OBJECTIVES: To evaluate outcomes for patients with esthesioneuroblastoma treated at a single institution during a 25-year period.
DESIGN: Eighteen patients with pathologic diagnosis of esthesioneuroblastoma between 1980 and 2004 were retrospectively identified.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of spontaneous cervical artery dissection (CAD) is largely unknown. An underlying connective tissue disorder has often been postulated.
OBJECTIVE: To further assess the association of CAD with ultrastructural abnormalities of the dermal connective tissue.
METHODS: In a multicenter study, skin biopsies of 65 patients with proven nontraumatic CAD and 10 control subjects were evaluated. The ultrastructural morphology of the dermal connective tissue components was assessed by transmission electron microscopy.

OBJECTIVE: To study the salvage surgery for nasopharyngeal carcinoma after irradiation failure.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty-one full-dose-irradiation-uncontrolled cases of nasopharyngeal carcinoma had undergone salvage surgery since 1965 till 1992, in which 41 had primary lesion and 80 neck lesion. All patients received radiation before surgery with the dose of 60Gy-145Gy. The patient selection for this report limited to those with recurrent tumors at the primary sites with no apparent bony involvement and no cranial nerve palsy, or cases with resectable neck recurrences.

Within a prospective case control study from 1993 to 1996, in 85 first operations for primary hyperparathyroidism the neck exploration was ended unilaterally when an adenoma (also histologically proven) and one normally small parathyroid gland were found. Otherwise or in case of simultaneous surgery of the thyroid gland, a bilateral exploration was performed. The primary success rate with this strategy, additionally based on 69.4% correct results of cervical ultrasound, was 95.3%, with a significant saving of an average of 30 min. operating time.

Because of unsatisfactory results in treatment of malignant conditions of the temporal bone, a technique for total en bloc resection of the temporal bone and carotid artery was reported by Graham et al. in 1984. The procedure involves resection of the internal carotid artery, cranial nerves VI through XII, and structures adjacent to the temporal bone. Nine patients out of a series of 20 are presented illustrating some of the conditions which may affect the sterno-clavicular region (SCR). The value of tomography as a routine procedure in the study of the SCR is stressed, as in many cases the plain film studies fail to reveal clear-cut evidence of pathological changes. Establishing the exact aetiological nature of the lesion is not always possible by means of radiology alone. However, the radiological demonstration of disease in the SCR is invaluable as a guide to the further management of the patient.
