Although squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is commonly found on sun-exposed skin, the occurrence of this malignancy in the nail bed is rare. Nail-patella syndrome is a rare hereditary (autosomal dominant) disorder, also called hereditary osteo-onychodysplasia and Fong's syndrome. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: A retrospective series of 40 patients who underwent simultaneous intramedullary nailings for bilateral femoral shaft fractures was analyzed. The authors present a simple distraction apparatus that makes it possible to perform nonreamed intramedullary nailing of the femur on a normal operating table. Nonreamed intramedullary (IM) nails were inserted in 24 femoral shaft fractures using this device. In a randomised prospective trial 98 elderly women with trochanteric fractures of the femur were treated with either a 135 degrees Jewett nail-plate or a 135 degrees Dynamic hip screw.
