Intelligent extraction of CT image landmarks for improving cam-type femoroacetabular impingement assessment.

OBJECTIVES: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) with cam-type morphology is a common hip disorder that can result in groin pain and eventually osteoarthritis. The pre-operative assessment is based on parameters obtained from x-ray or computed tomography (CT) scans, namely alpha angle (AA) and femoral head-neck offset (FHNO). The goal of our study was to develop a computer-aided detection (CAD) system to automatically select the hip region and measure diagnostic parameters from CT scans to overcome the limitations of the tedious and time-consuming process of subjectively selecting CT image slice

Classification Method of ECG Signals Based on RANet.

BACKGROUND: Electrocardiograms (ECG) are an important source of information on human heart health and are widely used to detect different types of arrhythmias. OBJECTIVE: With the advancement of deep learning, end-to-end ECG classification models based on neural networks have been developed. However, deeper network layers lead to gradient vanishing. Moreover, different channels and periods of an ECG signal hold varying significance for identifying different types of ECG abnormalities. METHODS: To solve these two problems, an ECG classification method based on a residual attention neural netw

Efficient Descriptor-Based Segmentation of Parotid Glands With Nonlocal Means.

OBJECTIVE: We introduce descriptor-based segmentation that extends existing patch-based methods by combining intensities, features, and location information. Since it is unclear which image features are best suited for patch selection, we perform a broad empirical study on a multitude of different features. METHODS: We extend nonlocal means segmentation by including image features and location information. We search larger windows with an efficient nearest neighbor search based on kd-trees. We compare a large number of image features. RESULTS: The best results were obtained for entropy image

Dynamically reconfigurable silicon array of spiking neurons with conductance-based synapses.

A mixed-signal very large scale integration (VLSI) chip for large scale emulation of spiking neural networks is presented. The chip contains 2400 silicon neurons with fully programmable and reconfigurable synaptic connectivity. Each neuron implements a discrete-time model of a single-compartment cell. The model allows for analog membrane dynamics and an arbitrary number of synaptic connections, each with tunable conductance and reversal potential. The array of silicon neurons functions as an address-event (AE) transceiver, with incoming and outgoing spikes communicated over an asynchronous eve

Computer-aided diagnostic scheme for the detection of lung nodules on chest radiographs: localized search method based on anatomical classification.

We developed an advanced computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) scheme for the detection of various types of lung nodules on chest radiographs intended for implementation in clinical situations. We used 924 digitized chest images (992 noncalcified nodules) which had a 500 x 500 matrix size with a 1024 gray scale. The images were divided randomly into two sets which were used for training and testing of the computerized scheme. In this scheme, the lung field was first segmented by use of a ribcage detection technique, and then a large search area (448 x 448 matrix size) within the chest image was auto

Noninvasive Intelligent Brain-Metasurface System for Real-Time Electromagnetic Wave Manipulation.

A noninvasive intelligent brain-computer interface (BCI) is integrated with a reconfigurable metasurface to establish a direct neural-to-electromagnetic transduction pathway for real-time, multimodal wave control. By combining convolutional-neural-network-based decoding of motor-imagery electroencephalography (EEG) signals with threshold-based recognition of electrooculography (EOG) commands, the proposed system converts neural and ocular activities into high-speed control commands, which are subsequently implemented through an FPGA-driven dual-polarized reconfigurable metasurface for real-tim

Reading specific memories from human neurons before and after sleep.

The ability to retrieve a single episode encountered just once is a hallmark of human intelligence and episodic memory[1]. Yet, decoding a specific memory from neuronal activity in the human brain remains a formidable challenge. Here, we develop a transformer neural network model[2, 3] trained on neuronal spikes from intracranial microelectrodes recorded during a single viewing of an audiovisual episode. Combining spikes throughout the brain via cross-channel attention[4], capable of discovering neural patterns spread across brain regions and timescales, individual participant models predict m

Temporal microstructure of cortical networks (TMCN) underlying task-related differences.

Neuro-electromagnetic recording techniques (EEG, MEG, iEEG) provide high temporal resolution data to study the dynamics of neurocognitive networks: large scale neural assemblies involved in task-specific information processing. How does a neurocognitive network reorganize spatiotemporally on the order of a few milliseconds to process specific aspects of the task? At what times do networks segregate for task processing, and at what time scales does integration of information occur via changes in functional connectivity? Here, we propose a data analysis framework-Temporal microstructure of corti

DSCrisk: A dual-view and substructure aware based method for drug-drug interaction risk-level prediction enhanced by contrastive learning.

Combination pharmacotherapy remains a fundamental strategy in contemporary clinical practice. However, the concurrent use of multiple drugs substantially increases the risk of harmful drug-drug interaction events (DDIEs). Developing reliable computational methods for DDIE detection is therefore essential, yet existing approaches still face notable limitations in modelling interaction-relevant chemistry, relational context, and interpretability. In this study, we propose DSCrisk, a deep‑learning framework that employs graph neural networks (GNNs) to encode a dual-view representation comprising

Disorganisation and depression: a re-examination of how we think and speak when depressed.

Disorganised thinking in severe mental illness seriously cripples social functions. Historically, the study of disorganisation has primarily concentrated on schizophrenia, utilizing tools designed to assess formal thought disorder (FTD). This review examines the characteristics, prevalence, and possible neural correlates of FTD within the framework of depressive disorders. Our focus is on disturbances in thought, language, and communication associated with depression, alongside the relevant subjective experiences. We also discuss the challenges and opportunities in using FTD as a predictor of

Recognizing Pediatric Tuberous Sclerosis Complex Based on Multi-Contrast MRI and Deep Weighted Fusion Network.

Multi-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is wildly applied to identify tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) children in a clinic. In this work, a deep convolutional neural network with multi-contrast MRI is proposed to diagnose pediatric TSC. Firstly, by combining T2W and FLAIR images, a new synthesis modality named FLAIR3 was created to enhance the contrast between TSC lesions and normal brain tissues. After that, a deep weighted fusion network (DWF-net) using a late fusion strategy is proposed to diagnose TSC children. In experiments, a total of 680 children were enrolled, including 331 h

The ascending arousal system shapes neural dynamics to mediate awareness of cognitive states.

Models of cognitive function typically focus on the cerebral cortex and hence overlook functional links to subcortical structures. This view does not consider the role of the highly-conserved ascending arousal system's role and the computational capacities it provides the brain. We test the hypothesis that the ascending arousal system modulates cortical neural gain to alter the low-dimensional energy landscape of cortical dynamics. Here we use spontaneous functional magnetic resonance imaging data to study phasic bursts in both locus coeruleus and basal forebrain, demonstrating precise time-lo

An EEG Source Reconstruction Method Accounting for Ascending Sympathovagal Activity: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Characterizing the causal relationship between central neural activity and peripheral physiological dynamics has become a key objective in computational neuroscience research. Despite advancements in models leveraging electroencephalography (EEG) for non-invasive brain-heart interplay estimation, the specific intracortical sources underlying this interaction remain poorly understood. This study introduces a novel methodological framework for investigating how peripheral neural control of heartbeat dynamics influences brain activity at the source reconstruction level. By integrating high-densit

Electroencephalography source-space functional connectivity reveals frequency-specific brain network dysfunctions in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by disruptions in large-scale brain networks. However, the role of high-frequency neural synchrony in these abnormalities remains unclear. Elucidating frequency-specific alterations may offer critical insights into the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying brain network dysfunction in OCD. METHODS: We analyzed resting-state electroencephalography data from 88 OCD patients and 100 healthy controls (HCs), and constructed source-space functional connectivity networks using weighted phase lag index. Graph-theoretical metrics incl

Understanding the heterogeneity of dynamic functional connectivity patterns in first-episode drug naïve depression using normative models.

BACKGROUND: The heterogeneity of the clinical symptoms and presumptive neural pathologies has stunted progress toward identifying reproducible biomarkers and limited therapeutic interventions' effectiveness for the first episode drug-naïve major depressive disorders (FEDN-MDD). This study combined the dynamic features of fMRI data and normative modeling to quantitative and individualized metrics for delineating the biological heterogeneity of FEDN-MDD. METHOD: Two hundred seventy-four adults with FEDN-MDD and 832 healthy controls from International Big-Data Center for Depression Research were
