In the conventional view, the winter adaptation of membrane lipids is induced by temperature decrease. We propose that winter remodelling of membranes in Pyrrhocoris apterus is triggered by short-day photoperiod before the temperature decrease and changes caused by cold temperature represent the later phase of adaptation. We previously developed a homoharringtonine resistant C-1300 neuroblastoma cell line with cross-resistance to adriamycin and increased levels of p-glycoprotein, and showed that drug resistance could be reversed in this cell line by cyclosporin A. The present study shows that cremophor EL, a parenteral vehicle for cyclosporin A, can also completely reverse this multidrug resistance in a clonogenic assay system. Postoperative catabolic state of metabolism represents a danger for patients in regard to protein degradation. As postoperative nutrition seems already quite optimal, we examined if anaesthesia, predominantly peridural anaesthesia, would be able to reduce postaggressive metabolism. 20 patients with gastrectomy or subtotal gastric resection were randomized either for a combined anaesthesia with PDA and intubation or for balanced fentanyl analgesia. In both groups the typical characteristics of postaggressive metabolism could be demonstrated without any difference.
