OBJECTIVE: To assess morbidity in children with mild prenatally detected pelvicalyceal dilatation and to document the natural history of this ultrasound finding in post-natal life.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective (on-going) study was carried out in 29 children (39 kidneys) with mild dilatation confined to the pelvis and/or calices confirmed on initial post-natal ultrasound scan. Re-evaluation was carried out at a mean age of 4.2 years (range 1.5-7.8). Clinically, each patient's history, height, weight and blood pressure were recorded. On ultrasound examination the renal length, collecti

Dilatation of the urinary tract is detected in a number of settings throughout childhood. Children may be asymptomatic or present with urinary tract infection, hematuria, or voiding symptoms. Evaluation of the affected urinary tract may require standard radiographic techniques (VCUG, EU) complemented by ultrasound and nuclear medicine studies. The goal of imaging is to differentiate hydronephrosis (HN) from hydroureteronephrosis (HUN) and to provide the correct diagnosis so that appropriate treatment can be given. This article reviews and demonstrates the findings in some common and uncommon c

Submandibular gland function following transoral sialolithectomy was examined by 99mTc-pertechnetate sialo-scintigraphy in 10 cases. An intraindividual comparison between the function of the treated gland and that of the contralateral normal gland was made using a time-activity curve. Although glandular recovery was not affected by the duration of symptoms or the existence of the symptom at mealtimes, it was inversely proportional to the size of the calculus. Furthermore, the prognosis was more favorable in patients when the anatomically normal orifice of the submandibular duct was preserved.

While aortic root dilatation and valvular dysfunction have been well-documented in osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), the nature and extent of cardiovascular involvement in OI have not been clearly delineated. A clinical and echocardiographic survey involving 109 individuals with various nonlethal OI syndromes from 66 separate families was undertaken. Clinically discernible valvular dysfunction was encountered in only four of the 109 individuals (aortic regurgitation in two, aortic stenosis in one, and mitral valve prolapse in one), none of whom were related. Aortic root dilatation was recognized e

To evaluate routine fetal genitourinary tract obstetrical ultrasound screening, and to determine what size renal pelvis is indicative of significant renal disease, we reviewed 4,832 examinations, which had been performed over 2 years, of 3,530 consecutive obstetrical patients. Any fetus that had a renal pelvis greater than 5 mm or a definable cystic area was identified for follow-up. The fetuses of 39 patients (1.1%) who underwent 112 examinations fulfilled these criteria and constitute the basis of this report. A variety of examination criteria were recorded and analyzed in relationship to th

The authors present their experience over several years in replacement of the ureter by a silicone prosthesis. This includes experimental work in dogs and clinical application performed in three different ways: (1) A uretero-vesical or pelvo-vesical bridge. Trials were started in 1967 and on the whole the results have been good, although in some cases deterioration was noted after a few months (18-20). The quality of the results obtained experimentally, encouraged clinical application and the authors employed ten prostheses in patients with advanced carcinoma and obstruction. The results have

Bronchiolar emphysema is a rare, insidious, progressive, bilateral pulmonary fibrosis with diffusion defect. Death follows in five to 10 years after the onset of symptoms because of respiratory failure, cor pulmonale or pneumothorax. In the 20 cases reviewed, the lungs typically showed bosselation of their pleural surfaces, giving the appearance and consistency of a liver involved by Laennec's cirrhosis. Cross sections showed honeycombing chiefly along the lung margins. Microscopically, cystic dilatation of terminal bronchioles was present, with obliteration of the remaining peripheral lung ti

Type II choledochal cysts (CCs), a rare form of congenital biliary dilation characterized as a true diverticulum along the extrahepatic duct, comprise less than 2% of all cases. The coexistence of CC, annular pancreas (AP), and duodenal stenosis (DS) has been scarcely reported. We present the case of a 45-day-old female with a rare combination of congenital upper gastrointestinal anomalies discovered intraoperatively after imaging identified malrotation with concern for possible volvulus. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy revealing a Type II CC, partial AP, and DS. Management includ

Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) comprises a group of rare tumors arising from placental trophoblastic tissue, including choriocarcinoma and invasive mole. We present a rare case of choriocarcinoma with isolated myometrial invasion in a 30-year-old woman with a history of molar pregnancy and term delivery. The clinical presentation mimicked an invasive mole, with elevated β-hCG levels and imaging revealing a vascular myometrial mass. Following a failed dilation and evacuation, and in light of the patient's desire to preserve fertility, conservative surgery via laparotomy was performed

This case report describes a 63-year-old Black man with recurrent small bowel obstruction (SBO), persistent abdominal pain, and hepatic dysfunction, set against a complex background of idiopathic peripheral neuropathy, chronic hepatomegaly, an indeterminate adrenal mass, and long-term alcohol use. Imaging revealed dilated bowel loops with partial obstruction, while laboratory findings showed elevated liver enzymes indicative of hepatic impairment. His clinical course highlighted the multifactorial nature of SBO, likely influenced by anatomical disruptions, hepatic pathology, and systemic metab

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is marked by increased intracranial pressure without any accompanying evidence of clinical, imaging or laboratory findings of intracranial pathology. In addition to headache, nausea and vomiting, typical symptoms might also include diplopia, photophobia and blurred vision. Third nerve palsy is rarely linked to IIH, although sixth nerve palsy is reported in the majority of individuals with IIH. This paper describes the unique case of a woman patient in her 50s with solitary IIH-related oculomotor nerve palsy. Dilated pupils, ptosis and medial rectus pa

The glymphatic movement of fluid through the brain removes metabolic waste1-4. Noninvasive 40 Hz stimulation promotes 40 Hz neural activity in multiple brain regions and attenuates pathology in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease5-8. Here we show that multisensory gamma stimulation promotes the influx of cerebrospinal fluid and the efflux of interstitial fluid in the cortex of the 5XFAD mouse model of Alzheimer's disease. Influx of cerebrospinal fluid was associated with increased aquaporin-4 polarization along astrocytic endfeet and dilated meningeal lymphatic vessels. Inhibiting glymphatic c

A 52-year-old female never-smoker with an abnormal shadow in the right lung detected on radiography was referred to our institution. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed an irregular nodule in the upper lobe of the right lung, suggestive of a pulmonary vascular abnormality. Angiography revealed a direct communication between the right internal mammary artery (IMA) and the right upper lobe pulmonary artery branches, with dilated and tortuous vascular proliferation. As multiple branch arteries were seen flowing into the upper lobe from the IMA, transcatheter selective embolization of t

We investigated the pathological characteristics of renal dysplasia with hydronephrosis and congenital ureteral stricture in two calves. Macroscopically, the affected kidneys were enlarged and the renal calyces were dilated and associated with ureteral strictures. Histopathologically, multifocal regions of mesenchyme were observed in the renal medulla. This mesenchyme was weakly eosinophilic with haematoxylin and eosin, blue with Alcian blue and pale blue with Masson's trichrome, and was immunopositive for vimentin and smooth muscle actin, consistent with persistent mesenchyme. There was async

Cardiac tissue requires a persistent production of energy in order to exert its pumping function. Therefore, the maintenance of this function relies on mitochondria that represent the "powerhouse" of all cardiac activities. Mitochondria being one of the key players for the proper functioning of the mammalian heart suggests continual regulation and organization. Mitochondria adapt to cellular energy demands via fusion-fission events and, as a proof-reading ability, undergo mitophagy in cases of abnormalities. Ca2+ fluxes play a pivotal role in regulating all mitochondrial functions, including A

Diffuse pulmonary lymphangiomatosis is a rare disease characterized by marked proliferation and dilation of lymphatic vessels in the lungs, pleura, and mediastinum. The prevalence is unknown and the etiology is not fully understood. A 22-month-old girl was admitted for polyserositis, with pericardial and pleural effusion. She required pericardiocentesis and pleural drainage, presenting chyle drainage (1.5-4 liters/ day) without response to medical treatment (fasting, parenteral nutrition and octreotide). A lung biopsy was performed. The pathological anatomy showed findings compatible with diff

Lens coloboma is a developmental defect resulting from abnormalities of the zonules and ciliary body. It may present as an isolated pathology or be accompanied by anomalies in different ocular structures. We report the case of a 20-year-old man referred for evaluation of anisometropic amblyopia in the right eye. Manifest refraction was -2.25 +3.00 ×35 in the right eye; corrected distance visual acuity, 20/50. Corneal topography revealed regular astigmatism of +2.46 D at 124°, and wavefront aberrometry revealed an irregular internal astigmatism of +6.27 D at 35°. Only after full pupillary dilat

An urachus is a remnant of allantois in embryo development constituting a connection between the dome of the bladder and umbilicus. It develops on day 16 after conception and closes during the pregnancy to form the median umbilical ligament. Patent urachus results from a failure in closing its lumen in 10-12 gestational weeks. This anomaly occurs in 1-2 babies in 100,000 births. We present the case of patent urachus. In 20 gestational weeks, a dilatation of the umbilical cord with an anechoic mass with a transverse dimension of 19 x 12 mm starting from the fetal insertion and length of 30 cm w

Intracystic papillary neoplasm (ICPN) of the gallbladder is a rare clinicopathological entity with a wide range of malignant potentials. Here, we report a case of mucin-producing gallbladder carcinoma possibly derived from ICPN. A 78-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital for examination of jaundice. Abdominal CT showed dilated biliary trees and a contrast-enhanced large polypoid mass in the gallbladder. Duodenoscopy showed a large amount of mucin extravasating from the ampulla of Vater. Bile cytology showed no evidence of malignancy. Under the diagnosis of mucin-producing gallbl

The Iliad is an epic poem chronicling the journey of Achilles in the Trojan War. The poem is one of the earliest sources of written literature in the Western canon. It is not a medical text, but the many and varied descriptions of injuries and their consequences mean that it is an important source for examining the earliest notions of anatomy and knowledge of the pathologies that result from trauma. Head injuries feature prominently in the text and represent written accounts of neurotrauma from nearly 3000 years ago. Previous work on the poem has suggested an awareness of neurological concepts
