Knowledge Assessment of COVID-19 Symptoms: Gender Differences and Communication Routes for the Generation Z Cohort.

This paper explores the generation Z (Gen Z) cohort's self-assessed knowledge regarding the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) symptoms as well as their interest in acquiring information and learning more about the transmission and spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2 virus) and the COVID-19 symptoms. Additionally, it investigates gender differences in self-assessed knowledge of COVID-19 symptoms. Field research employing a nonprobability sampling method with an online questionnaire resulted in collecting 762 valid questionnaires. Data analysis included de

Thoracoabdominal Compression Model of Traumatic Asphyxia to Identify Mechanisms of Respiratory Failure in Fatal Crowd Accidents.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic asphyxia is a major cause of death in fatal crowd disasters, but the relationships between compression site, load magn … emained constant. CONCLUSIONS: In women, respiratory failure can occur within 1 h from respiratory muscle fatigue, even when total thoracoabdominal load is only about 60% of body weight. A vital capacity ≤1.85 L and modified Borg scale score ≥8.3 can be regarded as indices for predicting respiratory failure.

Changes in the expression of worries, anxiety, and generalized anxiety disorder with increasing age: A population study of 70 to 85-year-olds.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is supposed to decrease with age. Reasons suggested include that emotional control increases and that anxiety and worry are expressed differently in older adults. The aim of this study was to examine how the expression of anxiety and worry changes with age and how this influences diagnoses in current classification systems. METHOD: Semistructured psychiatric examinations were performed in population-based samples of 70- (n = 562), 75- (n = 770), 79/80- (n = 603), and 85-year-olds (n = 433). Treatment of experimental autoimmune myasthenia gravis rats with FTY720 and its effect on Th1/Th2 cells.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neurological disease that is characterized by the expression of anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies. The immune response at AChRs of neuromuscular junction is disrupted in patients with MG, which manifests as skeletal muscle fatigue and is aggravated following periods of activity and alleviated following rest. Although a novel immune suppressant FTY720 drug, which exhibits strong immune suppression efficacy and minor adverse effects, is available, its role and mechanism in MG have not been elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate th…

Infection Elicited Autoimmunity and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: An Explanatory Model.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) often also called chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a common, debilitating, disease of unknown origin. Although a subject of controversy and a considerable scientific literature, we think that a solid understanding of ME/CFS pathogenesis is emerging. In this study, we compiled recent findings and placed them in the context of the clinical picture and natural history of the disease. A pattern emerged, giving rise to an explanatory model. ME/CFS often starts after or during an infection. A logical explanation is that the infection initiates an autoreactive proce

A Sensitive Method for Detecting Peptide-specific CD4+ T Cell Responses in Peripheral Blood from Patients with Myasthenia Gravis.

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neurological disorder typified by skeletal muscle fatigue and most often production of autoantibodies against the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR). The present study was undertaken to assess the extent of AChR-peptide recognition in MG patients using co-culturing (DC:TC) of autologous monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) and highly enriched CD4+ T cells from the blood as compared to the traditional whole peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) cultures. We found that the DC:TC cultures were highly superior to the PBMC cultures for detection o…

[Dipyrone (metamizole) : Considerations on monitoring for early detection of agranulocytosis].

BACKGROUND: Dipyrone (metamizole) is a non-opioid analgesic commonly used in Germany, which can, in very rare cases, cause life-threatening agranulocytosis. The prescribing information calls for regular monitoring of the differential blood count in cases of long-term treatment. However, there is uncertainty about how this testing should be handled in practice. OBJECTIVES: Which recommendations can be derived from the published literature for evaluating blood cell counts during treatment with metamizole and which other options for monitoring exist? METHODS: Data from recent epidemiological st

Ocular myasthenia gravis in a person with tetraplegia presenting challenges in diagnosis and management.

We report the first case of ocular myasthenia gravis (OMG) in a patient with complete tetraplegia, highlighting diagnostic and management ch … h nerve palsies. Acetylcholine receptor antibodies were negative, but electromyography demonstrated muscle fatigue. The ocular signs responded well to pyridostigmine. Medications taken before diagnosis, including solifenacin for neurogenic bladder overactivity, were ceased to avoid attenuating the anti-cholinesterase effect. However, the unopposed anti-cholinest …

News on Clinical Details and Treatment in PGM1-CDG.

Phosphoglucomutase 1 deficiency has recently been reported as a novel disease that belongs to two different classes of metabolic disorders, congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDG) and glycogen storage diseases. This paper focuses on previously reported siblings with short stature, hypothyroidism, increased transaminases, and, in one of them, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). An intronic point mutation in the PGM1-gene (c.1145-222 G>T) leads to a complex alternative splicing pattern and to almost complete absence of PGM1 activity.Exercise-induced muscle fatigue, chest pain, and rhabdomyolysis pe…

Changes in the Pattern of Primary Hyperparathyroidism in Czech Republic.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is currently the most common endocrine disorder in Czech Republic after diabetes and thyroid diseases particularly in postmenopausal women. Over the past 40 years PHPT has changed from a rare severe disease of the bones and kidneys to common disease with hypertension, peptic ulcer, pancreatitis, easy fatigue and proximal muscle weakness. During 43 years we have examined one of the greatest groups of patients with PHPT. In the early 1970 the estimated incidence of PHPT in former Czechoslovakia was approximately 8 cases per 100 000 persons per year. Our data sh

A survey of cannabis (marijuana) use and self-reported benefit in men with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a chronic pelvic pain condition largely refractory to treatment. Cannabis (marijuana) use has been reported for a wide variety of chronic pain conditions, but no study has examined prevalence of cannabis use, symptom benefit or side effects, or frequency in CP/CPPS. METHODS: Participants were recruited from an outpatient CP/CPPS urology clinic (n = 98) and online through the Prostatitis Foundation website (n = 244). Participants completed questionnaires (demographics, CP/CPPS, depression, cannabis). RESULTS: The clin

Surgical treatment of advanced, stiff neurologic cavovarus foot in adults.

BACKGROUND: Cavovarus foot is a complex, three-dimensional deformity of neuromuscular origin. A rigid cavovarus deformity causes difficulty in walking, instability, fatigue fractures, calluses and trophic ulcers in the overloaded lateral part of the foot and requires wearing orthopaedic shoes. The aim of the study was to evaluate current surgical techniques in the treatment of rigid cavovarus foot in adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This paper is a retrospective analysis of 14 patients (15 feet) treated surgically at our centre who presented with advanced cavovarus foot caused by a spectrum of n

Mutations in the mitochondrial tRNA Ser(AGY) gene are associated with deafness, retinal degeneration, myopathy and epilepsy.

Although over 200 pathogenic mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations have been reported to date, determining the genetic aetiology of many cases of mitochondrial disease is still not straightforward. Here, we describe the investigations undertaken to uncover the underlying molecular defect(s) in two unrelated Caucasian patients with suspected mtDNA disease, who presented with similar symptoms of myopathy, deafness, neurodevelopmental delay, epilepsy, marked fatigue and, in one case, retinal degeneration. Histochemical and biochemical evidence of mitochondrial respiratory chain deficiency was obser

Surgical treatment of adult idiopathic scoliosis: long-term clinical radiographic outcomes.

More adults are suffering from adult idiopathic scoliosis and seeking treatment for their spinal deformities. Adult idiopathic scoliosis can lead to painful spinal osteoarthritis, progressive deformity, spinal stenosis with radiculopathy, muscle fatigue from coronal and sagittal plane imbalance, and psychological effects with a visible deformity. Primary treatment of such conditions is conservative; however, some patients are resistant to conservative treatment or are not candidates for it, and they require surgery. Back pain is likely the most common indication for surgical treatment of scoli…

Diagnosis of early myocarditis after respiratory or gastrointestinal tract viral infection: insights from cardiovascular magnetic resonance.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of myocarditis continues to be a challenging task in clinical practice. The purpose of our study was to investigate cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging in the diagnostic workup of ambulatory patients with the suspicion of early myocarditis after respiratory or gastrointestinal tract viral infection. The need for accurate diagnosis of early myocarditis arises from the low diagnostic accuracy of routine clinical tests. METHODS: We examined 67 consecutive patients with symptoms of weakness, palpitations, and fatigue after respiratory or gastrointestinal tract infe

Electrophysiological signs and the prevalence of adverse effects of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors in patients with myasthenia gravis.

The aim of this prospective study was to assess whether extra discharges (EDs), sometimes following the compound muscle action potential, could be used as a neurophysiological indicator of overdose of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) in patients with myasthenia gravis (MG). The characteristics and frequency of EDs were explored and the correlation of EDs with cholinergic side effects was also determined. Twenty-two MG patients (14 women, 8 men; 61 +/- 16 years of age) with daily AChEI treatment were examined. The mean disease duration was 10 years (range 2-62 years) and all patients ha
