[Are pyrethroids harmless? Evaluation of experimental data].

Pyrethroids are synthetic insecticides which world-wide increasingly replace DDT, Lindane, Organophosphate-pesticides etc. in fields like agriculture, hygienics, household, wear- and building industry. Being lipophilic and strongly neurotoxic substances, a considerable health risk has been predicted in regard of pyrethroid applications. On the other hand the published experimental data are often interpreted as proof of a small, calculable and, therefore, controllable risk. The present paper attempts to specify the reasons for these contrary judgements with regard to the pyrethroid effects. Sin…

Interactions of neurotoxicants with neurotransmitter systems.

Many neurotoxic compounds have been shown to interfere with neurotransmission both in vitro and following acute and chronic administration. … following acute or chronic administration, is represented by the organophosphates. Organophosphorus insecticides owe their acute toxicity to inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and accumulation of acetylcholine at cholinergic receptors. Chronic exposure to these compounds results in the development of tolerance to their toxicity which is associated with a decre …

The etiology of arthrogryposis (multiple congenital contracture).

In laboratory animals, prenatal contractures have been induced by viruses, neuromuscular blocking agents, toxins, insecticides, hyperthermia, and limb immobilization. In agricultural animals, prenatal contractures are related to pregnant animals foraging on plants containing toxic alkaloids. Epizootics of prenatal contractures in cattle have been related to Akabane viral infections, which can now be prevented by vaccination. Human arthrogryposis (multiple congenital contracture) may occur in any synovial joint in a large variety of combinations. Several lethal syndromes commonly associated wit…

Correlation of occupation and karyotype in adults with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia.

Seventy-four adult patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL) were classified retrospectively as to whether or not they had had occupational exposure to insecticides, chemicals and solvents, or petroleum products. Fifty-eight patients were considered nonexposed and 16 were considered exposed. The chromosome banding pattern was abnormal in 37 of the 74 patients (50%). Twenty-five of the 58 (43%) nonexposed patients had a clonal chromosome abnormality, compared with 12 of the 16 (75%) exposed patients (p = 0.02). Only 2 of 23 (8.7%) females with an abnormal karyotype were exposed, wherea…

Epidemiological patterns of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Panama. II. Incidental occurrence of cases in non-endemic settlements.

Epidemiological studies on cutaneous leishmaniasis were carried out in a settlement in the Bayano region, Republic of Panama, during 1971-72 … an cutaneous leishmaniasis in Panama. The extensive pasture, together with periodic applications of insecticides in the houses by the antimalarial agency in this country, provided an effective barrier against transmission within the settlement itself. However, both humans and dogs acquired the disease during excursions into the surrounding forest. No new cases …

Polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan biofilm incorporated with moringa oil nanoparticles: a sustainable and ecofriendly packaging strategy for managing Tribolium confusum infestation.

The development of a novel anti-stored grain pest membrane film of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan-moringa nanoemulsion (PVA/CS-MNE) biofilm offers a promising alternative to conventional cereal packaging materials. The efficacy of different packaging films and thicknesses: polyethelene, cellophane, polypropylene, paper bags, and a prepared PVA/chitosan biofilm was evaluated for the control of Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) adults. The estimated LC50 values for surface-treated PVA/chitosan biofilm, cellophane, polyethelene, paper bag, and polypropylene with moringa

Permethrin in companion animals: Mechanistic neurotoxicity, dermal pharmacokinetics, and secondary exposure pathways.

Permethrin remains one of the most widely used pyrethroids in companion animal ectoparasite control, yet its toxicological profile reflects a complex interplay between mechanism of action, dermal delivery, formulation behaviour and secondary exposure. Its primary activity is mediated through state-dependent modification of voltage-gated sodium channels, resulting in delayed channel deactivation/inactivation, repetitive firing and excitatory neurotoxicity. While this mechanism underpins insecticidal and repellent efficacy, it also explains adverse effects in non-target species. Following topica

Using sound to detect Formica rufa behavioural changes to a common pesticide.

Soil-dwelling insects may be at particularly high risk of exposure to pesticides because soils are a major recipient of these chemicals. Still, we lack non-invasive techniques to detect in situ responses of soil macrofauna to pesticides and other contaminants. Here, we test if sound recordings can reveal sub-lethal behavioural shifts in ant colonies caused by a neonicotinoid (imidacloprid). We demonstrate that an acoustic variable can detect pesticide-induced shifts in outdoor behaviours (increased activity) of red wood ants (Formica rufa). This behaviour shift was observed at environmentally

Protective effects of rosmarinic acid against carbaryl-exposed toxicity in honey bees (Apis mellifera): histopathological and molecular docking evidence.

This study aimed to evaluate the potential protective role of Rosmarinic acid (RA) against Carbaryl (CRB)-induced toxicity in honey bees by assessing survival, nutrient uptake, and intestinal tissue integrity , while exploring potential CYP-mediated detoxification mechanisms via complementary in silico modelling. Honey bees were divided into six experimental groups: CRB-1, CRB-2, CRB-1 + RA, CRB-2 + RA, RA-only, and control, and treatments were administered for three days. Results showed a 100% mortality rate in the groups treated with high doses of CRB alone or in combination with RA. In cont

Chronic health effects of recurrent indoor Pyrethroid exposure in enclosed workplaces: an occupational exposome-based clinical review in the context of limited safety guidance.

Pyrethroid insecticides are widely used indoors in residential, commercial, and occupational pest-control settings and are generally regarded as safe because of their relatively low acute toxicity. This perception is largely based on short-term exposure data and application practices conducted under well-ventilated conditions. However, indoor pesticide application does not always occur in environments that allow for rapid residue clearance. In enclosed workplaces-particularly those with centralized heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, limited fresh-air exchange, and dust-retaini…

Impulsive intervention strategies for temperature and rainfall-dependent visceral leishmaniasis transmission dynamics.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) remains a lethal parasitic disease, disproportionately affecting resource-limited regions where sustained control measures are often economically and logistically impractical. Consequently, cost-effective and sustainable strategies tailored to seasonal transmission patterns are urgently needed. Because temperature and rainfall strongly influence sandfly populations, aligning control efforts with seasonal transmission dynamics may enhance effectiveness while reducing costs. This study proposes an impulsive control strategy within a temperature- and rainfall-dependent

Insights on the translocation, metabolism, and subcellular distribution of mandipropamid enantiomers in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) and the effect of cultivation condition and heavy metal lead (Pb).

The fate of pesticides within crops is a critical determinant of environmental risk, influenced by various factors such as cultivation conditions and exogenous substances, which necessitate thorough investigation. This study examines the translocation, subcellular distribution, and metabolism of mandipropamid in spinach under different cultivation conditions and lead (Pb) stress. The pesticide is absorbed by roots (bioconcentration factors >1) and transported upward via symplast (high Kpw values in fresh roots), with limited downward translocation (translocation factors <1, αpt > 1). Cell wall

Time to loss of physical integrity of attractive targeted sugar bait (ATSB) stations in Western Province, Zambia: a survival analysis.

BACKGROUND: Attractive targeted sugar baits (ATSBs) are a potential addition to an integrated vector management strategy against malaria. ATSB stations, which include a sugar bait and an ingestion toxicant, could potentially be deployed to attract-and-kill mosquitoes and thereby prevent malaria transmission. The physical durability of these stations is likely to be an important factor in decisions around future use strategies. This study measured the duration of physical integrity of the ATSB Sarabi v1.2 stations used in Western Zambia, as part of a Phase III cluster RCT. METHODS: ATSB statio

Development of Metal-Organic Framework-Based Emamectin Benzoate Nanopesticides for Effective Control of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus.

Pine wilt disease is caused by Bursaphelenchus xylophilus invasion and has a great impact on global pine resources. Injection of emamectin benzoate (EB) into pine trunks is an effective way to control B. xylophilus. However, EB has limited aqueous solubility, easily photodissociates, and its long-term use causes resistance problems. In this study, the metal-organic framework material ZIF-8 was prepared, and EB was loaded onto ZIF-8 through physical adsorption, resulting in a pH-responsive EB@ZIF-8 nanopesticide with a high drug loading rate (36.04%). Simulated release experiments of EB@ZIF-8 u

Towards NAM-based risk assessment for developmental neurotoxic effects, illustrated with chlorpyrifos.

New approach methodologies (NAMs), such as in vitro and in silico methods, provide opportunities to replace, reduce, and refine animal studies for chemical risk assessment, decrease experimental lead time, and increase predictivity for human health. However, starting from or including NAMs introduces uncertainties that need to be addressed and quantified to work towards regulatory implementation of NAMs within risk assessment. A theoretical risk assessment based on the developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) of chlorpyrifos and its active metabolite chlorpyrifos-oxon was performed to highlight imp

Comparing the effects of verbenone, methyl salicylate, and permethrin on attacks of ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae Scolytinae) in ornamental nurseries.

The granulate ambrosia beetle, Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky), and the black stem borer, Xylosandrus germanus (Blandford) are important pests in ornamental nurseries in the eastern USA. These beetles are managed mainly using preventative trunk applications of pyrethroids, such as permethrin or bifenthrin when females typically fly out of woodlots and attack young trees in the spring. Verbenone and methyl salicylate are potential phytochemicals reported as repellants but not completely validated in ornamental nurseries for ambrosia beetle management as an alternative option. Thus, this

A costing analysis of an intermittent biolarviciding intervention with limited epidemiological effect in Tanga Region, Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Malaria vector control strategies in sub-Saharan Africa have largely relied on the use of Insecticide Treated-mosquito Nets and Indoor Residual Spraying. However, after substantial reductions in malaria burden associated with the scale-up of these interventions, little progress has been achieved over the last decade. With the increase in insecticide resistance and outdoor biting of mosquitoes, larviciding offers the possibility to be an additional malaria control tool. This study is part of a comprehensive evaluation and aimed to assess prospectively the financial cost of a large-s

Human and vector behavioural determinants of malaria transmission in the Nandi highlands, western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Malaria transmission, characterized by spatial and temporal heterogeneity and complex vector behaviours, persists in Kenya's highlands despite widespread use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). The role of human activity in exposure risk remains underexplored. Identifying vulnerable times and locations is crucial for designing and optimizing targeted control strategies that address the intricate interplay between human activity and local vector behaviour that results in transmission. This study examined human-mosquito interactions in three different ecological settings in Na
