Postbiotics from Lactobacillus delbrueckii Alleviate Intestinal Inflammation by Promoting the Expansion of Intestinal Stem Cells in S. Typhimurium-Induced Mice.

Previous studies have demonstrated that L. delbrueckii plays beneficial roles in modulating the gut microbiota, enhancing the intestinal barrier, and promoting animal growth. Postbiotics have a similar or even superior effect in protecting intestinal health compared to probiotics due to their excellent stability, extended shelf life, and safety. However, the protective effects and underlying mechanism of postbiotics from L. delbrueckii in intestinal inflammation remain unclear. In this study, we demonstrated the beneficial impact of postbiotics from L. delbrueckii on intestinal health by estab

Nitric oxide protects intestinal mucosal barrier function and prevents acute graft rejection after intestinal transplantation: A mini-review.

Intestinal transplantation is a complex technical procedure that provides patients suffering from end-stage intestinal failure an opportunity to enjoy improved quality of life, nutrition and survival. Compared to other types of organ transplants, it is a relatively new advancement in the field of organ transplantation. Nevertheless, great advances have been made over the past few decades to the present era, including the use of ischemic preconditioning, gene therapy, and addition of pharmacological supplements to preservation solutions. However, despite these strides, intestinal transplantatio

Glutamine boosts intestinal stem cell-mediated small intestinal epithelial development during early weaning: Involvement of WNT signaling.

Early weaning usually causes small intestine epithelial development abnormality, increasing the risk of gastrointestinal diseases. Glutamine (Gln), enriching in plasma and milk, is widely reported to benefit intestinal health. However, whether Gln affects intestinal stem cell (ISC) activity in response to early weaning is unclear. Here, both the early weaning mice and intestinal organoids were used to study the role of Gln in regulating ISC activities. Results showed that Gln ameliorated early weaning-induced epithelial atrophy and augmented the ISC-mediated epithelial regeneration. Gln depriv

Effects of fermented rapeseed meal on performance, intestinal morphology, the viscosity of intestinal content, phosphorus availability, and egg quality of laying hens.

Fermented rapeseed meal has the potential to partial replace soybean meal in feed mixtures for poultry without a negative impact on the health condition and performance of birds. This is due to the fact that the fermentation process can reduce the amount of antinutritional factors, improve the use of nutrients and impart probiotic properties to rapeseed meal. Therefore, this study was undertaken to investigate the effect of fermented rapeseed meal on the performance, egg quality, intestinal morphometry, the viscosity of intestinal content and total phosphorus availability. Impact of a 24 h feed withdrawal on active nutrient transport, intestinal morphology, and gene expression in the equine small and large intestine.

Horses are often subjected to short-term feed withdrawal (FW) pre- or post-surgery to reduce anesthetic complications. However, removing nutrients from the intestinal lumen may negatively impact intestinal health. Thirteen horses were used to determine the effects of a 24 h FW on gut barrier function, active nutrient transport, transporter gene expression, and intestinal morphology. Following 0 or 24 h FW (0FW or 24FW, respectively), horses were euthanized via overdose of sodium pentobarbital and sodium phenytoin, and segments of proximal jejunum (PJ), mid jejunum (MJ), ileum (Il), and right v

Profiling intestinal stem and proliferative cells in the small intestine of broiler chickens via in situ hybridization during the peri-hatch period.

Mature small intestines have crypts populated by stem cells which produce replacement cells to maintain the absorptive villus surface area. The embryonic crypt is rudimentary and cells along the villi are capable of proliferation. By 7 d post-hatch the crypts are developed and are the primary sites of proliferation. Research characterizing the proliferative expansion of the small intestine during the peri-hatch period is lacking. The objective of this study was to profile the changes of genes that are markers of stem cells and proliferation: Olfactomedin 4 (Olfm4), Leucine-rich repeat containi…

Intestinal Reg4 deficiency confers susceptibility to high-fat diet-induced liver steatosis by increasing intestinal fat absorption in mice.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Regenerating gene family member 4 (REG4) is a novel marker for enteroendocrine cells and is selectively expressed in specialised enteroendocrine cells of the small intestine. However, the exact roles of REG4 are largely unknown. In this study we investigate the effects of REG4 on the development of dietary fat-dependent liver steatosis and the mechanisms involved. METHODS: Mice with intestinal-specific Reg4 deficiency (Reg4 ΔIEC ) and Reg4-floxed alleles (Reg4 fl/fl ) were generated to investigate the effects of Reg4 on diet-induced obesity and liver steatosis. Serum levels

Effect of intestinal microbiota on liver disease and its related future prospection: From the perspective of intestinal barrier damage and microbial metabolites.

Liver diseases contribute notably to the global concern of mortality and disease. Emerging evidence has demonstrated that intestinal microbiota can regulate intestinal barrier function and produce bioactive metabolites. Failure of any aspect of this barrier can result in the translocation of microbes into the blood and a sustained inflammatory response that promotes liver injury, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Here, we review the mechanisms by that intestinal microbiota regulate the intestinal barrier. The multiple underlying mechanisms of intestinal microbiota in liver disease are elaborated in det

Determination of Two Differently Manufactured Silicon Dioxide Nanoparticles by Cloud Point Extraction Approach in Intestinal Cells, Intestinal Barriers and Tissues.

Food additive amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO2) particles are manufactured by two different methods-precipitated and fumed procedures-which can induce different physicochemical properties and biological fates. In this study, precipitated and fumed SiO2 particles were characterized in terms of constituent particle size, hydrodynamic diameter, zeta potential, surface area, and solubility. Their fates in intestinal cells, intestinal barriers, and tissues after oral administration in rats were determined by optimizing Triton X-114-based cloud point extraction (CPE). The results demonstrate that the

QTL Mapping of Intestinal Neutrophil Variation in Threespine Stickleback Reveals Possible Gene Targets Connecting Intestinal Inflammation and Systemic Health.

Selection, via host immunity, is often required to foster beneficial microbial symbionts and suppress deleterious pathogens. In animals, the host immune system is at the center of this relationship. Failed host immune system-microbial interactions can result in a persistent inflammatory response in which the immune system indiscriminately attacks resident microbes, and at times the host cells themselves, leading to diseases such as Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn's Disease, and Psoriasis. Host genetic variation has been linked to both microbiome diversity and to severity of such inflammatory disease
