For individuals living with HIV/AIDS in low-resource settings such as Sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria, cryptococcal meningitis (CM) is a significant contributor to both mortality and morbidity. Despite advancements in antiretroviral therapy (ART), which have markedly transformed the treatment and management of HIV, CM remains a considerable challenge. It primarily arises from delays in diagnosis, limited access to antifungal treatments, and a lack of healthcare resources and infrastructure. With the historical correlation between the rising prevalence of HIV/AIDS and the incre

INTRODUCTION: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is a leading cause of end-stage renal disease. The exact pathogenesis of IgAN is not well defined, but some genetic studies have led to a novel discovery that the (immuno)proteasome probably plays an important role in IgAN.
METHODS: We firstly analyzed the association of variants in the UBE2L3 region with susceptibility to IgAN in 3,495 patients and 9,101 controls, and then analyzed the association between lead variant and clinical phenotypes in 1,803 patients with regular follow-up data. The blood mRNA levels of members of the ubiquitin-proteasome system

OBJECTIVES: Nasal polyposis (NP) is a common and recurrent condition of the sinonasal cavity which has significant impact on patients' quality of life. NP pathophysiology involves a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and immunological factors. Several studies have explored the association between human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class II alleles and NP, but the results have been conflicting. The aim of this meta-analysis is to investigate the association between HLA class II alleles, specifically HLA-DQA1, HLA-DQB1, and HLA-DRB1and NP risk.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted us

BACKGROUND: Both non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) and primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) are pathological conditions characterized by premature and frequently complete gametogenesis failure. Considering that the conserved meiosis I steps are the same between oogenesis and spermatogenesis, inherited defects in meiosis I may result in common causes for both POI and NOA. The present research is a retrospective investigation on an Iranian family with four siblings of both genders who were affected by primary gonadal failure.
METHODS: Proband, an individual with NOA, was subjected to clinical ex

Leukodystrophies comprise a spectrum of genetic disorders affecting white matter (WM) formation in the central nervous system (CNS), of which vanishing white matter disease (VWMD) is one. VWMD presents with progressive neurological deterioration and a variety of manifestations. Ovarioleukodystrophy, a subtype of VWMD, exhibits a distinctive clinical profile encompassing both CNS WM alterations and ovarian dysfunction. Variants in genes of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2B (EIF2B) complex affect the full form and are implicated in VWMD, including ovarioleukodystrophy. This work ai

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have suggested a correlation between alopecia areata (AA) and thyroid dysfunction (TD). However, the causal relationship between AA and TD remains uncertain. The purpose of this study is to investigate the causal relationship between these two conditions. Understanding the potential causal relationship between AA and TD is valuable for elucidating the pathogenesis of AA and for designing innovative methods to prevent and treat AA and its related complications.
METHODS: All data for this two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study were sourced from public da

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Toll-like receptor ( TLR2 ) gene plays an important role in the pathogenesis of bacterial meningitis (such as meningococcal meningitis and pneumococcal meningitis). The association between TLR4 rs4986790 polymorphism and the susceptibility to bacterial meningitis has been extensively studied. However, the results of these studies remain inconsistent. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the association between TLR4 rs4986790 polymorphism and the susceptibility to meningococcal meningitis and pneumococcal meningitis.

IMPORTANCE: Tics are a common feature of early-onset neurodevelopmental disorders, characterized by involuntary and repetitive movements or sounds. Despite affecting up to 2% of young children and having a genetic contribution, the underlying causes remain poorly understood, likely due to the complex phenotypic and genetic heterogeneity among affected individuals.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we leverage dense phenotype information from electronic health records to identify the disease features associated with tic disorders within the context of a clinical biobank. These disease features are the

PURPOSE: Globozoospermia is a genetic syndrome characterized by the presence of round-headed spermatozoa and infertility due to the inability of these spermatozoa to fertilize the oocyte. In this article, we present the clinical case of a young globozoospermic patient with a new, not yet described mutation of the DPY19L2 gene. We also performed a systematic review of the literature on gene mutations, the outcome of assisted reproductive techniques, and the risk of transmission of abnormalities to the offspring in patients with globozoospermia and made recommendations to offer a more appropriat

The global anxiety and a significant threat to public health due to the current COVID-19 pandemic reiterate the need for active surveillance for the zoonotic virus diseases of pandemic potential. Influenza virus due to its wide host range and zoonotic potential poses such a significant threat to public health. Swine serve as a "mixing vessel" for influenza virus reassortment and evolution which as a result may facilitate the emergence of new strains or subtypes of zoonotic potential. In this context, the currently available scientific data hold a high significance to unravel influenza virus ep

STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review.
INTRODUCTION: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, ultimately resulting in paralysis and death. The condition is considered to be caused by a complex interaction between environmental and genetic factors. Although vast genetic research has deciphered many of the molecular factors in ALS pathogenesis, the environmental factors have remained largely unknown. Recent evidence suggests that participation in certain types of sporting activities are associated with increased risk for ALS.
OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis t

Primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) is the most common type of infantile glaucoma, yet it remains a relatively rare disease, because the disease is often transmitted in an autosomal recessive pattern. However, PCG occurs up to 10 times more frequently in certain ethnic and geographical groups where consanguineous relationships are common. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of mutations in the cytochrome P450 1B1 gene ( CYP1B1 ) in patients with PCG among different populations around the world from 2011 until May 2016. We referred to the electronic databases, such as Medlin

BACKGROUND: Left atrial enlargement and persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) are well-known predictors for arrhythmia recurrence after AF catheter ablation (LRAF). In this study, by using pathway enrichment analysis of GWAS data, we tested the hypothesis that genetic pathways associated with these phenotypes are also associated with LRAF.
METHODS: Samples from 660 patients with paroxysmal (n = 370) or persistent AF (n = 290) undergoing de-novo AF catheter ablation were genotyped for ~1,000,000 SNPs. SNPs found to be significantly associated with left atrial diameter (LAD) or AF type were used

BACKGROUND: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is the most common disorder of inborn errors of metabolism. Prevalence of PKU is about 1:10000 live births; however, due to high rate of consanguinity in the Middle East and North of Africa the prevalence of PKU is more than in other areas. It is estimated between 1:2600 in Turkey and 1:3672 in Iran. The best way to identify carriers in PKU families is studying causative mutations, but this approach could be costly and time consuming. As a result, linkage analysis can be considered as a reliable way to detect carriers.
METHODS: Ten non-related classical PKU f
