Scrotal rejuvenation encompasses the treatment of scrotal laxity; currently, surgery (scrotoplexy) is the only available treatment; however, the Sutures Can Raise by Orienting Threads in an Upward Manner (SCROTUM) procedure is proposed as a potential nonsurgical treatment for men with a low-hanging scrotum. The procedure utilizes bidirectional, fully absorbable, suspension sutures and cones for the nonsurgical lifting of a sagging scrotum in men with scrotal laxity.

Peripheral nerve disorders are commonly encountered in clinical practice. Electrodiagnostic studies remain the cornerstone of the evaluation of nerve disorders. More recently, ultrasound has played an increasing complementary role in the neuromuscular clinic. Ultrasound elastography is a technique that measures the elastic properties of tissues. Given the histological changes that occur in diseased peripheral nerves, nerve ultrasound elastography has been explored as a noninvasive way to evaluate changes in nerve tissue composition. Studies to date suggest that nerve stiffness tends to increas

Glaucoma represents the main cause of irreversible blindness in the world and for this consideration, the interest in a quick and precise diagnosis and progression of the disease, prior to the appearance of irreversible damage, has been continuously rising. Glaucoma risk factors are already well known, but current studies reveal that it is necessary to make a proper analysis of the intraocular pressure (IOP) to obtain an accurate diagnosis, so we must take into consideration corneal properties that might affect IOP measurements. Starting from corneal geometrical properties represented by centr

Shear-wave (SW) ultrasound elastography is both a clinical and research tool that is increasingly being used to quantify the material properties of muscle. However, how SW velocity relates to stiffness changes on the joint- and musclelevels is poorly understood. Therefore, the purpose of this work was to develop a biomechanical model to estimate plantar flexor muscle stiffness, and measure joint stiffness, joint-based estimates of muscle stiffness, and medial gastrocnemius (MG) SW velocity under different activations (0, 20, and 40%) to quantify the relationships between 1) joint stiffness and

Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) has been introduced for clinical evaluation of liver fibrosis for nearly a decade. MRE has proven to be a robust and accurate technique for diagnosis and staging of liver fibrosis. As clinical experience with MRE grows, the possible role in evaluation of other diffuse and focal disorders of liver is emerging. Stiffness maps provide an opportunity to evaluate mechanical properties within a large volume of liver tissue. This enables appreciation of spatial heterogeneity of stiffness. Stiffness maps may reveal characteristic and differentiating features of ch

OBJECTIVES: To assess the performance of sonoelastography for differential diagnosis between malignant and benign parotid lesions using a meta-analysis.
METHODS: An independent literature search of English medical databases, such as PubMed, Embase and Medline ( Embase.com ), Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Ovid was performed. The diagnostic accuracy of sonoelastography was compared with that of histopathology and/or cytology, which was used as reference standard. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) and area under the curve (AUC) were calculated to evaluate th

Liver elastography is a noninvasive method for diagnosing fibrosis that has been developed over the last decade in response to the limitations of liver biopsies, blood markers, and traditional imaging modalities. There are different methods of measuring tissue stiffness through ultrasound; thus far, shear wave elastography has proven superior for diagnosing clinically significant liver fibrosis, where early detection modifies the approach to treatment and improves prognosis. This article aims to provide a brief review of the different methods for performing elastography with ultrasound, focusi

Hedgehogs are agile climbers, scaling trees and plants to heights exceeding 10m while foraging insects. Hedgehog spines (a.k.a. quills) prov … as pliable as styrene rods with a slightly larger diameter. This unique combination of strength and elasticity makes hedgehog spines exemplary shock absorbers, and a suitable reference model for biomimicry.

Liver biopsy, which was traditionally considered to be the gold standard for the staging of fibrosis, has been challenged in the past decade by non-invasive techniques. These techniques rely on two distinct but complementary approaches: a 'biological' approach, based on the quantification of biomarkers of fibrosis in serum, and a 'physical' approach, based on the measurement of liver stiffness using elastography-based technologies. Advantages of serum biomarkers include their high applicability (>95%) and good reproducibility. However, as none are liver specific their results can be influenced

We hypothesize that dissipation of mechanical energy of external impact to absorb mechanical shock is a fundamental function of skeletal muscle in addition to its primary function to convert chemical energy into mechanical energy. In physical systems, the common mechanism for absorbing mechanical shock is achieved with the use of both elastic and viscous elements and we hypothesize that the viscosity of the skeletal muscle is a variable parameter which can be voluntarily controlled by changing the tension of the contracting muscle. We further hypothesize that an ability of muscle to absorb sho
