A critical review of incobotulinumtoxinA in the treatment of chronic sialorrhea in pediatric patients.

INTRODUCTION: Sialorrhea, also known as hypersalivation, ptyalis, or drooling, results in physical and psychosocial complications that may have a significant negative impact on quality of life for both the patient and their caregiver. The goal of pharmacological treatment is to reduce excessive salivary flow, while maintaining a moist and healthy oral cavity; until recently, however, few of the agents used to treat chronic sialorrhea have been approved in pediatric patients. AREAS COVERED: This article summarizes early evidence for the use of botulinum neurotoxin A formulations in the treatme

Hematological immune related adverse events after treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors.

INTRODUCTION: With the increasing use of checkpoint inhibitors, rare immune-related adverse events (irAE) are being identified. Haematological irAE (hem-irAE) are difficult to treat and have shown high mortality rates. In order to improve side-effect management for these potentially life-threatening events, we analysed frequency, severity and outcomes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients who developed hem-irAE while being treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) therapy were retrospectively identified from 18 international cancer centres. RESULTS: In total, more than 7626 patients treated

Solar Irradiance Changes and Phytoplankton Productivity in Earth's Ocean Following Astrophysical Ionizing Radiation Events.

Two atmospheric responses to simulated astrophysical ionizing radiation events significant to life on Earth are production of odd-nitrogen species, especially NO2, and subsequent depletion of stratospheric ozone. Ozone depletion increases incident short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation (UVB, 280-315 nm) and longer (>600 nm) wavelengths of photosynthetically available radiation (PAR, 400-700 nm). On the other hand, the NO2 haze decreases atmospheric transmission in the long-wavelength UVA (315-400 nm) and short-wavelength PAR. Here, we use the results of previous simulations of incident spectra

Differences in the Adverse Event Burden of Corticosteroid Use in Inflammatory Bowel Disease as Reported Between Adverse Event Reporting Systems and a Patient Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Corticosteroids are widely used in managing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). While adverse events (AEs) of corticosteroids are well recognized, current understanding of corticosteroid-related AE burden in IBD remains incomplete. METHODS: AE reports for prednisone/prednisolone and budesonide were extracted from the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) and VigiBase databases. Total and frequently reported AEs were tabulated, and AEs of special interest were compared with reports for all drugs using proportional reporting ratio criteria. Datab

Longitudinal characterization of nasopharyngeal colonization with Streptococcus pneumoniae in a South African birth cohort post 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine implementation.

Monitoring changes in pneumococcal carriage is key to understanding vaccination-induced shifts in the ecology of carriage and impact on health. We longitudinally investigated pneumococcal carriage dynamics in infants. Pneumococcal isolates were obtained from nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs collected 2-weekly from 137 infants enrolled from birth through their first year of life. Pneumococci were serotyped by sequetyping, confirmed by Quellung. Pneumococci were isolated from 54% (1809/3331) of infants. Median time to first acquisition was 63 days. Serotype-specific acquisition rates ranged from 0.01 t

Life-long coping patterns and bio-psycho-social predictors of individual responses to the COVID-19 pandemic-protocol of the Rostock Longitudinal Study (ninth wave).

BACKGROUND: When faced with adversity and negative life events, such as infection with coronavirus or restrictive measures regarding COVID-19, individuals tend to rely on the same coping strategies they have already employed in the past. However, habitual coping measures vary greatly between people. Differences in dealing with challenging situations may depend on life-long coping experiences and a wide range of bio-psycho-social influences. The major goal of this study is to detect persisting patterns of coping which in turn may predict how individuals have handled the challenges of the COVID-

The Role of Early Life Stress in HPA Axis and Anxiety.

Substantial evidence from various studies suggests a preeminent role for early adverse experiences in the development of psychopathology. The most recent studies reviewed here suggest that early life stressors are associated with an increased risk for anxiety disorders in adulthood. Early life stress predisposes individuals to develop a number of psychiatric syndromes, particularly affective disorders, including anxiety disorders, and is therefore a significant health problem. This review examines the emerging literature on the relationship between stress, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) a

In-utero exposure to bereavement and offspring IQ: a Danish national cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Intelligence is a life-long trait that has strong influences on lifestyle, adult morbidity and life expectancy. Hence, lower cognitive abilities are therefore of public health interest. Our primary aim was to examine if prenatal bereavement measured as exposure to death of a close family member is associated with the intelligence quotient (IQ) scores at 18-years of age of adult Danish males completing a military cognitive screening examination. METHODS: We extracted records for the Danish military screening test and found kinship links with biological parents, siblings, and matern
