Degenerative hairlets on the vestibular sensory cells in mutant bustling (BUS/Idr) mice.

The bustling mouse (BUS/Idr: bus) is a mutant mouse strain which exhibits deafness, bustling/hyperkinetic behaviour and functional disorders seemingly related to the vestibular system. This phenotype develops in homozygous (bus/bus) mice and has been shown from cross experiments to be genetically induced by a single autosomal recessive gene. We previously detected, with light and electron microscopy, post-natal degeneration of the inner ear sensory cells in homozygotes. In the present study, we examined, by electron microscopy, the development of pathological changes in the sensory epithelia o

Ski sickness.

Dizziness with illusionary rotatory or pendular sensations and dysequilibrium accompanied by nausea and occasionally by vomiting may appear during down-hill skiing. It is proposed that the condition is called "ski sickness". Ski sickness seems to represent a special form of motion sickness produced by unusual and contradictory sensory information between the visual, vestibular and somato-sensory system. The pathophysiology seems to be related to vestibular overstimulation from winding turns on uneven ground, insufficient visual control, specially on foggy days with reduced visibility (on so ca

Valved implants in endolymphatic sac surgery.

This study demonstrates the superiority of a valved implant (Denver-Arenberg valve) over simple sac decompression surgery for Meniere's disease. The valved implant has the advantage of better hearing results. Effectiveness in the relief of vertigo is equal for the two types of procedures. The phenomenon of enhanced high-frequency hearing gain has been observed only with valved implants. Rather spectacular hearing gains in a minority of patients have occurred primarily with the valved implant. Although the numbers are too small to draw any firm conclusions, it would seem that the valved implant

Avulsion rupture of the internal auditory artery during operations in the cerebellopontine angle: a study in monkeys.

The effect of manipulations in the cerebellopontine (CP) angle on the cochlear nerve was studied in 12 rhesus monkeys to elucidate how surgical procedures in the CP angle may affect the peripheral auditory system. Brain stem auditory evoked potentials and compound action potentials from the cochlear nerve were recorded throughout the experiments and were studied to determine the level of injury to the cochlear nerve. After the manipulations, the animals were perfused with fixatives and their temporal bones were removed and examined histologically. The monkeys showed electrophysiological change

Vascular loops in internal auditory canal as possible cause of Menière's disease.

Vascular loops were found in 2 patients diagnosed clinically as having Ménière's disease. A vascular loop was suspected of being present within the internal auditory canal in another patient who complained of tinnitus and vertigo. Diagnosis was performed by air CT cisternography in the former patients and by CT with contrast enhancement in the latter patient. In Case No. 1, the attacks of vertigo disappeared after endolymphatic sac decompression. In Case No. 2, hearing loss progressed despite remission of vertigo. In Case No. 3, the patient had only tinnitus and dizziness. Although it was diff

Post-labyrinthectomy balance compensation influenced by pre-placement of descending medial longitudinal fasciculus lesion.

To characterize the functional role of the descending medial longitudinal fasciculus (d-MLF) in vestibular compensation, vestibulo-ocular and vestibulo-spinal balance functions were studied comparatively in the squirrel monkey. When a unilateral lesion was made on the d-MLF, the animals showed a slight head deviation to the intact side, slight locomotor ataxia and irregular spontaneous nystagmus. About 2 months later, the ipsilateral labyrinthectomy was placed, and the compensatory process was compared between 3 experimentals and 3 controls (labyrinthectomy without pre-lesion). During the acut

Transmastoid labyrinthectomy: surgical management of vertigo in the nonserviceable hearing ear. A five-year experience.

We have continued to employ transmastoid labyrinthectomy since reporting our results for the first 15 patients. Further experience has confirmed our earlier findings that the vestibular system rapidly accommodates to complete unilateral surgical vestibular ablation, regardless of age and vestibular activity of the ear operated upon as measured by bithermal caloric testing. Patients are able to ambulate in one to three days and typically return home three to eight days postoperatively. Only 7 percent of sixty patients retained occasional unsteadiness and only two individuals stated that they su

Endolymphatic duct and sac in patients with Meniere's disease. A temporal bone histopathological study.

The endolymphatic ducts and sacs of 25 temporal bones with idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops from individuals with Meniere's disease were studied and compared with the same number of control bones without endolymphatic hydrops from individuals with no premortem history of otologic disease. The control bones were selected so that the sizes of their vestibular aqueducts matched those temporal bones from individuals with Meniere's disease. The endolymphatic ducts and sacs of all bones were studied by the medial view graphic reconstruction method and/or histological observation under a light micros

Endolymphatic sac surgery for Menière's disease.

An endolymphatic-mastoid Silastic shunt procedure was performed in 122 cases of Menière's disease having a mean follow-up period of three years. In accordance with American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology 1972 criteria, there were 43% class A, 20% class B, 21% class C, and 17% class D results. Analysis of 35 recent cases having a mean follow-up period of nine months revealed 57% class A, 25% class B, 9% class C, and 9% class D results. Sixteen percent of the patients who experienced classes A, B or C results complained of other fluctuating symptoms which were not relieved by surger

The effect of cervical sympathectomy on cochlear electrophysiology.

The purpose of this study was to examine the electrophysiologic responses to sound from guinea pig cochleas, 3--6 days after a unilateral cervical sympathectomy. After recovery from surgery the guinea pigs developed a Horner's syndrome on the sympathectomized side. Some days later their bullas were opened and electrodes were placed bilaterally on the round windows. Most of the sympathectomized cochleas showed signs of decreased sensitivity to sound. They had a smaller dynamic range for the click- and tone-burst evoked compound action potential (CAP) compared with the non-sympathectomized cochl

Perturbation of gastric emptying and duodenal motility through the central nervous system.

This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that external stimuli acting through the central nervous system perturb the normal gastrointestinal response to meals. Thus, in 4 healthy volunteers we used a multilumen gastroduodenal tube system that allowed simultaneous measurements of gastroduodenal motility, gastric emptying rate, gastric acid secretion, and pancreatic trypsin output. Blood pressure, pulse rate, and skin temperature were also monitored for autonomic response. All subjects were studied on 2 days, receiving on each day two identical test meals. After one of the meals on each

[Results of a study of vestibular function and space perception among members of the crew of the first and second "Sal'iut 6" space station expedition].

The results of studies of the vestibular function and spatial perception function in crewmembers of long-term (96- and 140-day) space missions aboard Salyut-6 are presented. Similar changes and individual variations are revealed. All the cosmonauts have shown the following changes: increased reactivity of the otolith organ, decreased sensitivity of the cupular system, asymmetry of most parameters studied, and illusory reactions inflight, individual reactions are as follows: level of changes, dynamics and time of recovery, development of vestibulo-vegetative symptomocomplex during early adaptat

Primary congenital aphakia and the rubella syndrome.

Four embryos from women infected by rubella virus early in pregnancy were investigated histologically. In three of the patients the serological tests were positive; in the fourth the diagnosis of rubella was based solely on the clinical picture. Three of the four embryos showed unilateral severe microphthalmia and primary congenital aphakia. In addition to this defect the right eye of one of the embryos showed a central liquefaction of the lens (cataract). Damage to the internal ear in the form of discontinuities in the epithelium of the cochlear duct were also observed (in two of the three em
