Malignant transformation of mouse M2-fibroblasts by glycerol chlorohydrines contained in protein hydrolysates and commercial food.

Glycerol chlorohydrines, such as 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol and 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol, are present in commercial protein hydrolysates used for human nutrition. These compounds are genotoxic and 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol induced tumors in rats. Now it is reported that both compounds are active at inducing malignant transformation of mouse fibroblasts. Therefore, the carcinogenic risk to humans by exposure to these compounds contained in food is of concern. The investigation of the in vivo carcinogenic potential of 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol is urgently required to further evaluate the carcinogenic

Emporiatrics: diarrhea in travelers.

The degree of discomfort and inconvenience caused by travelers' diarrhea highlights the need to prepare the international traveler thoroughly. In addition to observing food and water precautions, most travelers should carry antibiotics and antimotility agents to be started if diarrhea occurs. Used judiciously, these precautions may prevent an unplanned tour of bathrooms and outhouses in foreign countries.

[Infections by enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC): a clinical and microbiologic problem and a challenge for the public health service].

Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) is the cause of haemorrhagic colitis which may be complicated by subsequent haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), thrombotic-thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), and neurologic disorders. The organisms produce at least three biochemically and immunologically distinct cytotoxins which are designated as Shiga-like (SLT) or verotoxins and which are identified by immunological methods, cell culture tests, or gene-probes. According to present knowledge infections are primarily caused by consumption of contaminated milk and meat products and secondarily during outb

Experimental lead toxicosis in ponies: comparison of the effects of smelter effluent-contaminated hay and lead acetate.

Grass hay produced in the Coeur d'Alene River Basin of northern Idaho was fed to a group of 4 ponies. The hay contained Pb in concentration of 423 +/- 82 mg/kg and Cd in concentration of 10.8 +/- 1.4 mg/kg, resulting in daily exposures of the ponies to approximately 7.4 mg of Pb/kg and 0.19 mg of Cd/kg/day. The results in this group of ponies were compared with those from a group fed noncontaminated grass hay and given a daily dose of 10 mg of Pb/kg of body weight, in the form of lead acetate. Clinical toxicologic signs, hematologic changes, and blood and tissue Pb concentrations were similar

Mass poisoning in cattle, palm doves and mink caused by the coccidiostat dibutyltin dilaurate.

Poisoning caused by dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTD) was diagnosed in cattle, mink, and palm doves. The accidental addition of a DBTD premix to calf concentrates at levels up to 25000 ppm on 18 farms caused poisoning in 1000 cattle, of which 171 died and 287 were slaughtered. High concentrations of tin were found in the cattle tissues and precluded their consumption by humans. Palm doves ingesting concentrates containing 12500 ppm DBTD on one farm were also poisoned and had high concentrations of tin in tissues. Mink were inadvertently fed a vitamin-mineral supplement containing about 1700 ppm DBTD

[Lead in the organs and tissues of slaughter cattle as a result of environmental pollution].

The normal values of lead in the organs and tissues of clinically healthy slaughter cattle were determined by the method of atomic absorption spectrophotometry and by the polarographic method. Animals of various age categories came from several farms of the East-Slovakian region. The lead found in the liver of young fattened cattle was not determined polarographically, since its concentration was under the threshold of sensitivity of the method (1.0 ppm). In the older category of animals (4-16 years old dairy cows) the following lead levels were revealed by the method of atomic absorption spec

Sanitation of medical cannabis flowers (Cannabis sativa L., flos): comparing current technologies and non-thermal plasma novelties from safety and quality perspectives.

The use of cannabis in medicine has rich historical roots spanning thousands of years before stigmatism surrounding the narcotic use of this plant led to strict regulations on its use. Recently, medicinal and recreational cannabis use has experienced a resurgence in many regions of the world, receiving attention from society and policy as legalization increases availability and necessity of greater mindfulness. Research on cannabis is gaining more traction to better inform the regulations needed to ensure the safe and effective usage of this drug. Owing to cannabis being a natural plant produc

Occurrence, antimicrobial resistance, and whole-genome characterization of Salmonella in retail eggs in the United Arab Emirates: Evidence of a clonal dominance of serovar Braenderup.

Salmonella contamination of table eggs remains a significant food safety concern globally; however, data from the Middle East are limited. This study provides the first baseline assessment of the occurrence, antimicrobial resistance, and genomic characteristics of Salmonella recovered from retail table eggs in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). A total of 380 retail egg packs (12 eggs per pack; 4560 eggs) were collected from supermarkets in three major cities. From each pack, pooled eggshells and egg contents were analyzed separately for Salmonella detection. Salmonella was detected in 37 of 380

Virulence determinants and toxin profile of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus from commercial cheese in Bangladesh: A public health risk.

Cheese, a widely consumed dairy product, can be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a pathogen capable of producing toxins harmful to humans. Of particular concern is Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus (MRSA), which harbors antimicrobial resistance genes and secretes super-antigenic toxins. Present investigation aimed at determining the occurrence and characterizing MRSA in commercial cheese, to evaluate its potential public health risks. 120 cheese samples representing twelve commercial brands were collected in ten different batches over a six-month period in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

Novel dual-gene target and probe-based real-time PCR for the detection and differentiation of Salmonella Dublin.

Salmonella enterica serovar Dublin (S. Dublin) is a host-adapted cattle pathogen that causes systemic disease, chronic carriage, and environmental contamination. Early detection of subclinical infections remains challenging due to low bacterial loads and the limitations of conventional diagnostics. We developed a duplex TaqMan real-time PCR assay targeting a chromosomal locus (SeD_A1104) and a plasmid-encoded gene (vagD). The assay demonstrated strong linearity (R² > 0.99) with amplification efficiencies of 91%-102% and detection limits as low as 1.9 × 10¹ genome copies per reaction. Specifici
