A representative sample of 285 70-year-old Danish women were examined by case history, 125I photon absorptiometry of both forearms (BMC), and lateral X-rays of the spine. Fat mass was calculated from height (H), weight (W) and estimated lean body mass (LBM) as W-LBM/H kg m-1. Seventy-five participants with previous or present disease or treatment known to influence the calcium metabolism were excluded. The remaining 210 women included the final study groups of seventy-seven long-term smokers and 103 non-smokers. Within both groups BMC correlated positively to fat mass, r = 0.447 and 0.560, res…

Familial mesomelic dwarfism was first described in 1944 by K. NIEVERGELT, who reported on a father and 3 sons by 3 different mothers who had … lly shaped elbow joints, subluxations of the radial head and a deficient supination capacity of the forearm were diagnosed. The deformities were nearly symmetrical, but a slight predilection for the left forearm was noted. In the lower extremities atypical club-feet with supination of the forefeet, shortening of tibia and fibula and marked synostosis of t …

Nine patients are described with unilateral wasting of the hand muscles associated with elongated C7 transverse processes or with rudimentary cervical ribs. In three patients there was selective wasting of the lateral part of the thenar pad, accompanied by mild weakness of the other hand muscles. In four patients all the hand muscles were wasted, but this was more marked in the lateral part of the thenar pad than elsewhere. In two patients wasting was uniformly distributed throughout the hand. Weakness and wasting in the forearm was only present in four patients and was relatively mild. Sensor…

Congenital infantile fibrosarcoma (CIF) is a rare prenatal malignant tumour that occurs in infants and can be difficult to distinguish from vascular malformation or haemangiomas. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for saving both limb and life. We report a 4-month-old infant with CIF of the left forearm and arm which presented with a bleeding ulcer over the swelling. During admission, the child developed disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) necessitating a life-saving above-elbow amputation. Level of Evidence: Level V (Therapeutic).

Awareness of unique path of the superficial branch of the radial nerve and its unusual sensory distribution can help avoid potential diagnostic confusion. We present a unique case encountered during a routine dissection of a Central European male cadaver. An unusual course of the superficial branch of the radial nerve was found in the right forearm, where the superficial branch of the radial nerve originated from the radial nerve distally, within the supinator canal, emerged between the extensor digitorum and abductor pollicis longus muscles and supplied the second and a radial half of the thi…

Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a chronic inflammatory dermatosis primarily affecting the genitalia, commonly characterized by pearly-white papules and plaques. Although predominantly affecting females, LS can manifest across all age groups, with a bimodal distribution observed in prepubescent girls and postmenopausal women. This case report presents an unusual instance of exclusive extragenital LS in a 10-year-old girl, showcasing hyperpigmented patches and wrinkled plaques resembling lichen planus on her forearms and lower legs. Histopathological analysis confirmed LS, revealing distinctive epiderm…

Intra- and internerve CSA variability were defined as maximal CSA/minimal CSA for each nerve and each sub …

The two main branches of the radial nerve (RN) are the deep branch (DBRN) and the superficial branch (SBRN). The RN splits into two main branches at the elbow. The DBRN runs between the deep and shallow layers of the supinator. The DBRN can be easily compressed at the arcade of Frohse (AF) due to its anatomical features. This work focuses on a 42-year-old male patient who had injured his left forearm 1 month prior. Multiple muscles of the forearm (extensor digitorum, extensor digiti minimi, and extensor carpi ulnaris) were sutured in another hospital. After that, he had dorsiflexion limitation…

BACKGROUNDS: The goals of this study were to (1) compare the effect of casting technique on biomechanical function with different casting materials and different cast core diameters, and (2) compare the strength of a cast based on the number of layers in relation to the core diameter.
METHODS: Two standardized cylindrical cast model sizes were used to simulate forearm and short leg casts (core diameter: 60 mm, 100 mm) with 2 different casting techniques (non-smoothing vs. smoothing with lamination), utilizing 2 casting materials [fiberglass and Plaster of Paris (POP)]. Each cast was created u…

Hourglass-like constriction (HLC) is an uncommon spontaneous mononeuropathy that is typically characterised by a sudden onset of pain followed by palsy, affecting branches of the radial (posterior interosseous nerve) and median nerves (anterior interosseous nerve). HLC of the radial nerve (RN) is rare, with only a few reported cases. Here, we report a case of a man who presented with acute wrist and finger drop due to the HLC of the RN. Surgery was recommended 5 months after clinical observation, when the lesion was resected and primarily repaired, resulting in satisfactory recovery. There is

Various surgical techniques exist to treat de Quervain's stenosing tendovaginitis. Specific surgical techniques for de Quervain's are designed to avoid complications including injury to branches of the superficial branch of the radial nerve, inadequate decompression, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, and palmar subluxation of the released tendons. A simple dorsal incision through the extensor retinaculum is advocated by many as a means to release the compartment while preventing postoperative subluxation. A single incision through the retinaculum limits exposure of the compartment and could lead t

De Quervain's tenosynovitis involves the first of the six dorsal compartments of the wrist, which contains the abductor pollicis longus (APL) and extensor pollicis brevis (EPB) tendons. It seems to be associated with female sex (F:M = 10:1), middle age (30-50 years) and activities involving repetitive hand and wrist motions such as typing, piano playing or repetitively lifting children head, such as in postpartum females (hence the term "baby wrist" or "mommy wrist"). Aim of this paper was to illustrate high-resolution ultrasound (US) features of the DQD by describing a well-documented case th

AIM: To review the clinical features of brachial synovial cyst.
METHOD: A case of bilateral brachial synovial cysts is described in a child suffering from systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis during a relapse. Magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasonography were conducted to further evaluate the nature of the cysts. The case is compared with known cases in a literature review.
RESULTS: Review of the literature showed that brachial synovial cysts occur most commonly in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis. It is considered that uncontrolled systemic inflammation and recurrent disease activ

Hydroa vaccinforme-like lymphoproliferative disorder (HVLPD) is a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder driven by the Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV). It was initially designated under the 2008 WHO classification of tumors of hematopoietic and lymphoid tissues as a distinct entity but has been recently reclassified as a lymphoproliferative disorder under the 2016 revision of the 2008 WHO classification of lymphoid malignancies. HVLPD mainly affects Asian, Central, and South American children. It is rarely seen in adults. Although HVLPD may initially be limited to cutaneous involvement and run an i

BACKGROUND: Anatomical variations in the first extensor compartment are associated with the pathogenesis of de Quervain's disease. Here, we report two novel anatomical variations of the first extensor compartment.
METHODS: The wrists of two adult cadavers were dissected to reveal the anatomical variations in the first extensor compartment.
RESULTS: In one of the cadavers, no septum was present in the first extensor compartment. However, the extensor pollicis brevis tendon and its proximal muscle belly were absent. The abductor pollicis longus (APL) tendon had multiple slips, and one of them
