The role of citizen science in mosquito-borne disease surveillance and control: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) pose substantial global health and economic burdens. Although conventional MBDs surveillance systems remain essential, they are often resource-intensive, uneven in coverage, and often insufficiently responsive to spatio-temporal variations in mosquito presence and risk. Citizen science, increasingly enabled by mobile and digital technologies, offers a scalable complement to expand surveillance reach and timeliness. However, existing reviews have not comprehensively integrated evidence across diverse dimensions of citizen science applied to MBDs survei

Translational gaps and clinical readiness of artificial intelligence and multimodal imaging in breast cancer diagnostics.

BACKGROUND: A persistent translational gap separates the high research-benchmark performance of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced imaging in breast cancer from demonstrated real-world clinical utility. Most systems reporting accuracy above 95% on curated datasets have not been externally validated across diverse populations and imaging platforms. PURPOSE: We critically examine AI-driven diagnostics and advanced imaging modalities for breast cancer, focusing on the barriers-generalization failure, algorithmic bias, reproducibility, and workflow integration-that determine clinical readi

DECODE: An open-source cloud-based platform for the noninvasive management of peripheral artery disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a progressive vascular condition affecting >237 million individuals worldwide. Accurate diagnosis and patient-specific treatment planning are critical but are often hindered by limited access to advanced imaging tools and real-time analytical support. This study presents DECODE, an open-source, cloud-based platform that integrates artificial intelligence, interactive 3D visualization, and computational modeling to improve the noninvasive management of PAD. METHODS: The DECODE platform was designed as a modular backend (Django) and f

Quality of life in adults with Down syndrome: A mixed methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: As the life expectancy of adults (aged ≥ 18 years) with Down syndrome increases for a plethora of reasons including recognition of rights, access, and technological and medical advances, there is a need to collate evidence about their quality of life. OBJECTIVE: Using Schalock and Verdugo's multidimensional quality of life assessment model, this systematic review aimed to identify, synthesise and integrate the quantitative and qualitative evidence on quality of life in adults with Down syndrome via self-and proxy-reporting. METHODS: Five databases were systematically searched: ME

Data-Driven MRI Workflow Optimization and Platform Modernization: An Imaging Informatics and Energy Sustainability Study in a Resource-Limited Setting.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an energy-intensive modality, with substantial electricity consumption contributing to healthcare-related greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs. A significant proportion of MRI energy usage occurs during non-imaging periods, including idle and standby states. While recent technological advancements and industry guidelines, such as those from the European Coordination Committee of the Radiological, Electromedical and Healthcare IT Industry (COCIR), emphasize improved energy efficiency, most available data originate from high-resource settings. Eviden

Design Preferences for Mental Health Apps Among Nondigitally Native Adults With Chronic Pain: Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: On a population level, mental health apps are accessible and effective. However, nondigitally native adults with chronic pain are a large and growing population who have been neglected during the development process of these interventions. Although technology use is rapidly growing among this population, their engagement with mobile health-related apps is lagging because usability is often not optimized for their needs and preferences. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify design preferences and determinants of engagement with mental health apps by nondigitally native adults who

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Mobile Technology Intervention to Support Postabortion Care in British Columbia: Phase I.

BACKGROUND: Over 30% of women in Canada undergo an abortion. Despite the prevalence of the procedure, stigma surrounding abortion in Canada leads to barriers for women to access this service. The vast majority of care is concentrated in urban settings. There is evidence to support utilization of innovative mobile and other technology solutions to empower women to safely and effectively self-manage aspects of the abortion process. This study is part 1 of a 3-phase study that utilizes user-centered design methodology to develop a digital health solution to specifically support follow-up after an

Ameliorating Racial Disparities in HIV Prevention via a Nurse-Led, AI-Enhanced Program for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Utilization Among Black Cisgender Women: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a critical biomedical strategy to prevent HIV transmission among cisgender women. Despite its proven effectiveness, Black cisgender women remain significantly underrepresented throughout the PrEP care continuum, facing barriers such as limited access to care, medical mistrust, and intersectional racial or HIV stigma. Addressing these disparities is vital to improving HIV prevention outcomes within this community. On the other hand, nurse practitioners (NPs) play a pivotal role in PrEP utilization but are underrepresented due to a lack of aware

Digital Therapeutics in China: Comprehensive Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital therapeutics (DTx) are software-driven interventions that provide personalized, evidence-based treatments for various medical conditions. China's rapid technological adoption, large population, and supportive government policies position it as a potential global leader in DTx. However, challenges remain in clinical trial standardization, regulatory approval, product development, and reimbursement models. A comprehensive assessment of clinical evidence, commercialization trends, and regulatory frameworks is essential for understanding China's evolving DTx ecosystem and its g

User Experience of Persons Using Ingestible Sensor-Enabled Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis to Prevent HIV Infection: Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: A digital health technology's success or failure depends on how it is received by users. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a user experience (UX) evaluation among persons who used the Food and Drug Administration-approved Digital Health Feedback System incorporating ingestible sensors (ISs) to capture medication adherence, after they were prescribed oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection. We performed an association analysis with baseline participant characteristics, to see if "personas" associated with positive or negative UX emerged. METHODS: UX data were collecte

Experiences and support needs of patients receiving home mechanical ventilation and their caregivers: a qualitative meta-synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Home mechanical ventilation (HMV) is an important form of support for the out-of-hospital management of patients with chronic respiratory failure and long-term ventilatory dependence. It plays an important role in prolonging life, relieving symptoms, and supporting home living. As the site of treatment extends from the hospital to the home, patients and caregivers must jointly face challenges related to treatment decision-making, technological adaptation, expansion of caregiving responsibilities, and insufficient support systems. Existing studies have often focused on a single dise

Use and Application of mHealth Technologies in Perioperative Surgical Care: Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Surgical procedures and their potential complications place substantial strain on patients, clinicians, and health care systems. These strains are driven by the anticipated morbidity and mortality, so that there is resource-intensive postoperative inpatient management. Given the concentration of surgical services within hospital settings, current standard levels of care have limitations such as communication gaps, time lapses before evaluation, and investment of resources, which limit accessibility and generate disparities in delivery of care. However, recent advances in digital he
