Sleep and the GH/IGF-1 axis: Consequences and countermeasures of sleep loss/disorders.

This article presents an up-to-date review of the state-of-the-art knowledge regarding the effect of sleep on the anabolic growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-1 (GH/IGF-1) axis. This axis is involved in learning and memory and neuroprotection at the central level, and in the crosstalk between sleep and the immune system, with respect to its anti-inflammatory properties. We also aim to provide insight into the consequences of sleep loss on cognitive capacities in healthy individuals and patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), regarding the mechanistic association with the GH/IGF-1 ax

Assessment of the needs of mothers and primary healthcare providers to support early childhood development in Egypt: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The early childhood period is considered the most important developmental phase in an individual's lifespan. However, it is not addressed in the Egyptian health system. We aimed to explore mothers' and healthcare providers' perceptions about early childhood development (ECD) and identify their needs to support ECD in Egypt. METHODS: Focus group discussions with 79 mothers of children younger than 2 years old from different socio-economic backgrounds and residing in urban and rural areas and 26 primary healthcare providers were used to collect data. Emerging themes and subthemes we

Barriers to cardiac rehabilitation access of older heart failure patients and strategies for better implementation.

In heart failure (HF), cardiac rehabilitation (CR) may reduce decompensations, hospitalization, and ultimately mortality in long term. Many studies over the past decade have demonstrated that aerobic exercise training is effective and safe in stable patients with HF. Exercise CR resulted in a clinically important improvement in the QOL. Several clinical and psychosocial factors are associated with decreased participation in CR programs of elderly HF patients, such as perception of exercise as tiring or painful, comorbidities, lack of physician encouragement, and opinion that CR will not improv

Effects of computer assisted cognitive rehabilitation on brain wave, memory and attention of stroke patients: a randomized control trial.

[Purpose] This study investigated brain wave, memory and attention changes in adult stroke patients using computer assisted cognitive rehabilitation (CACR). [Subjects] Twenty-five stroke patients were randomly allocated to either the CACR group (n=12) or the control group (n=13). [Methods] Two expert therapists provided the CACR group and the control group with traditional rehabilitation therapy in 30-minute sessions, semi-weekly, for 6 weeks. CACR was provided only to the CACR group. The control group received traditional rehabilitation therapy only. Before and after the 6 weeks of interventi

A Review of Self-Management Interventions for People With Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Self-management offers a way of helping people with dementia or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to play an active role in managing their condition. Barlow, Wright, Sheasby, Turner, and Hainsworth have defined self-management as the "individual's ability to manage the symptoms, treatment, physical and psychosocial consequences and life style changes inherent in living with a chronic condition." Although commonly used in other chronic health conditions, there has been relatively little exploration of the role of self-management in dementia or MCI. This review aimed to identify group-based psycho

Beyond phonological and morphological processing: pure copying as a marker of dyslexia in Chinese but not poor reading of English.

To examine cognitive correlates of dyslexia in Chinese and reading difficulties in English as a foreign language, a total of 14 Chinese dyslexic children (DG), 16 poor readers of English (PE), and 17 poor readers of both Chinese and English (PB) were compared to a control sample (C) of 17 children, drawn from a statistically representative sample of 177 second graders. Children were tested on pure copying of unfamiliar stimuli, rapid automatized naming (RAN), phoneme deletion, syllable deletion, and morphological awareness. With children's ages and Raven's nonverbal reasoning statistically con

Development and evaluation of the Marijuana Reduction Strategies Self-Efficacy Scale.

To evaluate several psychometric properties of a questionnaire designed to assess college students' self-efficacy to employ 21 cognitive-behavioral strategies intended to reduce the amount and/or frequency with which they consume marijuana, we recruited 273 marijuana-using students to rate their confidence that they could employ each of the strategies. Examination of frequency counts for each item, principal components analysis, internal consistency reliability, and mean interitem correlation supported retaining all 21 items in a single scale. In support of criterion validity, marijuana use-re

Frequent behavioural challenges in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder: a needs-based assessment reported by caregivers and clinicians.

OBJECTIVE: Despite substantial research characterizing the brain injury, a significant gap still exists in providing timely and effective care for children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The objective of this study was to conduct a needs assessment that could help inform intervention programs and appropriate strategies to manage challenging behaviours targeted to families impacted by FASD. METHODS: Sixty caregivers and 26 clinicians from across Canada completed a semi-structured telephone interview. RESULTS: Caregivers reported that the most challenging behaviour categories wer

Effects of levetiracetam, an antiepileptic drug, on memory impairments associated with aging and Alzheimer's disease in mice.

Emerging evidence suggests that elevated hippocampal activation may be important for disrupting cognitive functions in aged subjects as well as patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therefore, reducing deleterious overactivity of the hippocampus may have therapeutic benefits. This study was designed to compare the effects of levetiracetam, an antiepileptic drug, on memory deficits associated with normal aging and AD in mouse models. Pretraining administration of levetiracetam ameliorated memory impairments of aged C57BL/6 mice (17-20months of age) in the contextual fear conditioning paradigm

Ethical breakdowns.

Companies are spending a great deal of time and money to install codes of ethics, ethics training, compliance programs, and in-house watchdogs. If these efforts worked, the money would be well spent. But unethical behavior appears to be on the rise. The authors observe that even the best-intentioned executives may be unaware of their own or their employees' unethical behavior. Drawing from extensive research on cognitive biases, they offer five reasons for this blindness and suggest what to do about them. Ill-conceived goals may actually encourage negative behavior. Brainstorm unintended conse

Functional ("psychogenic") amnesia.

Patients who present with severely impaired memory functioning without a discernable neurological cause typically have experienced one or more severely stressful life events. These patients, who are described as having "psychogenic" or "dissociative" amnesia, typically differ from patients with the neurologic amnestic syndrome in that memory for their personal life histories is much more severely affected than is their ability to learn and retain new information; that is, they have isolated retrograde amnesia. Recent cognitive and brain imaging research has begun to reveal some of the cerebral

Chronic hyperhomocysteinemia provokes a memory deficit in rats in the Morris water maze task.

Homocystinuria is an inherited metabolic disease biochemically characterized by tissue accumulation of homocysteine. Affected patients present mental retardation and other neurological symptoms whose mechanisms are still obscure. In the present study, we investigated the effect of chronic hyperhomocysteinemia on rat performance in the Morris water maze task. Chronic treatment was administered from the 6th to the 28th day of life by s.c. injection of homocysteine, twice a day at 8-h intervals; control rats received the same volume of saline solution. Animals were left to recover until the 60th

Spatial learning in transgenic mice expressing human presenilin 1 (PS1) transgenes.

Dominant mutations in the Presenilin 1 gene are linked to an aggressive, early-onset form of familial Alzheimer's Disease (FAD). Spatial memory of transgenic (Tg) mice expressing either mutant (lines Tg(M146L)1, Tg(M146L)76, Tg(L286V)198) or wild type (line Tg(PS1wt)195) human PS1 transgenes was investigated in the Morris water maze (WM) test at 6 and 9 months of age. The results showed that the mutated Tg mice had increased swim speed when compared to non-Tg littermates or Tg PS1 wild type mice. The swim speed difference did not, however, significantly affect the spatial learning in the WM te

Unlocking orthodontic malocclusions: an interplay between form and function.

It is possible to unlock dental malocclusions in a functional or mechanical manner, or in a combination of these two processes. Functional unlocking starts with an in-depth diagnosis of all aspects of a specific malocclusion including a recognition of those craniofacial dysfunctions that may be present. Craniofacial dysfunctions that may require treatment include those that involve the vegetative processes of breathing and swallowing and all aspects of cranial posture. This form of unlocking deals with the working environment of the oral cavity, that here, is also referred to as the oral funct

Psychophysiological outcome of cognitive, behavioral and psychophysiologically-based treatments of agoraphobia.

Psychophysiological process and outcome phenomena were analyzed to examine differential temporal patterns within and across cognitive, behavioral and physiologically-based treatments of agoraphobia. Eighty-eight severe and chronic agoraphobics with panic attacks (DSM-III) were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: Paradoxical Intention, Graduated Exposure or Progressive Deep Muscle Relaxation Training. Protocol therapists, whose treatment integrity was objectively monitored, conducted 12 two-hour weekly sessions. All subjects received programmed practice instructions concurrent with th

Predicting Care Needs in Community-Dwelling Older Adults Using Explainable Machine Learning and a Multidimensional Approach Integrating Health, Social, and Environmental Factors: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid population aging and a worsening shortage of care workers necessitate the identification of older adults who require proactive interventions. Although machine learning (ML) has been increasingly applied in gerontology, existing studies have predominantly focused on social isolation, loneliness, depression, falls, and frailty in isolation rather than on the integrated construct of care needs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and interpret an explainable ML model that identifies care needs in community-dwelling Korean older adults. Beyond physical health indicators such
