A 48-year-old man with a history of schizophrenia was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma of the small bowel. Neutropaenia occurred secondary to chemotherapy, which led to clozapine being discontinued, which resulted in the deterioration of his mental state, in turn, affecting the treatment of lymphoma. Clozapine was later reintroduced alongside granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, leading to improved mental state without any further incidences of neutropaenia.

Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) suppresses an interleukin-1β-granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor cytokine axis, reported to be dysregulated in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of acute rheumatic fever patients ex vivo. We describe HCQ treatment for 2 patients with rheumatic carditis and a protracted inflammatory course. HCQ was associated with control of inflammatory markers, control of pericarditis in first patient and stabilization of progressive carditis in the second patient.

Superficial white onychomycosis is characterized by opaque, friable, whitish superficial spots on the nail plate. We examined an affected halux nail of a 20-year-old male patient with scanning electron microscopy. The mycological examination isolated Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Abundant hyphae with the formation of arthrospores were found on the nail's surface, forming small fungal colonies. These findings showed the great capacity for dissemination of this form of onychomycosis.

We describe a fatal case of low-dose methotrexate (MTX) toxicity in a patient with psoriasis, emphasizing the factors that exacerbate MTX toxicity and presenting rescue techniques. The patient had a toxic epidermal necrolysis-like condition. MTX cutaneous reactions ranging from toxic epidermal necrolysis to specific ulcerations have been described. The use of granulocyte colony stimulating factor for leukopenia associated with MTX toxicity is discussed.

A 49-year-old woman with a four year history of therapy resistant essential thrombocythemia, progressed to acute leukemia that also proved refractory to chemotherapy. Blast cell features including immunophenotype, cytogenetics and in vitro cell cultures, suggested megakaryoblastic leukemia. In serum-free culture, blasts released GM-CSF and IL-6 which sustained autocrine growth and promoted normal myeloid and megakaryocytic colony formation.

In a 70-year-old male patient with untreated diabetes a febrile orbital apex syndrome of rapid onset revealed a rhino-orbito-cerebral zygomycosis. Biopsies of the ethmoidal mucosa showed numerous colonies of the Rhizopus genus. Despite medical treatment (amphotericin B) and surgery (ethmoidectomy), the patient died within one week. Rhino-cerebral zygomycosis is a rare disease which occurs in diabetic and immunocompromised patients.

Tumor cells from three uterine leiomyomas showing translocations involving 12q14-15 were transformed by transfection using the "early regions" of the SV40 genome. The cells had a higher proliferative capacity, were able to form colonies in soft agar, and showed an increased growth potential. Karyotype analyses of these transformed leiomyoma cells showed that the cells had retained the initial t(12;14) and t(12;15).

A patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia presented with recurrent episodes of severe neutropenia. This neutropenia was initially responsive to prednisone but eventually became refractory. A spindle-cell thymoma was diagnosed and resected with dramatic improvement in his granulocytopenia. Both autologous and heterologous granulocyte macrophage colony growth were clearly inhibited by the patient's serum. This is the first reported case of severe granulocytopenia associated with a thymoma that seemed to be reversed following thymectomy.

Treatment with Corynebacterium parvum or BCG, or infection with live Listeria monocytogenes was found to protect mice against subsequent infection with Entamoeba histolytica. Complete protection was obtained in mice treated with 10(7) (colony forming units) of BCG but not with 10(5). Partial protection was achieved with 10(6) of BCG. These data provide evidence that non-specific immunity plays an important role in the host defense against amoebic infection.

Single examination of the urine and blood by the method described in this paper was carried out in 14 children suffering from glomerulonephritis. L-form cultures were isolated in 11 cases. The cultures were isolated both at the active phase and during the remission. Three L-form cultures reverted into streptococci spontaneously. The revertants showed a sharp difference from the L-forms by the cell morphology and also by the colour and morphology of the colonies.

The severity of neurological abnormalities in patients with xeroderma pigmentosum has been found to be related to their ability to repair ultraviolet (U.V.)-damaged D.N.A. Patients with the most severe neurological abnormalities have the least effective D.N.A. repair is shown by the decreased colony-forming ability of their U.V.-irradiated fibroblasts. These results suggest that the lack of adequate D.N.A. repair is causally related to the clinical manifestations of a human heredodegenerative nervous system disease.
