully replaced with an in situ expanded polytetrafluoroethylene graft. Tuberculous pseudoaneurysm after bacillus Calmette-Guerin therapy for malignancy is very rare, and we review the related literature.

An electrophoretic identification chart of the antibiotics penicillin, streptomycin, neomycin, erythromycin, tylosin and tetracyclines was made. Minimum inhibiting concentrations of the above antibiotics were determined for the bacterial tester-strains Bacillus subtilis BGA, Micrococcus luteus ATCC 9341 and Bacillus stearothermophillus v. calidolactis C 953. The obtained results were applied to identify residues of antibacterial substances in the tissues of slaughter animals, milk and other samples, as a follow-up of detection microbiological methods of plate agar diffusion.

Seventeen patients with illness resembling Legionnaires' disease were evaluated for antibodies to the Legionnaires' bacillus. Three patients were Legionnaires who developed pneumonia after attending the July 1976 convention. All three were seropositive (titers greater than or equal to 1:128) to the Legionnaires' bacillus.
